For Alta to only have 62 kids come out is amazing.

I just did a quick look on the Utah State Office of Education site (just to get an idea of the dynamics going on with Alta) and in 2012 (the year before Corner Canyon opened) Alta had an enrollment of 2414 (grades 10-12). Last year the enrollment was 1823 (grades 9-12). If you count only grades 10-12, which is what I think UHSAA uses to determine classification, Alta had 1396 students. This years numbers are not yet available.

Could Alta be relegated to 4A next year with the re-alignment that is slated to take place? That likely kills the Black and Blue game with Bingham as Bingham has not "played down" in a quarter century.

Alta only has 62 varsity players, but from what I've heard they have a great group of sophomores and the younger groups coming through will be very good.
New OC and DC as well for the Hawks, I'm interested to see how the offense looks now that Harrison is calling the plays. I think the Hawks will surprise some teams but they have a brutal schedule.
I've heard Alta will move down to 4A, but I sure hope they stay 5A because I think they'll stay competitive regardless of the lower numbers and I love the Black and Blue rivalry.

I doubt that Alta would move down a classification as success is taken into account into the football classifications now. I also doubt that Bingham would stop playing Alta even though they are in 4A. To me the "playing down" idea is a farce. The best 4A teams are comparable with the best 5A teams and it shouldn't make a difference.

Yes, but Alta has not had the success that would keep them 5A. 5-6 last year and 2-4 in the playoffs the last 4 years. Yes they were good in that 2005-2009 time frame but probably not good enough over the last 4 for that to be taken into account, if UHSAA does adopt that stupid plan.

As far as Bingham "playing down", they have not since 1988. They were 4A then and lost to 3A Provo. Since then, they have not played an in-state game against a team from a lower classification. Maybe they change that to play Alta, but I doubt it. They haven't done it to play anyone else in 25 years. Just stating the facts.

I agree that the best 4A teams are comparable with the best 5A teams and it shouldn't make a difference. But it apparently has to Bingham for a quarter century.
