I know a bad school board can make our schools hell for our teachers and
schools. They often make shortsighted decisions based on political pressure.
However, I welcome our the school board of our community. They seem to be a
breath of fresh air and want to make decisions to unify the community rather
than divide. T

achievement, and when they do so, it often means scoring high on tests that have
yet to show any measure of correlation between high scores and a successful
life.A board that focuses on student achievement is wonderful, as
long as that achievement means something beyond good scores on yet another

In Alpine School District we have a couple right-wing extremists who are more
focused on taking on the federal government than running a local school district
and student achievement. One is not even a supporter of public schools as
evidenced by where his kids go to school. Heaven forbid these extremists take
over the school board. It will be a disaster.

My experience is that the principals, not the school board, are the important
factor. I once served on the board of a private school whose principal was a
great PR guy, but advocated policies that many of the teachers thought were bad
for the kids. But five of the seven board members thought he was wonderful and
voted for everything he asked. It took a year for two more board members to
realize what was going on and refused to OK his proposals--upon which he
promptly resigned. The new principal came in and the school has flourished.
I've read this article twice and I still can't find the hard data
cited nor what is exactly meant (beyond broad and general labelling) of what
exactly is defined as a "good" school board or member, other than that
they are "moderate" interpreted as saying they are not advocates of
"developing the whole child" (such as music programs) and stress
achievment (sounds like some of Utah's past same old failed school reform

Too often board members are left- or right-wing cranks who mess everything up,
like this character in Davis County who wants "poor children' to stand
in a different lunch line and get peanut butter sandwiches. Open face.
Wow.So if leaders of schools focus on student achievement it can
impact student achievement. Now there's science!
