This is a wonderful bit of news. I have asked my Relief Society President to
let me teach the young mothers how to sew making tshirt dresses to send to those
countries with little girls that so desperately need them. But most of the
women in my ward just want to do Crafts, and I really get frustrated. I
appreciate this woman's dedication.
grandmagreat, It is no different for other charity activities. It would be nice
if many of those who have received welfare from government, church and community
would give back, but that is not the norm. Where we live now, the young women
had a quilt project with their mothers. Other women had to step in because so
many of the mothers did not have sewing machines or know how to use them. The
girls were not really interested. Even sewing with a needle and thread is a
lost art. The women I know just want to be entertained. I love sewing with a
needle and thread. When we lived in the East, quite a few women in our
neighborhood had quilting bees. The LDS women had no interest. Even years ago,
when we quilted at Homemaking meeting once a month, most of the women who wanted
their quilts done, did not help out. Also for wedding and baby gifts I rarely
give anything I have made. I just give money.
I live right down the road from this lady in a small town. Many people I know
quilt. A lot of them though as you said Sally don't want to do it unless
its fast. I still hand and machine quilt tops I make, I used to give them to
girls at work. Its in my will, that all my fabrics, machines, quilt frames
blocks that haven't been assembles will be given to Project Linus. I love
to make quilts.
I think it is amazing that at the age of 99 (soon to be 100), this wonderful
lady spends her day in the service of her fellow beings who are less fortuate.
What an exemplary way to spend your days serving others. She looks so vibrant
and alert which is due, I am sure, to the fact that she stays active in her
pursuits. She sure doesn't look 99. I have seen 80 year olds look older
than her. Congratulations Lillian you're amazing and an early HAPPY
BIRTHDAY for next year! You have made many girls very happy.
