"But they can almost guarantee a win if they just defend the perimeter and
make their charity tosses."They can almost guarantee a win if
they do two things they haven't done very well for most of the season?
The play of Matt Carlino will be a key to how the game goes against Oregon on
Thursday. If he plays his best defensively, then his offense will come, Oregon
will hit fewer threes and he will hit more. And Matt can pass like a wizard
when he is in focus. He must make up for the loss of Kyle C., by hitting the 3
on O., denying it on D.
They must remember that they are better than Oregon and that our program is a
legacy basketball program.
Losing Collingsworth is going to hurt. Winder is a much better perimeter
defender and has made a difference. Let's just hope Carlino is hot in this
tourney. To Chris B and the Utes, enjoy the NIT.
Great article--well researched and excellent writing. Thanks.
Last year, BYU played their best basketball in the post season, albeit, in the
NIT. They played relaxed, aggressive, passed the ball well, and shot well. If
Carlino shows up and with good ball movement, I think BYU has a chance.
They'll have to play over their heads, but there have been times this year
when they have looked brilliant. No question, the players and especially the
coaches will need to bring their A-game. It is possible.
2 things to remember:1. Score more points than the other team2. Don't get injured
I disagree with the strategy to win in this game. BYU knows it's struggles
and doesn't do anything about them. FT is awful, 3 pt defending is awful,
defending under the rim is awful....those things won't change because they
haven't changed all season. They must play their game....they must be a
top 3 scoring team, top 10 rebounding team, and top 25 assist team. They must
play to what they do well. Play a track meet game with Oregon and be aggressive
with the boards. Trying to change what they are terrible at won't make a
difference. Play Oregon's game and find their weaknesses as well. Oregon
does not rebound well. Focus on that and get offensive boards. They
can beat Oregon, just have to play well to what they do best and have that as
Portland by 15+. It will be another embarrassing loss for the boys in blue.
I agree with striker. If they haven't improved yet in those areas by now,
it's because they can't or they don't want to. I do think they
can be more aggressive defensively then they have been and try to get a few
steals, but BYU is going to beat Oregon if they get the offense going. If
Collingsworth were playing, I'd have picked the Cougars. Just don't
think they can do it without him. Pound the boards and hope Haws and Carlino get
hot and maybe Oregon has a bad day shooting. Good luck Cougars.
I don't want to be pessimistic, but if we haven't solved the perimeter
damage and free throw problems by now, I don't think it's going to
happen with Oregon. And Haws keeps saying "We're playing our best
basketball". Say what? Sure didn't look like it against
Gonzaga...Haws is playing good free throws, yes, and Winder is good there too,
so those guys have to get fouled a lot. It will be interesting to see who will
handle the void left by Colllinsworth. Sure won't miss his bricks, but he
was a mobile guy around the basket. I like Sharp's hustle. Where did
Halford go? I hope we're not a one-game wonder again. Good luck, stay
humble and fight, fight, fight!
They lost to Oregon during the regular season in overtime. They'd have won
that game and several others if they have made free throws. You make free
throws you have 4 more wins. Two things to consentrate on next year.
Free Throws and defense.
Over the last five games BYU is 4-1. Here's their average line...79
points to 73 for opponent, 46% FG, 35% 3PT, 72% FT, 39 rebounds, 12.1 Assists,
7.8 steals, 2 blocks, 12 turn overs, and 19.4 personal fouls.So for
those who are indicating that we have a loooong way to go on defense and free
throw shooting, I'd agree with Carlino and the other players who say we are
currently playing our best ball of the season. 74% free throw shooting (86 vs.
San Fran) isn't too shabby. Either is 7.8 steals/game. For a win vs.
Oregon we need to keep the intensity up, let Rose coach (he's done a great
job with lineup changes), and enjoy a high scoring game vs a very good team.
Can't wait. Go Cougs!
BYU will be lucky to get a win, I'd be surprised if they do. But really
Ute fans, you still can't set the vitriol aside even after the embarrassing
effort last night? Get a life; if your life is centered around slamming the
Cougars as an outlet against your dislike for a particular religion you really
I keep thinking it, but have been hesitant to say it: With Collinsworth out,
that might help the FT percentage. However, it sure does hurt in a
lot of other areas.Time for somebody(s) to step up.
I have a hunch that BYU can steal this one. Oregon is good not great. And BYU is
playing much better defense than when they played Oregon last.Missing Collinsworth, their best player is the issue. Gotta fill that gap
somehow.I don't see BYU winning two games, but I think they
will beat Oregon.
I think what Wiscougarfan wrote is right on. Haws is crrect in saying they are
playing their best ball of the year. Go cougs!
