I know they are trying to be "in", but, I really don't respect
these guys for hijacking a serious disease's fundraising efforts into
something for themselves. It's actually quite disgusting the more I think
Pragmatic: I find your demeaning comments about these members of a stake
presidency bit puzzling, since they are trying to show their support for the
cause that benefits from this fund raiser. HOWEVER, I do agree that the dignity
of the position of stake president should never be lowered in this, or any other
way. They should pay the hundred dollars for NOT getting doused and move on.
Incidentally, just how are they "highjacking" these fund raising efforts
These gentleman are demeaning their office as a Stake Presidency. It's
silly and out of place. They have tried too hard to "relate" and be
cute. And it doesn't work. They hijacked another organization's
efforts and overlayed them on to their own agenda. That's not cool in my
Lighten up people. Seriously, lighten up. You're really thinking too
The "real issue" is that there are too many people who get worked up by
small things. I think it's great that these men are doing this. It shows
that they are not robots like some stake Leaders.
"just how are they "highjacking" these fund raising efforts for
themselves?" They are highjacking it by taking the acronym ALS and tying it
to a catch phrase unrelated to the disease. To end that way says
"don't forget everything is about us not those other people with that
Mormons and boundaries.....
The whole ice bucket thing is so overdone and "played" at this point.
It's not about ALS or money for research anymore - its about a fad and
social media. If these men wanted to do this - do it as individuals
- not as a Stake Presidency. Not a fan.
all those who are haters, remember this: Joseph Smith was a man of the people.
If you know anything of his history, he played with children, he chopped wood
and he did that really intriguing stick pull wrestling game. This was all
conducted when he was an oracle of the Lord, communing with Jesus Christ Himself
on a consistent basis. If it was OK for Joseph Smith to engage in
"levity," then I'm certain that it's OK for a stake presidency
to do so. Christ Himself, for that matter, was not pedantic in His methodology
in any way, He allowed his disciples to eat corn on the holy day because they
were hungry, notwithstanding the criticism of the ignominious Pharisees and
Saducees. The Saducees were "sad you see" because they didn't honor
God or have fun. Nice job Hermosa Vista of Mesa, Ariz. Stake Presidency :)
Brad James, Joseph Smith accomplished much that enormously benefits mankind, but
he wasn't perfect. I'm thinking he wouldn't want us to set him up
as our standard or model--that position is reserved for Jesus Christ.
I watched my Mom die of ALS and I'm so grateful that this (silly) ice
bucket is bringing awareness to a disease that kills in about 2 years. No cure,
no treatment to prolong life, nothing. So thank you those stake presidents who
participated, for brining awareness to your congregation and to the young people
in your stake.
My husband was in a Stake Presidency years ago that would have done this! They
would have had the youth there to see it! Kudos to the Stake Presidency in
A member in my ward accidentally did the ASL Ice bucket Challenge. I asked her
if it meant she was doing it for American Sign Language, and she claimed she was
dyslexic. We all had a big laugh about it.
To anyone who says the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is "overdone" or
"played out," I would suggest you keep in mind the whole point is to
raise awareness and raise money for a good cause. This is probably one of the
best fundraisers for cancer research in history. As of yesterday over 88-million
dollars has been raised! It also displays one of the best aspects of our
tech-obsessed, social-networking-crazed society; the ability to bring people
together for a good cause, and in a fun way. I commend these men for their
participation. Everyone should participate, and donate!
For many who often criticize us LDS for being too stiff and starchy and for
always taking ourselves too seriously, I say lighten up people! If you have
a better way to draw attention to anything that is a worthy cause, then go for
it.But make up your mind over who can be fun and playful and who,
according to you can't have a little fun.
I don't like this. I'm not sure why. It just doesn't feel right
for a stake presidency to do this.
This is three guys in white shirts dumping water on their heads. That's it.Their titles done mean a thing. Sheeshhh.
I can't comment on the video, since it was taken down before I had a chance
to watch it, but I will comment on some of the comments: Hijacking?
As far as I know, the ALS Foundation doesn't own the letters A, L and S or
any combination of the 3; nor do they own the concept of dousing ones head with
a bucket full of ice water. Beneath the dignity of a stake
presidency? Joseph Smith (maybe not the role model but certainly a role model)
responded to such criticism with a well-documented parable about a prophet, a
hunter and a bow. I applaud the efforts of the Hermosa Vista Stake
Presidency. Goed gedaan, broederen!
