Pride is overrated; ping pong balls are not.
The NBA draft will be deep this year; however, I'd rather see the Jazz
picking 4th than at 6th. In a couple of years, no one will remember these last
two games. What they will remember is who the Jazz picked.
You're wrong about the tie-breakers, Jody. Records against an opponent
aren't used as tie-breakers. If teams finish with the same record, they
split the lottery odds evenly with a coin flip used to determine who gets an
extra combination in the event of an odd number or to determine who picks first
if neither team moves into the lottery's top 3.
I'm pretty sure we can match any offer for hayward, so he doesn't
leave unless we really don't want him.
"Battling for pride"? Exactly how much pride could their be in beating
a team on a night that even Grandma's knitting club would win ? Someone
ask the Denver Nuggets if they are "proud" to have finished the season
one win better than San Antonio in 1997 ? If the Lakers are up by a point or
two to start the 4th quarter tonight, the Jazz should just hold the ball and not
take another shot. Who cares if they get T'd up, the Jazz need these
ping-pong balls in the worst way. Please Jazz, think about the future, not just
I would ask the Jazz fans a question. Is one win against the Lakers more
important to them with the possibility of losing a chance at a franchise player?
Or would they rather not take any chances, land a franchise player, and re-group
next season? This game should be played with the future in mind. Just to remind
Jody, if the Jazz lose, the Lakers and Jazz go into a tie-breaker. At that
point, it's a coin toss that determines who is fourth and fifth in the
draft. Don't be fooled, the Lakers will win the toss. We have all seen this
before but with much less consequences for the Jazz. The Celtics are likely not
going to lose to the 76's so it is likely going to be us and the Lakers for
that fourth spot. This game is not important to the Jazz to win for pride. It is
much more important to lose for the future of the franchise.
Unlike in the NFL, this "worst-gets-first" pick system does not work in
the NBA. So many fewer players to be drafted; so much more impact on their
teams for the top picks. The NBA should forget about weighted
ping-pong balls and go to a straight lottery system. Each team that does not
make the playoffs should have one ping-pong ball. The 14th worst team has the
same chance at the #1 pick as the worst team. This would eliminate the need for
this ridiculous tanking. The paying fans in SLC, Milwaukee, Philadelphia and
other cities have been cheated this year. They pay hard-earned bucks to come
and see their team win. Management would not have to put an outclassed team on
the floor in an attempt to lose. Go straight lottery and try to win all 82
games. It's a lot fairer than the present charade.
The Jazz better bench all the starters if they want to win this game. However it
should be noted that the 5th and 6th spots in the draft lottery have won it more
times than the 4th spot.
I do not know who it will be but the Jazz need to find either in free agency, a
trade or the draft a 2 or a 3 defensive stopper who can score 10 or more a game.
They have Favors down low but he is susceptable when Kanter is on the floor
with him. Sign Hayward, trade Kantor, sign Marvin Williams, use the
assets they have to get better defensively. They have shown they can score but
have been inconsistant at best. Defense was weak this year especially 3 point,
Kantor in the middle and transition. it looks like not only did Al Jefferson
show Kantor some offensive moves but how to play weak defense as well.
Two Predictions;1. The Jazz will win tonight. The Lakers are
better at tanking and Jazz still have a small amount of pride.2.
Gordon Hayward will not be back. I believe he will sign a very expensive deal
in the east and will not look back.
So the Jazz get a top 5 pick in draft. so what? They need a lot more than that.
Maybe they can sign Greg Oden in the off season. (sarcasm)
Take your ping pong balls and make beads out of them. Do you want to play
winning basketball or not?
Even with Stern gone, I'm predicting that the Lakers end up with a pick in
the 1st to 3rd range.
It doesn't matter either way. One high draft pick is not going to make the
jazz much better. Look how many top 10 picks they have already... and they are
@ Mark from Montana:I am afraid your predictions are going to be right.@TerryHaimes:Like I said in my other post, it is not "winning
basketball" when your opponent is playing on the same level as
Grandma's knitting club. Which is pretty much where the Lakers will be
tonight. The only winner tonight will be whoever ends up with more ping pong
balls. However, if I know the Jazz's mentality, they'll think a
win tonight is a "strong finish to the season".
NBA RULE 5Section 1 d. A field goal accidentally scored in an
opponent's basket shall be added to the opponent's score, credited to
the opposing player nearest the shooter and mentioned in a footnote.Accidentally tap a couple of missed shots in for the Lakers tonight Jazz.Make it look like an accident however, because shooting at opposing teams
basket on purpose is a violation. Section 1 e.
Play the end of the bench which should be Jefferson, Lucas, Rush, Williams,
Thomas, Clark and Murphy.
Farmhand: nice strategy. I'm curious what the penalty would be for
intentionally shooting at the opponent's basket - a technical foul,
resulting in Laker free throws? I agree that scoring for the Lakers should be
done discreetly though - we don't want anybody outside of Utah to think we
OsgrathHere is what Rule 5 - section 1 e. says:"It
is a violation for a player to attempt a field goal at an opponent's
basket. The opposing team will be awarded the ball at the free throw line
extended." It doesn't say anything about a technical, but
I'm sure the refs would T the Jazz up, if it happened, especially more than
one time. Probably lead to some ejections. That is okay however, because the
Jazz could then sub in Gail Miller, and a couple of ushers if needed.
So much for battling for Pride... Would have been nice to see some battle...
I just hope at some point in some season we can see the fight come back.
