The 3 game stretch of Midd Tenn State, UNLV, and Savannah St will be brutal.Making it through that stretch without a loss sureley will clinch a spot in
I vote that UoU, who is currently nationally irrelevant, becomes locally
irrelevant as it dodges dangerous BYU and USU games to battle with rivals such
as Idaho State.
Pleblian,Do you mean the dangerous BYU Cougars who can't seem to ever
beat the U. Honestly, where are your comments coming from. Say something
"relevant" please.Go Utes!!
Re: pleblianJust wait until the P5 schools vote to only exclusively
play each other. Savannah State will become BYU's new rival then.
Pleb,Utah is dodging BYU and USU so they can play the #1 SOS in the
country which includes Michigan and Fresno who beat USU a few months ago. BYU's SOS will come in at about #80 Mr. PUtah has
already proved their ownership of BYU and USU over the past dozen years.
Utah will go 7-5 and go to a great bowl gamebyu and usu will
continue to be irrelevant as the P5 continue to gain more autonomy and move
towards our own division.Go Utes!
BYU 11-1USU 9-3Those are the only two that need to be
mentioned as they are the only two who will be bowling and nationally ranked
(relevant) at the end of the year (also interesting they aren't dodging
each other either...only one team does that in this state). Other teams will
shine their SOS trophy, sing carols, bake cookies, and look for another
offensive coordinator who will be the spittin image of Chip Kelly in August and
waiting in the unemployment line by December. But hey, at least he'll have
his good buddy KW to talk to...lines always go faster when you're with
Utah has the most to gain.byu has nothing to gain, therefore they
have nothing to lose.
Sour, sour grapes my friends. You wouldn't understand what its like in the
big boy leagues. Utes playing the only relevant game in town these days.
Such jealousy from the byu fanatics desperately trying to seem relevant in
futile fashion. I love it. A word of wisdom: don't throw stones if you live
in a glass house. After getting owned 4 years in a row, losing 9 out of 12,
including defeats such as 54-10 in Rice Eccles South, 48-24, and 52-21, and
slipping out of any shimmer of a spotlight with a pathetic and snooze-fest
schedule, don't hate on someone bigger and better than you. The more byu
fans try to pull Utah down, the farther byu sinks into irrelevant oblivion.
Chewbacca:"Sour, sour grapes my friends. You wouldn't understand
what its like in the big boy leagues. Utes playing the only relevant game in
town these days."How exactly does being out of the PAC12 race
midway through conference play and inviting the next executioner to town make
Utah's games relevant? 2-7 teams are only relevant in the sugar plum fairy
dreams of their fans.shizzy:Whatever helps you sleep at night.
Let's talk at the end of the season when BYU is nationally ranked and
you're trying to find grandma's old gingerbread recipe.
So tell me uncle Rico, who exactly is the U's rival? And do they know they
Uncle Rico better be wrong because Utah will only win 2 games a year then
@swizzle and U other utes bragging about SOS: one of the several hilarious
events that will unfold in the next few years (and what is really happening now)
is where U guys are forced to live in the past; something U guys accuse BYU fans
of doing. As the years flow like a river, and the utes are still at
the bottom of the PAC, begging the state of Utah for more money to pay the few
good players to sign on, U will all be still bragging about about what U
accomplished in 2004, 2008, and those times U were able to barely squeeze out a
victory in the game that really mattered the most to KW and company. Not much
was accomplished before, or after. And I'll be sitting back
reading as many as I can, and LOL.
It's hilarious reading the comments from the coug fans who try to spin the
fact that ending up in the top 25 polls simply by playing no one, actually
matters. Memo to coug fans, finishing in the top 25 means absolutely nothing if
you get there by playing nobody. You know you're irrelevant when you could
go undefeated and still end up out of the top 10 in the country. There's a
real possibility that BYU could experience that exact scenario with an
undefeated season this year. That said, they'll still lose at least 2 or 3
games and won't finish in the top 25 anyway. Count on it.
"You know you're irrelevant when you could go undefeated and still end
up out of the top 10 in the country."The last time BYU went
undefeated they were #1 in the country. That sounds relevant to me.
@ Riverton Cougar"The last time BYU went undefeated they were #1
in the country. That sounds relevant to me."Ha! That will never
happen again. It is a guarantee that if BYU somehow does run the table this
year, they will not be ranked in the top 10 final poll.On the other
hand, if Utah runs the table this year, it's a guarantee that we will be
ranked #1 in the final poll. That is obviously a long shot (Dumb and Dumber type
of long shot) but hey "So you're saying there's a chance!".
Football is in the air, I can smell it!!GO UTES!
Love the picture accompanying the article.
@Riverton Cougar:Because something that happened in 1984 is still relevant
in 2014... All this talk about national relevance is fun and I enjoy all the
trash-talking, but I'm not sure any team from Utah is going to be really
relevant in 2014. USU has the best shot, since they're in a conference and
if they're the highest-ranked G5 team they can get into a big-time bowl.
Not the playoff, though, because of the somewhat weak schedule. BYU has a much
weaker schedule and is independent, so they could have a 10-win season and
nobody outside of Utah will care, and Utah has a while to go before they're
level with everyone else in the PAC 12. My prediction: BYU and USU have 10+
wins, Utah goes 6-6 and finally gets a bowl game, USU ends up ranked higher than
BYU but just outside the top 15 (they were ranked #16 after 11 wins with a much
weaker schedule in 2012, so it could happen) and the media and the fans of BYU
and Utah continue in their condescending ways and treat USU like they're
still the doormat they were years and years ago.
BYU and Utah State will make the Utah proud.Utah will continue to be the
doormat of the PAC 12
As a fan I like to watch my team win more than lose. Winning helps get in bowl
games and in recruiting. I am fine with my team playing teams that are at the
same level. Any school can choose to have a tougher or easier
schedule, but in Ute's case they play teams that are way superior and that
results in loses. But you can always cheer on the other PAC teams if you ever
get bored of all those Ute losses.
KYUte:Is BYU going undefeated? No. If they did, would they be
national champions? No. Would they be in the top-10? Of course. It's
silly to suggest otherwise. Pollsters value undefeated teams, though they would
be careful to put them in the 5-7 range, rather than the top-4 that might
actually enter the playoff. Look at the 2007 Hawaii team--they played two FCS
teams, Idaho, La. Tech, SJSU, New Mexico State, and other mediocre teams. The
only ranked team they played was #19 Boise State. They finished the season
ranked in the top-10. BYU's schedule is certainly not killer, but
it's stronger than that.Besides, strength of schedule before
the season starts is about as useful as reading your horoscope. Texas could
have a resurgence and Stanford and/or Oregon could fall apart this year.
Motorbike"it's hilarious reading the comments from the coug fans
who try to spin the fact that ending up in the top 25 polls simply by playing no
one, actually matters. Memo to coug fans, finishing in the top 25 means
absolutely nothing if you get there by playing nobody."Come on
dude, be fair. In both 2004 and 2008 beating MWC competition to be ranked
in the top 25 seemed to matter a whole lot to Utah fans. Boise
State, UCF, Hawaii, TCU, and Utah all benefited greatly from top 25 season that
were possibly accomplished only due to poor competition. Just so
you know, BYU's 2014 preseason SOS ranking is right on par with both
Alabama and Oklahoma (SOS ranked #95 and #93) Both are ranked in the pre-season
top 10... Both will likely have a spot in this years playoff...The
fact is SOS means very little to those who actually have a vote.
ChewbaccaWhat's "relevant" about being a perennial
bottom dweller in any conference?Being a convenient punching bag for
the big boys of a conference doesn't make you one of them.
2013 Utah had fewer wins, but much tougher competition.2013:Best Win: Utah beating Stanford. (BYU & USU have NEVER beaten a team that
won a P5 conference outright in a season)Worst Loss: BYU losing to
Virginia (Virginia was 0-8 in ACC, was 1-10 against non-byu teams (beat VMI).Head to Head:Utah beat BYUUtah beat USUHead to
head:Utah has beaten BYU 9 of last 12 gamesUtah has beaten USU 13 of
the last 14 gamesLast time BYU beat Utah by more than a TD: 1996Last time USU beat Utah by more than a TD: 1979BYU & USU may
have a better record, but they play nobodies. Mary Hardin-Baylor was 13-1
last year in division 3. They are so much better than USU or BYU.
Have you ever noticed that the only folks who spend time praising strength of
schedule represent teams at the bottom of their conference? Does the SOS of
Harvard make any difference to them in terms of what constitutes a successful
season? Utah is at a distinct disadvantage, not because of SOS but because of
location, population base, climate, coaching, and tradition of winning (none as
opposed to say USC )
We are real good. We will go onwards and sidewards to more pac glory.Go Utes!
It's hilarious to me when Utah fans talk about BYU or USU playing in a
sub-par bowl, like that's all they have to play for, and every team in the
PAC12 plays in a major bowl. Newsflash...you have to win the PAC12 to play in
the Rose Bowl, and that may very well never happen for Utah. Win some games and
you might get to go to another one of the PAC12's major bowl affiliation
games, like: The Hyundai Sun Bowl (PAC #4), The National University Holiday
Bowl (PAC #3), The Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl (PAC #5), The Valero Alamo Bowl
(PAC #2), the New Mexico Bowl (PAC #7), the Craft Fight Hunger Bowl
(PAC#6)...granted these were all last year's bowls, but explain to me how
BYU having an automatic bid to the "Beach Blanket Bowl in Miami" is
worse than maybe winning 6 games and possibly getting invited to the New Mexico
Bowl is for Utah?...win all your games in the PAC12 and then you can start
claiming that you're playing for something.
@Black and Blue"Come on dude, be fair. In both 2004 and
2008 beating MWC competition to be ranked in the top 25 seemed to matter a whole
lot to Utah fans."Being fair, you're very far off on this
one. What mattered a lot to us was bringing home multiple BCS trophies,
something BYU has never been able to accomplish, t-shirts notwithstanding. Motorbike is correct that the BYU fans are the one's pounding their
chest about top 25 and 10-win seasons against nobodies. There are no trophies
for those "accomplishments."
Some of this fan smack is ridiculous. There are many valid points to be found
across the board, though.-USU is primed for success because of a
weaker schedule and overall improved institution and fan support. Winning 10
games this season is realistic.-BYU is primed for success for the
same reasons and the fact they have just been so consistent for so long. Winning
10 games is realistic for the Cougars.-Utah has the toughest road
back to relevance with a brutal schedule. Won't be impossible for them to
get back, but it will be hard. Six wins is likely what Utah will get this year.
All three schools are in different situations and have different
histories. I just don't see the need for so many to get so worked up.
"Being fair, you're very far off on this one. What mattered a lot to us
was bringing home multiple BCS trophies, something BYU has never been able to
accomplish, t-shirts notwithstanding."Don't talk smack
about BYU's national championship trophy if you can't take smack about
BCS bowl win trophies. I think most people would agree that NC > BCS bowl
win."Motorbike is correct that the BYU fans are the one's
pounding their chest about top 25 and 10-win seasons against nobodies. There are
no trophies for those "accomplishments."In all honesty, it
seems that the pollsters care more about wins than strength of schedule. It
seems that 10+ win seasons against nobodies get more respect than 5-7 or 6-6
seasons against tough teams. In addition, it's funny that Ute
fans will brag about the good teams they beat in their 2004 and 2008 overall
weak schedules but don't acknowledge BYU's good teams on their overall
"As a fan I like to watch my team win more than lose. I am fine with my team
playing teams that are at the same level." The honesty is
appreciated. Just an honest assessment of the BYU fan mentality, and a
fundamental difference between the two programs right now.
Sambone's got it right...all of the smack, endlessly going on, is done for
the amusement of the smackers and accomplishes nothing. Do any of you really
expect byufan to say, "Oh darn, you are right, thanks for straightening me
out"? or utefan to proclaim "Scrud man you coug dudes have enlightened
me, Utah really is the doormat of the pac"? What is nice that USU is more or
less out of this and Aggiefan can actually think constructively about the
