Thank you. Thank you for being a true man of honor. As a Veteran of another
war, I salute you! There is a reason why this good man and others, including my
own father who was a naval officer, are quite correctly labeled 'those of
the greatest generation'. I fully understand why you have never been able
to return to that horrific place. General Colin Powell said that America has
never sought land or place. We have only asked enough space to bury our dead.
May Heaven continue to bless you and may God continue to bless America even with
our modern day many weaknesses.
what a great generation of Americans - both those who fought and those at home.
America was indeed a GREAT nation duing the 1940's and it took a GREAT
people to defeat Hitler and the Japanese. We owe EVERYTHING to this great
generation. Sadly today's America isn't even a shadow of
what it once was.
My father did not talk about his experiences in the Pacific during the war until
shortly before he died, either; then it became important to him to share those
experiences. Sometimes we don't know what our loved ones have gone through
because it's to painful for them to talk about. Dad explains that during
the West Loch Disaster, he saw men swimming away from one ship that was sinking,
not knowing that they were swimming into the propellers of another ship trying
to escape. He also saw a man swim to the beach and sit down, thinking he was
safe, and an engine blew off a ship and landed on him. Many who went through
traumatic events such as these are reluctant to talk about the War because of
the painful memories it brings. Dad was one of the lucky ones. He
went through three campaigns plus the West Loch disaster and the only injury he
sustained was that his hearing was damaged when he was blown off his ship during
