40 minute response time?
@ WER - Local police and fire respond first and then determine whether there is
a need for search and rescue. And in Salt Lake County search and rescue are all
volunteers, so once the call is made it takes a while for folks to grab their
gear, leave their families, and reach the location.
My regrets to the family. As one who has avoided drowning on two
occasions with nothing more than dumb luck, I know that fairly minor errors in
judgement can lead to tragic situations.
Wer-The story is actually misleading. The response time was not 40
minutes. That is how long from the time he went under to when they pulled him
out. The 911 call took 6 minutes to go through and the first responders were
there in another 8 minutes. Dive team showed up a few minutes later and then
they began searching for about 20 to 25 minutes. So sad either way. I
so badly wanted to find him but it was dark under water and deep water.
I interested in what the temperature of the water is and what was the distance
of the swim. I'm sorry for their loss. I would not want my picture in the
news being in grief. The family and friends have my condolences.
the article didn't say 40 minute response time. If the man was in the
middle of the reservoir and the only one who was with him or saw him was the
co-swimmer, then no emergency responders would even be notified until the
co-swimmer swims back to shore and calls someone. The co-swimmer might have been
10 or 20 minutes away from finishing his swim to the shore. the article is
unclear on what the response time was.
Water was 60 degrees and the reservoir is maybe 150 yards across total. The
friend had made it to the other side and Joey was about 25 yards away from the
other side. The friend jumped back in to the water to start swimming back to
him. The 911 call was placed about 30 seconds after he went under but was on
hold for 6 minutes before they could report it to 911. His friend definitely
wasn't the only one who saw him go under or was looking for him in the
A lot of people take chances and statistics suggest that some will be taken,
Motorcyclists, corvette owners, sky divers, mountain climbers, etc.
this is just devistating for the family. My heart goes out to mom and dad and
everyone else in the family.
