The 5 newcomers listed look like a complete team, with Fischer playing the
point, Chatman, 2, Aytes the 3, and Andrus the 5, Nielsen the 4 spot. Wondering
how Coach can work with them in the summer? There is no summer camp sanctioned
by NCAA for D-1 BB is there? Will they be going abroad to do some kind of tour?
Hope springs eternal, and a good thing, as it looks like it might be only then
the Cougars will get into a final 4, or Championship game.
I'm still not liking the fact that Carlino will not be on the team... We
need a "playmaker" that can hit mid-range shots and 3's... And most
of all, one who can hit their free throws... I know nothing about the new guys
other than what has been described in DN articles and I'm walking away with
the belief that we will be strong at the #2 and the #3, and deeper in the #4 and
#5 but still very weak at the #1...Fischer sounds like an undersized
#2 to me based on his stats and the description and we already have a bunch of
solid #2s... although we don't have great 3 ballers... I am looking forward
to seeing Aytes and Nielsen... I'm a little hesitant about Andrus in that
he had no Rival or ESPN ratings on him at American Fork HS (which is odd for a
6'10" kid)...I love Rose though. I think that he is one of
the best coaches in America, and if he says he is happy then I guess we should
be also...I'd still feel a lot more comfortable if someone
could talk Carlino into staying for his Senior Year...
They are allowed to do skill development a few hours per week during the summer
Andrus is a nice young man.At 6'10, he was able to do things
against HS opponents that will simply not happen D1.It will be good
for him to experience tough competition daily in practice as well as in whatever
minutes Coach Rose can find for him...That experience coupled with 2
years to think about it from time to time will help him greatly. He
is not Mika...but who is?
Actually Fischer is a decent sized 2 guard, at 6'3" that's the
same size as Winder and Frank Bartley. He brings the 3 pt shooter we
haven't had for several seasons. Chatman will pick up some minutes at the
point, especially if Collinsworth is slow to recover from his knee injury. Having Aytes, Andrus and Nielson will add some depth to the front court.
Nielson has a 7'3" wingspan and will have his biggest impact in the
paint on defense. We haven't really had a defensive presence like that in a
while. Even if he doesn't block a ton of shots, he'll alter a lot,
that will help tremendously. It's my hope that Pope can light a fire under
Austin with Mika gone and get him to step up and be more aggressive around the
basket. There's no reason why he can't give the team a consistent 8-10
pts a game just from garbage points around the basket. We're
getting a little deeper in talent but we're still young at several
positions. Next season will probably be similar to this one unless a few of the
newcomers surprise us.
I feel like we will be slightly better in 2014/15 than last year. We will not
be as strong at the 5, but should be better in every other position. I see Austin being moved to the 5 with Nielsen and Worthington as the backups.
Jamal will start at the 4, with Austin as the primary backup and
some minutes from Sharp.Tyler, Chase and Kyle will get most of the
minutes at the 3 and 1. Tyler and Chase will give us a couple of legit 3 point
shooters. Winder and Chatman will provide excellent depth.Although
I will miss him, with this lineup, Carlino had to see his minutes taking a hit
from this season.
