Vote Republican then....We all know what a "bang-up" job
George Bush and Cheney did, right?
Some questions for Mr. Merrill: - On what evidence do you base your
comment that Bowe Bergdahl is a "Barney Fife"? Have you interviewed
him? Do you know all the facts of the case or are you basing your opinions on
the comments made by Congressman and Senators who previously backed a prisoner
trade but now find it reprehensible, just in time to create a crisis before the
mid-term elections?- How long should we hold prisoners of war at the
prison in Guantanamo without prosecution? Article 118 of the Geneva
Convention, which covers the treatment of military personnel, says that
"prisoners of war shall be released and repatriated without delay after the
cessation of active hostilities" which will come to an end in 2016. Taliban
detainees, for whom we traded, would seem to have an argument for being
repatriated following the end of hostilities in Afghanistan."Afghanistan is a party to the Geneva Conventions, and the Taliban
represented the nation’s de facto government," said Richard D.
Rosen, a retired Army colonel who now directs the Center for Military Law and
Policy at Texas Tech University. Get something for these prisoners
or just release them. Which is better?
Pokémon?!Seriously?!I'm forever grateful you or your
6 year old is not President of the United States!
Re:Talbot MerrillI am wondering if it were your Pokemon playing son
who was being held captive, would you still consider the deal as
"embarrassing"? On the other hand you are right we could have used our
military might and just take what was ours, but it was deemed more important to
bring him out of captivity in a helicopter as opposed to a body bag! Remember in
another time or another place this could have been your son or my son!
Would you like to be the one "left behind"?We sent these men
and women over there. Whatever his reason for walking away, he is one of ours
and we should bring him home.
Talbot, put down the pokemon cards, turn down the talk radio, hop off the
web.... and do a little more deeper research on what is really going on in that
part of the work. This is the same place where Osama Bin Laden was able to hide
in near open view for over 10 years. This is part of the world where there are
large swaths of territory that their own governments have little to no control
over. This is part of the world where the Soviet Army had to retreat from in
defeat. This is part of the world that when we find people of
interest, it has become to dangerous to send our own troops in to get at these
assets, but we adapted and now use drones to strike at these people. So if you
think trading 5 Taliban was a sign of US military weakness, you have a lot more
studying to do. When you trust a bunch of media talking heads
versus people who have actually commanded military operations in the darkest
part of the world, you need to reconsider your sources of information.
Israel has been making trades like this for decades. I often thought with those
trades, the value of one Israeli soldier is worth a thousand Palestinians? This
sends a remarkable lesson, one which opponents of this trade should think
about. This is on top of a lot of other reasons and issues. Rather than
continuing this Fox driven Salem Witch Trial (yet again), maybe folks should
settle down and be more pragmatic, rational and empathetic. But, that's
asking too much of the right wing that prefers the emotional satisfaction of
attacking at every possible opportunity, no matter how ludicrous.
The following was from a 2011 CNN article:The Israeli government
will "trade more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners for one captured Israeli
soldier."Maybe your son should school the Israeli's on how
to get a good deal!A month ago conservatives, and veterans were
savagely attacking President Obama for leaving American military members
behind. Now that he has freed the last remaining POW they are criticizing every
aspect of his efforts to get Bergdahl back. There is no sense of
proportionality to the conservative's attacks. Bush gets a free pass on
starting two catastrophic wars and Obama gets pilloried for bring back the last
If the other guys have had your guy for five years, wouldn't that indicate
that they also have the power to kill him - no matter WHO has the military edge
in the conflict? I'm not sure the writer has thought this through. Maybe
Pokemon cards don't reveal the whole picture.
Lesson Learned....Conservatives will gladly send someone else's
kids over seas to fight their wars, Conservatives will also leave them
there if the next President is a Democrat.
If President Obama had not brought Bowe Bergdahl home, the right would be
screaming for his impeachment for leaving our POW behind. Now they want to
impeach him because he brought him back. Our country has always done prisoner
exchanges, George Washington did them with the British. We've done them in
virtually every war. It is how we got John McCain out of Vietnam.
This letter is another perfect example of the devolution of the Republican
party. This is one thing that should never have been politicized.
Something everyone should have agreed is a good thing the President did. As has been pointed out endlessly, there are many precedents for this
action every where in the world. Still rather than using those precedents to
support the return of an American, the right chooses to completely ignore them
and make comparisons like Pokémon card trading.Absolutely shameful.
Mr. Merrill,Since you have such vast knowledge of the inner workings
of prisoner exchanges - so much so that this could have been done
"easily," I suggest you hop on a plane immediately and start handing out
resumes to everyone in DC that you see. I'm sure the government could use
At first I got excited thinking that this way another Frank Overfelt letter.
Then I saw that it wasn't. Anyone else wonder what this guy's
credentials are? Why isn't he working for DC already? What insider
information does he have since he appears to have all the answers? And who plays
Pokemon anymore? That's so early 2000s.Anyone else find irony
in him living in Lebanon, Missouri?
Pokemon cards?Gee -- and Oliver North had to resort to exhanging
1,500 missiles to terrorists.Sign this guy up for book deals, Conservative Pep-Rallies, and give him his own TV show on FoxNews!
@airnaut,The other lesson learned is... that Democrats will protest
and fight against war UNLESS a Democrat is President.Where has Sandy
Sheehan been lately? Camping out in front of Obama's ranch?Where have ALL the anti-war protesters been lately? Quietly crawled back
under their rock once Obama was elected. Because that's what it was all
about. Getting a Democrat elected.
Completely partisan letter. Apparently this Talbot values partisan attacks over
the well-being of an American soldier.I'm guessing that had
Romney won and don't the exact same thing this letter writer would be
singing a completely different tune.Such a silly petty letter. You
should feel ashamed.
Sgt. Berdahl is an American. If he broke laws, they were our laws. If he broke
faith, it was with us. We do not leave people to rot in foreign prisons. He is
home; now we can decide if we need to prosecute him.People who claim
he is worthless because he is not perfect (either accidentally or intentionally)
embarrass me no end.And five Taliban generals is nothing compared to
Iran/Contra. If you are going to condemn a President, remember Ronald Reagan.
To this day, that is the most disgusting, and long-term damaging, thing ever
done by a President of the United States
"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool
than to open it and remove all doubt."- Mark TwainMark Twain couldn't have described this letter any better.
The BO apologists are out in force today. Where is GaryO?ECR,His apparent desertion – at least walking away from his unit - indicates
Barney FifeismLD_ lib,His 6 year old would do a better job
than BO is doing.airnaut/open mindedyou mean JFK and LBJ were
conservatives when they sent our sons to Vietnam to die? We weren’t even
attacked by the Vietnamese. You seem to forget we were attacked by those in
Afghanistan. I guess that means nothing to you.No, you comment says
you will ignore any justification for defending this nation to defend your
blatant attacks on conservatives. You should be GLAD they were sent there,
otherwise your defense industry job would be gone.
Re: 2 bitsI was't aware the Obama had a ranch, this is the
first I have heard it mentioned. Could you let us know where that ranch is, as
I would be interested in visiting it!"Where have ALL the
anti-war protesters been lately? Quietly crawled back under their rock once
Obama was elected." If that is what Got Obama elected twice,
what does it say about the Republican candidates he ran against? But then again
you only have a couple more years to wail and weep, then All the Anti-war
protesters will crawl out from under their rock and do it again because nothing
has changed, the Repubs. can only spout the faux rhetoric, and have done little
to change the demographic of the last two elections. Say Hi. to Hillary!
Like arguing with idiots...I learned long ago, never to wrestle with
a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it.George Bernard Shaw
@ lost in DC"you mean JFK and LBJ were conservatives when they
sent our sons to Vietnam to die? We weren’t even attacked by the
Vietnamese. You seem to forget we were attacked by those in Afghanistan. I guess
that means nothing to you."You seem to have never even known who
attacked us on 9/11.It wasn't Afghanistan nor was it the
Taliban, but Al-Qaeda, a terrorist group. In fact, most of this terrorist
group's members who attacked us on 9/11 were from Saudi Arabia. So if we
should have gone to war against anyone other than Al-Qaeda, we should have
invaded Saudi Arabia. Also, prisoner exchanges have been going on for
centuries. All wartime American presidents have participated in them. Have they
all made extra sure that none of the prisoners exchanged had ever defected or
expressed disenchantment with the war? Doubt it.Facts can be pesky
things. Especially when your #1 priority is to make the President of the United
States a one-term President.Never let the well-being of America get
in the way of your partisanship!
Judging from the pictures of marines on fox news I can understand why we
haven't been successful militarily for the last half century.
@lost in DC"You should be GLAD they were sent there, otherwise your
defense industry job would be gone."That'd be a morally
bankrupt view to have...
Maverick,I see you’ve discovered a system for dealing with pesky
facts you do not like.how convenient you forget that the Taliban
harbored and supported al qaeda. Makes your attack so much easier when you
forget or ignore facts that do not support your position. We would be
better off had BO been a one termer; I AM looking out for the good of the
country.Schnee,Yep, I think that IS airnaut/open
U.S. Intelligence gathered enough evidence to convict Osama Bin Laden's
driver but cannot come up with any tangible evidence on the 5 Taliban that are
being released. They have been in incarcerated for 10+ years. They would be
released next year. The previous POTUS, released 500 from Gitmo of which at
least 1 is implicated in the Benghazi attack. Not a word has been said about
that. Ronald Reagan sent arms to Iran for hostages. The problem here is not the
action but who took the action. If this soldier is tried, convicted of treason
or desertion at least now he can face American justice rather than the
alternative, which I must say reading many posts lately from conservatives is
something they do not believe in.
@Lost in DCNot OB apologists, just folks pointing out the hypocrisy
on both sides of the isle. "His apparent desertion"Even Army investigators are not ready to make that charge and won't until
they can complete their investigation. Innocent until proven guilty and all
that..."you mean JFK and LBJ were conservatives when they sent
our sons to Vietnam to die?"Eisenhower sent the 1st troops to
Vietnam in 1955 and the first casualties occurred under his watch. Kennedy and
Johnson, both in agreement with Eisenhower's "domino theory,"
continued the fight in Vietnam as did Nixon initially on assuming office. The
last Democratic President to commit us to war was Truman and the war was Korea.
Since Bosnia was a NATO operation I'm not sure you can give Clinton credit
for sending us to war.
2B: The same President that got Bin Laden and ended the Iraq is now ending the
one in Afghanistan war. What is left for the anti-war protesters to protest??
PS. Her name is Cindy Sheehan and she is a Gold Star mother. She has
a right to protest.
"...apparent desertion...".Why wait for proof when you can
create a faux scandal based upon an apparent desertion. In a five day
cycle, the folks at FOX News and Drudge went from celebrating the return of a
soldier to castigating the soldier as a pariah. Why not wait for
the soldier to be returned to his family? Why not wait for the
military to investigate?BTW...Republicans apparently
only honor military service that can be judged/investigated/approved, solely
through Republican Media Outlets and Echo Chambers. It is no longer
apparent that the Republican Political Machine, as well as those who vote/buy
them into office, will blatantly attack anyone who can't be convicted of
being a Republican true believer...It is an absolute fact.
To "ECR" but the prisoners that were traded do not fall under the Geneva
Conventions because they were not from Afghanistan, and when captured did not
have a uniform that indicated who they were fighting for. In effect they were
mercinaries, and have been treated as such.To "airnaut"
actually the Republicans are sending thier own kids to die. More Republicans
sign up for military service than Democrats. Plus, did you know that since
Obama became President that we have lost more soldiers than during Bush's 8
years as President. It seems that the Democrats have even less worry about
sending our soldiers to die.
Redshirt1701 - I'm thinking that Richard D. Rosen, a retired Army colonel
who now directs the Center for Military Law and Policy at Texas Tech University,
whom I quoted in my post and who said the opposite of what you said, might have
a better understanding of the facts. It is important to realize that the
Taliban are different than al Queda and, in fact, were the ogvernment of
Afghanistan when we invaded that country. As Colonol Rosen said, they are the
defacto government of Afghanistan, they have been held for over ten years
without a trial and without due process and by the rules of the Geneva
Convention should be released when we conclude our wartime activities in that
country in 2016. That is unless you think we should throw 65 years of
precedence out the window and join the other rogue nations of the world.
@GZE 9:09 a.mRe: "If you are going to condemn a President,
remember Ronald Reagan"...It's kinda too late to worry
about what Reagan did... He's DEAD!How about we deal with
what's happening with the person who's President TODAY? And if you think nobody cared about Reagan's covert operations back
then... you have another think comming. But that doesn't mean
anything Obama does is all right!
Always fun to see the leftist nuts get riled up. I wouldn't make this many
excuses for the anointed one, if I liked the guy, agreed with him and got paid
for it. Pathetic how hard you aimlessly work to defend a fool who doesn't
have a clue. Laughable to see the foreign policy experts, and Geneva
Convention experts go on about what is right and wrong. Laughable to see that
they believe the Taliban will be abiding that convention. According to your own
expertise, when the war is over, they would have been handing back mr bergdal.
We didn't have to trade anything!Keep making up those excuses, it
gets funnier everyday. Heaven knows, with a liar and chief like this one,
you'll have plenty to keep yourselves busy!
my_two_cents_worthno, it was Truman who first got us involved in Vietnam
– the escalation was under JFK and LBJ. Nixon (R) got us out. There you go,Notice the word “apparent”. Sorry if
“apparent” confuses you.BTW...Dems apparently only
honor military service that can be judged/investigated/approved, solely through
Dem Media Outlets and Echo Chambers. It is no longer only apparent
that the Dem Political Machine, as well as those who vote/buy them into office,
will blatantly attack anyone who can't be convicted of being a Dem true
believer...It is an absolute fact.Grover,You are
OK with the powers that controlled Afghanistan when we were attacked on 9/11
re-assert themselves and repeat the attack? Really!!???BTW, BO left
Iraq under the timetable BUSH established, so BO is NOT the one responsible for
getting us out of Iraq. BO tried to negotiate to STAY LONGER!
@RalphRe: "I was't aware the Obama had a ranch"...Ummmm... it's not funny if you have to explain it. Do I really
need to draw you a picture?I'll try... Sandy Sheehan and her
followers set up tents and pledged to camp out at George Bush's Texas ranch
until he ended the wars. But the tents came down as soon as Obama was
elected. The wars didn't end... in fact, Obama immediatly
escalated them. And yet... Sandy Sheehan and the rest of the protesters just
disapeared. So evidently they weren't really protesting the wars
(because they were still going on, and even more troops were deing than before
after Obama took over)... and yet... no protests from Sandy Sheehan and the
other anti-war protesters (which turned out to just be anti-Repubulican
demonstrators... because they quit protesting as soon as a Democrat took over
the wars). That's the irony I'm trying to point out... they
protested the wars... right up until a Democrat took over the operation of the
wars... then Silence... But the wars were still ongoing... boys dieing... just
like when Bush was President.
This was more than just a "bad trade". There is something deeply corrupt
and very troubling about what Barack did. Let's review...1.
Barack skirted around the 30 day notice with congress over any prisoner
exchange. Even Democrats in the Senate were furious with this one.2.
Barack lied (along with the State Dept) about the status of Bergdahl. Bergdahl
was NOT sick. The reports were over 6 months old concerning his health. 3.
Team Obama mislead the American people regarding the status of Bergdahl calling
him an honorable soldier. Bergdahl's team and his commander all condemned
him calling him a absolute diserter and a possible traitor. These soldiers have
THE best intel on Bergdahl seeing that they commanded him and served beside him.
Bergdahl's fellow solidiers ALL said recently that calling Bergdahl an
honorable soldier was "a spit in the face" of every serving soldier. 4. Bergdahl sought out the Taliban - he was NOT captured by them. Bergdahl
renounced his ties to the American military and instead joined the causes of the
Taliban. Bergdahl's father also praised the Taliban and called for the
release of all Taliban killers held since 911. DISGUSTING !!
No one who has children in the military should ever vote for a Republican
president. Republicans are quick to start wars and don't believe in
returning POWs home as the conflict is ending.
2 bitsCottonwood Heights, UTThat's the irony I'm
trying to point out... they protested the wars... right up until a Democrat took

p.m. June 9, 2014======== That's the irony I'm
trying to point out... you supported the wars... right up until a Democrat took
over the operation of the wars... then whining and crying 24/7... Obama got us out, but it wasn't fast enough.Obama got Osama Bin
Laden, but it wasn't fast enough.Obama turned the economy around, but
it wasn't fast enough. The real problem in America today is you
can not consciously objective. It's partisan, one-sided, biaed, and
divisive. You can't see right from wrong, It's always
Republican good, Democrat bad -- no matter what.and THAT'S
where I'm taking issue with you guys....
@ patriot, please, turn off Fox.
@Redshirt1701Deep Space 9, UtTo "airnaut" actually the
Republicans are sending thier own kids to die. More Republicans sign up for
military service than Democrats.======== I did - twice,
You did not. That says all I need to know.
@airnaut,You judge me a lot, but you're not very on target.I support what our military is doing in Afghanistan today as much as I
did when Bush was President. It didn't change for me when Obama took
over. It changed for the Sheehan types... My support didn't change. This trade, and the escalation in troop deaths after Obama took over...
are the only things I have complained about. But I still think we did the
right thing back in 2001 and I think we are doing the right thing getting out
now (as long as we don't put the Taliban right back where they were back in
@Esquire..... the funny thing is Fox even ran a piece yesterday that countered
just about everything Patriot said. Must have been a great day on the
Beck\Limbaugh investigating hour today. Fox actually placed doubt that any of
the deaths had anything directly to do with the captured soldier. But
it is amazing how the "rush to judgement" crowd seems to have all these
facts all of a sudden... they know exactly what happened, what his motivations
were, where he was, and his feelings toward the Taliban. It is simply amazing.
They seem to know even more than those who were on the ground. They have
charged, tried and convicted this guy all by themselves.... @lost..... the first deployment of US Military aid happened November 1, 1955
whenPresident Eisenhower deploys the Military Assistance Advisory Group to train
the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. Unless I have my sequence of presidents
wrong.... Truman had nothing to do with the war itself. He had everything to do
with aiding in the liberation of Vietnam from the Japanese though. Different
To "airnaut" you should turn of MSNBC, they have lied to you. The fact
is that in in the few months before Bush left office he negociated a deal with
Iraq to withdraw the troops. Those troops were withdrawn exactly as Bush had
agreed to. Obama did nothing other than follow the agreement that Bush made.Actually Obama didn't get Bin Laden. The Navy SEALs did, and they
did it using information that was obtained using methods that Obama campaigned
against using.FYI the economy has not turned around, we have the
lowest job participation rate since Carter, and have yet to get DOWN to
Bush's unemployment average.It isn't a matter of
"Republican good, Democrat" it is a matter of freedom good, socialism
and oppression bad.
To "LDS Liberal" you sent Republican kids off to die, twice?Or are you saying that you died twice?Or were you a Republican
twice, and a Democrat once?Or did you sign up Republicans for the
military twice?I can't tell what you are trying to say.
Re: "Get something for these prisoners or just release them. Which is
better?"Liberal, true-believing, reality-denying,
Obama-supporter bleating notwithstanding, those were never the only two
choices. The fact that's all liberals can see is telling.
HaHaHaHa - No, I don't expect the Taliban to live by the terms of the
Geneva Convention, nor does anyone else. But I did expect our nation to abide
by those terms along withy other civilized nation.
embarrassed Utahn!:We all know what a 'bang-up' job George Bush
and Cheney did, right?Let's see... Democrats supporting
Bush/Cheney in Iraq... Hillary Clinton, John Karry, Joe Biden.
ECR"- How long should we hold prisoners of war at the prison in
Guantanamo without prosecution?"Until the war against Islamic
terrorism is over... which is almost never.Roland Kayser:"If President Obama had not brought Bowe Bergdahl home, the right would be
screaming for his impeachment for leaving our POW behind."No.
They're screaming about giving up five extreme terrorists. What about
giving up one for one?
ECR.... see the problem is, we have a whole segment of society that lets others
decide their morality for them. Instead of having standards of their own, they
simply react to what others have done, constantly lowering the bar.Wrz.... so should we hold people who use drugs in jail without being charged
indefinitely until the war on drugs is over? You are willing to let the
government declare wars on ideas... then lock people up based on these
"wars". And when exactly did congress authorize the declaration of War
on Terror?I think you are confusing rhetorical wars with real wars.
We were at war with Afghanistan. We were at war with Iraq. We were never at
war with Muslims.
