In anticipation of the matchup with UConn, I reflect on Herb Brooks pre-game
speech to the 1980 Winter Olympics USA Hockey Team as they were to face the
USSR, with adjustments to fit the circumstances. "Great moments... are born
from great opportunity. And that's what you have here, tonight. That's
what you've earned here tonight. One game. If we played 'em ten times,
they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight, we shoot with
them. Tonight, we stay with them. And we shut them down because we can! Tonight,
WE are the greatest women's basketball team in the country. You were born
to be basketball players. Every one of you. And you were meant to be here
tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It's over. I'm sick
and tired of hearing about what a great basketball team UConn has. This is your
time. Now go out there and take it." When BYU wins, this will go down as
one of the greatest moments in BYU Sports. You carry the banner and have
represented BYU terrifically. Go get'em Cougars!
Amen to Rob of NV!!
I love Rob's spunk.Unfortunately, UConn's time is not
done. But hey, we can party for one more day.
Rob, beautiful and inspiring.
Here we go again with the Utah slant. Articles like this really do BYU a
disservice and elicits unkind remarks that I will just keep to myself. BYU is
not a Utah state school. And so far, BYU sports programs with only local Utah
talent does not impress national audiences. Despite the article I hope the
girl's team wins it all.
Some people look at this BYU opportunity to win and ask HOW? I look at this
great opportunity to shine and ask, HOW NOT? 1. Decide to do it,
to end the game with more points to get the win. 2. The 1st second the
game begins, don't think, just do, with all your heart and soul, believing,
MOVE! GO! 3. Every difficult moment, treat as a point of thrust into
a positive 10-0 run. 4. Know as you go, you have infinite energy, keep up
the push, no lulls but constant, confident, consistent flow...score, score,
score, and move on. 5. When its all over and you have won, you will
know you've just come home, to the place you knew you would BE when you
started out. Enjoy the moment, you've earned it!
This is beyond a Cinderella story. There are no Davids or Goliaths on the
respective rosters. But this will be an epic battle between tenacious will and
top rated national talent. We've got them just where we want them!
I tuned into the BYU-Nebraska game the other night and I have to admit the
quality of basketball was much worse than expected. Teams were missing layups,
BYU couldn't dribble under pressure. I even watched BYU dribble the ball
into the backcourt for a violation without being pressured. It was hard to
watch. It's great BYU is in the final 16 but now I know why the
arena's are near empty. The basketball play is very poor in the
I love to watch the players work so hard. Awesome that BYU pulled the two upsets
vs higher ranked/higher seeded opponents. If I lived closer I would certainly
come and cheer for the team. I did actually get to a women's volleyball
game this season. Impressed with the quality of both women's basketball
and volleyball...better than expected. The four-point victory vs Nebraska was
obviously a nail-biter.
There is still more local talent than what you mentioned in your article.
