3 out of 4 Region 9 teams made it to the playoffs. I would hope that now
something can be done in the future to allow solid team from Region 9 to play in
the playoffs. Desert Hills and Hurricane should have also qualified. With the
other weaker Regions with 2 less schools having the same number of playoff teams
as Region 9 is unfair. A number 3 or 4 seed from Regions 11 and 12 should not be
guaranteed a playoff slot. Good luck to the remaining teams. You all deserve to
be where you are.
It is fair. 4 regions, 4 teams each, 16 teams in the tournament. Everyone has
the same opportunity going in knowing they have to finish in the top 4 in their
region (it's much worse in 4A... take a look). In any given year, one
region will be stronger and any region can have the risk that a top 16 team
finishes 5th in the region but all regions are in the same boat. I see people
complaining but not offering of a solution or better way. What do you suggest.
I propose the only alternative is to do what other states do and Utah refuses to
do and that is form a committee to rank and hand pick the top 16 teams and seed
them 1 v 16, 2 v 15 and so on. That would solve another recurring problem of
the two best teams meeting in the quarter or semi final as was the case two
years ago when Wasatch and Dixie played in the semifinal. The problem with
picking the top 16 is that 17 and 18 will always complain that there was bias or
favoritism and you know that would happen.
I know that you and I will not solve the problem. Those with the power to change
it must first recognize there is a problem. There can be a solution that could
make the system more fair, but we will not be able to get it done. My motivation
for the previous post was to just point out the problem and hope that someone
with the power might do something about it. We shall see.
