Here is my comment. Some societies have it more wrong than others. These guys
have it very wrong. I hope the cops/federales don't give them an inch. I
don't look forward to this summer in Heber now. I see them avoiding the
mountain snow already by settling in at Walmart today. My brother
lived in Paonia CO after the 92 Rainbow event and residents had had a terrible
experience. A temporary tax for more cops is the only way to handle it as other
places have done with them in the past. Then go drag their broken down
abandoned vehicles away once they've left. Watch the news.
I am betting Heber is thrilled to have the invasion of hippies especially with
so many LDS girls camps going on in the same areas. Nothing like
"exposing" a 12 year old girl to hippie life...literally. Yikes!! Forest
Service officials better post some signs....no nudity, no drugs, no other forms
of hippie debauchery....and ENFORCE IT!!!
Wow - looks like the "Occupy Wallstreet" crowd has made its way to Utah
now ...ready to occupy the forest for a week or so. Hopefully they will leave
the forest cleaner than they left the city parks. YUK!!! Peace + Love + Dope!!!
This brings back memories of my childhood. I grew up in the deep south in
Mississippi and Louisiana. Everyone was Southern Baptist except for the
Pentecostals, and many of them went back and forth. Now and then a group would
come through from a church "out west", at least that's where my mom
told me they were from. Preachers would be handing out copies of The Godmakers
and warning us for weeks in advance to stay away from these people. They were
violent, had a bunch of wives, some of them had horns, and they were known to do
things to little children. But when I disobeyed the adults and I actually
met the Mormons they weren't really that bad. They didn't even have
horns. Later in life I even moved out west where those people were from and
married one of them.
This gathering happens all over with no problem. Why is it such an issue in
patriot & brave sir.... you need to do a little reading about rainbow
gatherings.... even a glance at previous events and you wold know that the
rainbow people spend a great deal of effort to leave the gathering site BETTER
than when it began.... ignorance is NOT bliss !
A national forest is for the citizens of the nation, not just Jesus loving
locals. Every gathering cleans up after the event and the "extra" costs
associated are off set by the taxes charged for the increased commerce in the
community, such as gas, foods, some gear. Don't worry, the forest will
survive better than if it were just logged over, or suffered a forest fire. I
believe what really galls the local community is that some folks don't
value money as they do, and can use their time on earth to enjoy something that
can't be bought. Jealous that these Americans are more free than the
locals. Free to love who and when they choose. Free to wear funny cloths or no
cloths at all, just as God made them. Free from shame and guilt about modesty.
Free from egos that regulate, dominate, and educate. These are Gods kids! His
Family, under his rainbow.
Why are they allowed to come in and control this area for such a long period of
time? Isn't some kind of permit required? If it costs half a million
dollars to have them camp there, why not charge them some kind of fee to offset
@bullet56That was funny. You are right, national forest are for
everyone. Who are you talking about when you reference Jesus loving locals?
What is a Jesus loving local anyway? Please tell me how taxes off sets the
"extra" cost? Please explain how a government and or state tax offsets
any cost associated with this? When there is additional cost for things on
government lands, taxes gets increased to offset cost. It is not applied only
to those who caused the extra cost. The people who are there have to pay for it
twice, taxes and burden. And no, it has nothing to do with dealing
with someone who doesn't value money, and uses the earth for enjoyment.
Nobody cares if they feel more free than locals. Nobody cares what kind of
clothes they wear. If they are naked, well then that becomes a legal issue and
yes I think most would have a problem with that. To use "shame, guilt, and
modesty" in the same sentence, I am not sure I get that. And what is wrong
with education? But I give it to you. You made me laugh, thanks!
...monsieur le prof meet( read !) bullet56 !
Patriot, you have no room to talk.I seem to remember a certain lds
boys scout group in goblin valley doing damage to a million year old rock
formation. The damage they did was 100 times greater than the damage done by the
rainbow family. By the way, did the big guy lose his disability
check? He clearly wasn't disabled. He should have to work for his money.
DesNews, Denied, How? Direct quotes of others approved.@wwookie -
Why is a "Silly Mormon Group", why not a Baptist, Presbyterian, or other
faith group. Or is your comment just an attack on the Mormon faith, by calling
them silly. Other faiths are here in Utah as well who do missionary work as
well. Just curious.@dmcvey - The thing is, they do not always go off
without a problem. That's why it is a problem here, or anywhere. It's
not that the whole Rainbow crew is bad. They have a few bad apples who make them
look very bad. I've come to learn the same warnings take place every where
they go.@bearfoot - You're right, a little reading about
rainbow gatherings, previous events would be helpful. You will find that in some
instances they have done well with cleanup. In MORE instances you will find they
left the place a mess, Ignorance is NOT bliss!@Mister J - Another
attack on some of the LDS faithful and BYU. What does it have to do with the
Rainbow Group again? This has nothing to do with Mormons. This is the
Sheriffs and the Forest Service that is doing this.
I feel bad for the people in the Heber City area!Groups such as the
Rainbow Family present one image, but portray a totally different one!Good Luck Heber valley.
If the picture is any indication, there will be piles and piles of garbage left
behind. And that is just one "vehicle."
Using the logic of many here, let's outlaw all Boy Scouts groups in goblin
valley for the acts of a few irresponsible adults, right?
@bullet56"Don't worry, the forest will survive better than
if it were just logged over, or suffered a forest fire."I love
love love strawman arguments like these. The worst kind of strawman argument is
the one where someone implies that "if (a) doesn't happen, then (b)
will certainly happen" while ignoring other, far more likely, possibilities.
Guess what? There are more things that can happen to a forest than either
being trampled by free spirits or being logged. Therefore your implication that
if the Rainbows don't come then the forest will certainly be logged or
burnt down is disingenuous. More than likely the forest will just continue to
exist, an outcome your strawman argument discounted.Personally, I
would prefer it continue to exist without piles of human feces laying around,
without polluted streams and aquifiers, and without used needles strewn about.
@dmcvey"This gathering happens all over with no problem. Why is
it such an issue in Utah?"5 minutes on Google will make you wish
you could remove this post.
@ dmcvey and bearfoot and bullet56:If every gathering cleans up
after itself, it's not nearly enough to offset the absolute mess the locals
encounter after every gathering... no matter where they go.My cousin
works for the Forest Service in that area. So I'm speaking on good
authority. In spite of your contentions, the last time this group was in
Utah 11 years ago, it took several weeks for the Forest Service to get the area
even close to as clean as it was beforehand. There are many
Rainbowers who camp far enough away from the main group that they don't
bother using the portable toilets and leave a lot of unburied human sewage. Very
disgusting. Even though the local population temporarily doubles,
the crime-rate during that period usually quadruples. And the extra
taxes collected during their stay doesn't come even close to off-setting
the extra half million dollars in law-enforcement and Forest Service costs. It's difficult to find locals who will admit to enjoying having
them come. In fact, there are almost no positives involved. As such, your
defense of this group is downright laughable and mired in ignorance.
@The Real Maverick"Using the logic of many here, let's
outlaw all Boy Scouts groups in goblin valley for the acts of a few
irresponsible adults, right?"Apples to oranges comparison. The
Rainbow Family coming here is the SAME group that has destroyed other wilderness
areas. Boy Scout groups in Goblin Valley are not the same ones that knocked
over the rock formation. I would have no problem with banning the group that
did the damage from being allowed back into Goblin Valley, but that's not
what you're advocating. Also, Boy Scouts tend to have the proper
permits, ensuring that the area's infrastructure can handle their (quite
small) numbers. You won't get the same thing from the Rainbow Family. Now, are there any other silly arguments I can blow out of the water?
Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye
shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you

What a bunch of hypocrites. Any self-respecting, earth-loving, tree-hugging,
hippy with an ounce of honesty would never drive an internal-combustion engine
vehicle hundreds of miles to participate in such a trivial, self-indulgent
activity (especially older vans and buses built on 1970s emission's
technology). Do they really believe in anthropogenic global warming or not? Are
they not concerned about thousands of people trampling all over the forests
crypto-biotic crust? Do they not care about destroying thousands of native
plants and grasses? Are they totally callous to the destruction to the natural
migration and mating patterns of native fauna that the presence of thousands of
dope-smoking, drum-beating, outdoor-defecating, hippies will have? These people
lecture us about how we are destroying the environment, but seem to be some of
the worst offenders. Obviously a case of do as I say, not as I do.
Just remember, Soviet Russia was the ideal that these hippies preach. And
Soviet Russia left rings of oil on the harbors, and completely trashed their
environment. Just as with Occupy Wall Street, leftist groups as a
rule tend to be ignorant, disrespectful, trashy, destructive, selfish groups.
Not all of them, but many are. I do hope we don't have people
crapping on cop cars like Occupy did.
@ Real Maverick:Your comparison of the Boy Scouts to this group
demonstrates a high degree of ignorance regarding the situation. The
level of responsibility between the two groups are almost beyond comparison. The
Rainbows advocate and allow drugs and lewdness, while the Boy Scouts stand for
and advocate the best traits of civilization. To contend that there
are "a few irresponsible adults" in the Rainbow group is in the running
for the understatement of the year. There is a reason local authorities need to
spend an extra half million dollars to deal with them. I've never heard of
a single extra dollar needing to be spent by those same groups in dealing with
Boy Scout camps. Are Boy Scout groups perfect? No... not at all. But
considering there are tens of thousands of BSA camps every year, the percentage
of issues involving them is almost negligible. When it comes to the
Rainbow group, there is a very good reason why they move to different camp areas
every year, far from their previous one. Otherwise, the authorities and the
locals wouldn't put up with them, their defiant behavior and their

If folks are looking for more information on the Rainbow Gathering, this is a
Rainbow Family Blog with information about this year's Gathering in
Utah: Well, actually it won't let me post the web address but you
can google "nevada utah gathering 2014" and you will see it.
No point in being haters. Each one of you will only get out of it what you can
from where your mind is at. It's the same with being a participant. You
bring your self with you. Always. But spending a bunch of time complaining does
nothing. It's happening. Go up and visit. Take an open mind with you.
Rainbow is a great way to grow up if you are a kid and a great way to get that
kid feeling back if you are a grownup. VERY good for all. Spend the time to
actually hike into the site. If you never left the parking lot, well,
that's where the trash all gets hauled to for sorting and recycling. If you
dont leave the parking area you will have NO idea what a gathering is.
Americans gather. Americans are formed and influenced by where they gather. In
every city in America, Americans overdose, assault, rape, murder, steal and
virtually every American requires medical attention at some time. Americans come
to the Annual National Rainbow Gathering. They bring who they have been shaped
into and influenced by where they come from. Every kind of American is
represented. Americans are taught that this is a free country and
all can travel freely. The Constitution says that we may assemble freely. So we
freely travel once a year and assemble as individuals; there is no organization,
membership or leaders. There are no fees and no charges. Anyone with a
bellybutton is welcome. There are problems. Americas alienated
unwanted youth are not hippie flower children of 40 years ago. They are angry,
distrusting and violent. And for a time we do what we can. But it's hard to
heal such hardened kids in a week. It makes us fearful of how America can
produce such damaged kids. If you want to know. See me in the forest &
