This private organization can do as they please and these instructors signed and
promised to live a certain way - and they broke that promise. Shame on these
women for promising to do one thing and then doing another. They should be
fired if they are lying like that to their employer.
This article seems excessively biased in favor of the couple and how unfair the
school is. It skims by that they violated a contract and that a religious
school can fire them for violating that. There are many different
denominational schools that would have done the same thing, and that is their
right. A private institution, especially a religious one, has a right to decide
what kind of people are employed and held up as an example to the youth. In
today's world, with the celebration of diversity and the GLBT society, it
should not be hard for them to get another job.
from the article: "The archdiocese said that it would expect any Roman
Catholic school to follow the church’s teaching." Well, of
course! Why would anyone expect otherwise?
So Chris B. agrees with their policy of this private organization can do as they
please, well good for you. Now, can you accept about the policy of this private
organization of BYU Honor Code when those players (LDS and Non Members) who
signed the Honor Code agreement? Those players knew they can be booted out from
sports and possible from school.
The Church is perfectly entitled to enforce their employment contracts.
They're also perfectly justified in being called hypocrites. These
teachers were long known as gay. Only when they married, or declared an
intention to marry, were they fired. Catholic school enrollment and
church attendance continue to fall. Lay Catholics are apparently getting fed up
with Church hypocrisy and self-interest on several levels. If all the Church
wants is ideological hardliners, they're going to be closing buildings left
and right soon, because the majority of Catholics are not like that.
MMMMM That good old christian love and compassion. Yes indeed.
@Quaker:"These teachers were long known as gay. Only when they
married, or declared an intention to marry, were they fired."You
don't understand. The Catholic's view is that same sex attraction is
not a sin. Acting on the attraction is the sin.So if it was known
that they were gay it isn't a big deal with the Catholic church.
The school certainly has every right to fire the teachers - and the alumnae have
every right to decide not to donate in response.
@MaudineWe can agree on that point.Too bad the same
privilege is not extended by the left to bakers, photographers, and property
owners. They should have those same "every rights"
mcclark,Accepting and condoning sin never was and never will be
compassionate. When Christ told the woman taken in adultery that he did not
condemn her, her charged her to go her way and sin no more. Christ taught that
the sick, not the whole, needed the physician, but what was left unsaid but
heavily implied was the physician was to help the sick recover, not wave a magic
wand and make unhealthy behaviors suddenly be healthy. How is judging those who
do not agree with you to be unchristian showing christian love and compassion?
It's the requirement for the school to give benefits that is the problem.
Catholic schools were hiring anyone and everyone with no concern about their own
thoughts on such matters or activities. But then the gov said the schools have
to participate by paying for benefits. I think all catholic schools should close
and won't that be a pretty picture seeing tens of thousands of students in
major cities across the US show up on the steps of publics schools. They have
asked for it.
I'm waiting for the lawsuit where the lesbians claim that education is a
fundamental right, so the Catholic Church must allow them to teach because we
cannot let bigots (defined as anyone who doesn't think LGBT is the most
moral thing ever!) teach our children.....Because, after all, if it
doesn't promote the gay agenda, it's bigotry! That's what the
14th amendment says, right? Gays get to rule us all, or it's not equal
Good to see the outcry. Evidence that, despite the highly questionable moral
integrity of the institution, the people know injustice when they see it.
Hopefully with time this particular doctrine will come to be ignored just like
those regarding contraception and divorce.
"Reichert said she and Gambaro were asked to resign after the school said in
late July it received a copy of a mortgage application with the couple’s
names."--- Seems like the mortgage company or bank who provided
the copy of the application violated privacy laws. Seems like another lawsuit
in the wings."The couple had married in New York over the summer
and the school said they had violated the moral contract ..."So,
getting married is now "immoral"? Who knew?"the church
rejects gay marriage and considers homosexual acts a “grave
depravity” and “intrinsically disordered.”"---
Frankly, bigotry is more depraved and disordered imo.All of you
"conservatives" (2bits) who frequently mention the Mozilla CEO's
being fired should count the number of LGBT people listed as fired just in this
article and then get back to us.
RanchHand:Mozilla's CEO resigned for political activity six
years ago that the board which hired him knew about when it hired him. His
resignation was an attempt to satiate a lynch mob. He never signed an agreement
and then failed to keep that agreement. Quite bluntly, any person
who for any reason, even religious belief, has opposed SSM in their lives now is
suspect in this new world. In this world with rapidly changing views on what is
culturally or socially acceptable, social conservatives are going to be labeled
as bigoted and persecuted. That is discrimination. And we could easily see the
suppression of religious groups and religious viewpoints.
DEWCougars, Though you were addressing another, let me answer for myself as I
agree with him. I absolutely agree with. I went to BYU. I knew before I went
there what each and every part of the Honor Code said and required. I had a one
on one interview. It was not just a pamphlet that was sent to you a couple of
days before reaching campus. I didn't only hear it once, rather many times.
I understood that I alone was signing that Code. I knew I was not being forced
to go to there; I could go anywhere I chose. I also chose to keep my word. I
worked for years as a teacher in a public school system. They have contracts
too. I am assuming that they would not have taken kindly to me deciding which
parts of their contract I decided that I agreed with and would follow. I would
have been fired. I read that contract before I signed it as well. One can choose
where to work, but don't choose to work somewhere to teach a lesson or help
a cause. You sign a contract, follow it.
What is it about "CATOHLIC" High School....That they don't
A Quaker,Should every religion change their fundamental belief
system every time a group of members decide they don't like one of the
tenants? If you are whatever religion and decide you don't like whatever
underpinning makes that religion what it is,then maybe it is time for the person
to change. How would anyone keep their thumb on what a religion believes in if
every time a societal norm changes going against a doctrine? You could have new
standards almost every single day!! It's not terribly hard these days to
find a religion that will allow you to do anything you pretty much anything you
wish and pat you on your head and say how wonderful and 100% perfect you are. I
don't wish to belong to a religion that is ever changing with every new
wind that blows through. I don't want to have to run to the computer each
morning and google what do I believe today?
@Chris B. @Vanceone..Continued archaic backwards Utah neo-con posts accompanied
by adolescent ideology and a complete misunderstanding of the facts. How many
comments and posts have the rest of us which embrace equality for all rather a
select chosen few have we read regarding the Mozilla CEO? All you "freedom
fighters" should simply count the number of people alone in this article
that were fired (all illegally by the way based on the information obtained in
this article) and then get back to us. In closing, I could not imagine the
outcry if the situation was reversed!
