In our opinion: Trademarking the 'I believe …' cheer reveals the slippery slope of protecting words and phrases

    Go Aztecs!
    You must go to an Aztecs basketball game and watched "The Show" to understand how the students have made the words "I Believe We Can Win" their own.
    They were the first to trademark the slogan. They don't own the words, they own the right to make commercial products using those words. They don't say they were the creators of the cheer, they say they were the first to file a trademark application.
    As a San Diegan and Aztec fan, I Believe We Can Win.
