I'm still having a hard time getting over Jerry.
I don't belive in any agenda. But I do realize that like Jerry says Miss
America gets what she wants. Baveta fell victim to this in 98. And now Labron is
Miss America. It is hard to overcome mentaly for these guys, but the refs should
realize it is a problem and try not to favor these guys as much. sometimes it
Chris B, I am curious, did you like Jerry?
I never did feel like Jordan fouled Bryon Russell when he hit the winning shot
in Game 6. Heck, if they called fouls like that on Karl Malone, he wouldn't
have scored half the points he had in his career. But I always
remembered Bavetta stole 5 points from the Jazz in that game - more than enough
to win. If they had replay back then, the Jazz would have won and who knows who
would have won Game 7.I don't feel there was a conspiracy, but
the Jazz sure got jobbed. They did win both regular season games that year so
we'll have to be happy with that.
Of the three calls--the Eisley three was the toughest to swallow because the
ball was 25 feet in the air with 1 on the shot (not a "close" one). The
Jordan push? That just goes in the "refs don't want to change the
game" unwritten rule and we benefited on that rule when Malone screened
Barkley to get Stockton open for the famous "John Stockton sends the Utah
Jazz to the NBA Finals" shot in Houston.I think Dick is sorry the bad
officiating happened--still stinks to look back at that game....Game 7 would
have been epic!
Jerry Sloan is a class act! Nothing but respect for Coach Sloan. Personally,
I'm still a little bitter over those calls in the finals. I'll try
and take Coach Sloan's advice.
I'm sorry, those shots he missed are inexcusable. Pippen's back was
wasted. If the Bulls don't win game six, the Jazz win it all. As far as
the push off, I didn't expect the Jazz to get those calls but you have to
get shots at the buzzer correct, no excuse for that. It's good that's
Jerry is forgiving, I don't have to be so I won't...
Mufasta,Yep, love Sloan. I was a huge jazz fan for years and years
and years. After Sloan left in such a sad way with Williams being a major reason
I just haven't been able to get back on the bandwagon. I was on it strong
for over 20 years. Maybe some day I will come back
I, too, miss Jerry Sloan and "those" times. But, as he said, you gotta
move on and go about your business. I hope we've not seen the last of our
glory days and that this new batch of Jazz players and coaches will develop into
the team we were so proud of back then. I stay optimistic!Refereeing
is a hard job, I'm sure; and I trust they do their best for the most part.
But being human, they probably have their favorites (and not) and occasionally
look the other way on some potential calls. Anyway, best wishes to Dick B. on
his retirement. My husband and I are the same age as Dick and cherish every day
we are still up on two legs.
I was at that game. The call and non-call were missed badly. You did not need
instant reply to see how far off Bavetta was. Too bad they could not be reviewed
like is done today. That 5 point swing would have made Jordan's heroic
effort at the end of the game moot. Not to say we would have won game 7, but
Bavetta cost us the chance. I would not be as gracious as Sloan. It shows, that
as always, he had, and still has, class.
You are all assuming the Jazz would have won game 7. Would not have happened.
The best player of all time was on the other team. He wouldn't have let
the Jazz win a game 7 period. Malone was never a closer. Stockton closed out
better than Malone.
I wish Dick Bavetta all the best in retirement.
Bavetta should be rotting in a jail cell for the crimes he has committed. Of
course he is retiring now because with Stern gone he no longer needs to be the
go to guy to make sure Stern's favorite teams will win. Bavetta stole the
title from Utah and he stole the title from the Kings. Look up every
controversal game of the last 30 years and Bavetta was there. Believe me because
I have looked them up. I was in the arena in 1998 and the calls he made were not
mistakes. The game was fixed. I will never believe otherwise and I will always
despise Bavetta for stealing our chance to have a Championship.
