I wonder what the modern world would look like without the Jewish invention of
monotheism. There is a whole sub-genre of fantasy and
science-fiction that deals with "alternate history" questions like this.
As a fan of those stories it does make me wonder what a difference that one idea
made on the course of history. I imagine there would be a lot less
of the "my god is the only god, my truth the only truth and so I have to
kill you for believing differently" mindset. I imagine that a
society not shaped by the idea of one truth and one acceptable mode of behavior
might be more open to recognizing personal choices and personal freedom. I imagine that science might prevail more readily in a society that
welcomes new ideas rather than a society that sees any new idea as a challenge
to religious truth - I wonder, without the religious imperative to stomp new
ideas if we would already be living on other planets?
