David Tepper runs Appaloosa Management, last year he was the highest compensated
hedge fund manager in the U.S. He made 3.5 billion dollars last year, which
comes out to $1,750,000 per hour. If you understand hedge funds, they mainly
make their money by stripping assets from the rest of the economy, not from
creating anything of value. He did not make this amount because he
"What’s more, any social disintegration among low-wage workers, such
as the failure to marry...may be a symptom of their economic malaise rather than
its cause."Hitting the nail on the head.Who are you
and what have you done with the real DN editorial board?!?!
Spot on. Taking steps to encourage marriage and more stable families (thanks
Judge Shelby!), is an important part of the discussion about how to deal with
increasing income inequality. But the more significant causes of the increasing
gap between haves and have nots over the last 30 years have been our tax policy,
changing economy, the flight of good jobs to other countries, and the increased
willingness and desire of the wealthy to hide assets in offshore tax havens.
I'll know the Des News and other power players are serious about addressing
this issue when they stop talking solely about families breaking up and discuss
more significant causes of growing income and wealth inequality.
Jealousy is not an economic policy.Hate accomplishes no good.Jealousy and hate are more destructive to low income people than rich
people are.If democrats really want to narrow the income gap, they
need to implement policies that will promote so much production in this country
that companies are begging for workers, and new businesses can pop up and
prosper. But that would limit their power, so they won't do it. They would
rather blame the party not in power and hope the huddled masses continue to buy
their lie.Until the common man can see that the democrats in office
are keeping them in poverty to control them, they will continue to vote for
those who will keep them in poverty.Maybe someday the people will
So, DesNews, lifting families up economically is good for marriage and family
life. Your opposition to raising the minimum wage and your loud support for all
things Republican are actually harming your cause of helping build stronger
families. Think it through. Don't be so partisan. Moral issues go beyond
SSM and abortion. For example, unfettered carrying and use of guns in our
society. The degradation of the environment. The right wingers who flaunt the
law, including court decisions, because they want to take public lands for their
own purposes. Growing income disparity, supported by the trend to give a
disproportionate voice to wealthy interests to unduly drive our elected leaders.
These and other issues are disturbing trends, and the media voice of the Church
is oddly on board with the wrong side.
Is this horse not dead yet?
The highly touted 'traditional marriage' always seems to be in crisis
here. Maybe we should mix it up a bit...
Badgerbadger,Where in Baker's editorial did she mention hate
and jealousy? You are projecting conservative talk radio "talking
points" onto an editorial about the causes of inequality that is simply hard
to disagree with. And why do you think liberals are filled with hate and
jealousy? Most are simply filled with concern for the downtrodden and
disenfranchised. But go ahead, live in your fantasy world, where you can blame
the poor for their own misfortune by blindly claiming that they are poor because
they are lazy, and they are takers because they are selfish. Please turn off Fox
News. And DesNews, please, please keep Mary Baker. Her calm and
rational explanations are needed in a state so overrun with paranoia.
"...Yet you seem to waste a lot of time playing video games..." This is the elephant in the room no one wants to talk about. This is the root
cause of why more single women are settling for cohabitation and more men see
dating as a waste of time when the cow is free and they can spend all their
pocket money at Best Buy.
Ghandi made the statement, I'm paraphrasing, that when the worker tells the
Capitalist that he won't work for the wages he is is being offered, then
the capitalist will change his wages! Capitalism is not the culprit. Capitalism
is the best system ever created for creating wealth. Don't kill the goose
that can lay the golden egg! When you have millions of citizens with low self
worth, abetted by low morals (Marriage brings a lot of benefits, but mostly it
is an institution made by God), they become "victims" of those who would
take advantage of them! The answer is teaching children about God, which gives
boys and girls (soon to be men and women) the principles that will change the
way they view themselves. This philosophy runs counter to the prevailing
"answers",nevertheless, it is true. Marriage, and that honorably, makes
men go to work! As society continues to seek for answers, they are missing out
on the most important element for a stable society, marriage! Instead of
confronting the real issues in society(men honoring women and God), we want the
easy answer, such as blaming Capitalism, or worse, government subsidies for bad
Money is the root of all evil? marital strife included? No, THE LOVE
of Money the root of all evil, marital strife included. It is not
what you have or don't have. It is the way you let your lust for money sour
your attitude that makes you miserable. Very poor people in very poor countries
marry, and find happiness, without a fraction of the monetary things we
Americans have.If you think the rich caused your divorce, you are
fooling yourself. If you think the rich caused you to create a baby
out of wedlock, you are fooling yourself. It ain't the money.
Blaming the money is a cop-out.
I will throw this one out there. A lot of men aren't exactly lying around
in the basement in their underwear playing video games. A lot of men (and women
for that matter) are working two or even three jobs to pay the bills. This puts
a strain on any marriage. This makes it harder to be a more effective parent.
This is how I see our economy hurting marriage and families.
bandersen:I think in time Gandhi will be proven right in this
country. In fact, it has happened on small levels in the past and even now (in
certain places). At the very least that McDonald's employee won't
care too much about screwing up your order...
