American capital is investing in China, not in the United States. For this
reason many U.S. students reason: what good is an education if there's no
job waiting at the end of the arduous education process? Care to answer, John?
Does this apply to corporations? Because, they are people after all. But I see
corporations using inversion tactics to avoid paying Uncle Sam. So they get all
the subsidies and benefits of "living here" but don't pay for them.

What is it that you don't like about all these wonderful programs and
unifying voices? Perhaps all those unifying and defining moments of greatness
the last forty or fifty years may not be enough. Yes, Common Core, must be the
last unifying piece to bring us all together! I am a little confused, however.
I had been thinking, unclearly I'm sure, that fathers in the home, children
brought together in prayer as a means to heal my family and this nation , and
looking to God for answers might do it better. I am going to have to rethink
this, but thanks for the reminder (I think).
I believe John makes a lot of good points in this article. We are, as a
society, becoming too complacent in accepting mediocrity in our lives. And
changing that all starts with raising the education bar. There is a strong
correlation between the level of our standard of living and the world standing
of our level of education excellence. We're truly becoming too complacent
in what we're willing to settle for. The resultant long term effects are
not and will not be good,... nor acceptable to many of us.
One of the greatest blessings I have from moving from Utah is the idea that
somehow there is one right way, that people must behave in a singular fashion,
that some how we are this nicely defined society where everything must be the
same, that idea was permanently and irrecoverably shattered. One of my favorite
things I get to do is when I travel the world is to visit local wards and
branches. And yes, the church, or perhaps better said the gospel is the same
from place to place, thankfully the people are not. The gospel is
a perfect example how diversity and doing the right thing can go hand in hand.
We can have a set of common values, and yet have many different ways of
realizing those values in our own lives. There are those who choose to exploit
those differences mostly in an effort to gain wealth or power. Very seldom do
their efforts ever result in anything "praise worth or of good report".
I would hope those we elect can see beyond party first rhetoric and
represent for those things that advance all Americans. Anyway.... this just my
opinion... for what it is worth.

Problem identified...now what? We need to retool education for the 21st century.
Goodbye to summer breaks, goodbye to social promotion, goodbye to a unionized,
indifferent labor-force. We need to set performance standards and make kids
attain them. We need to teach real skills needed to get a good job. We need to
hold teachers and administrators responsible for performance within their scope
of authority and de-centralize curricula to meet local conditions. We need to
make education effective and efficient and serve kids, not be used as a
permanent jobs for people who can't do anything else and warehouse kids
until they're 18yo only to release them into the wild without any value or

Americans have never really felt the desperation of not knowing where their next
meal will come from.Lets be real honest - we have it very good - and
for us to whine that it isn't still getting better just shows how spoiled,
or ungrateful we as a people have become.Travel the world. Visit
places that make you uncomfortable.... because that is how a good portion of the
world lives. The recent generations seem to have no idea just how good they
still have it.
I like some of the solutions that James E proposed. Make school year round, end
social promotion, end teacher tenure and base their continued employment on
evaluations. We are also going to have to admit that all kids will not go to
college, and that vocational training is necessary. This means we must have a
tiered educational system: college track, vocational track and life skills
track (for the challenged kids). We will also need to make sure
that education is based on science, not belief. We will have to fully fund a
living wage for school employees, and we might need to end the bottomless pit of
interscholastic sports. (After all is this not about education?)So
