Ten or 15 years ago I read a collection of articles turned into a book written by a Catholic Priest who worked among the street people in an inner city neighborhood. He related stories that were heartbreaking and inspirational.

One article, though, talked about those who want a relic of the life of Jesus - a piece of the cross, or the spear that pierced Jesus heart or some such. He wrote that his desire was to have the bowl that Jesus used to wash the feet of his disciples at the Last Supper. He said he wanted to move among people, washing their feet, never looking up to see if it was a banker or street person, a prostitute or business executive.

That image has stayed with me all these years. I commend the Pope for his actions.
