Is this considered None and Done if the U looses in the first round? I'd

Now the utes can show how weak the WCC really is.
Utah was projected to be a NIT #2 to #5 seed. So not a bad seeding after the
embarrassing loss against Arizona. I think it's good that we
play on the road. It's another chance to improve, Utah finished 3-3 on the
road/neutral sites.SMC lost 3 games at home, including a thumping by

Congratulations to the Utes, UVU, Weber State and all of the PAC 12 teams
playing in the post season.
I'm good with a solid NIT berth and I like the matchup. Having watched both
teams on several occasions, Utah wins this one going away.
How ironic is this? BYU plays a PAC12 team, Utah plays a WCC team...
It's disappointing that Utah didn't get a home game. I'm sure
the dismal performance against Arizona didn't help.
"Now the utes can show how weak the WCC really is."Seeing as
how the cougs couldn't . . .
Wow a #5 seed. That is a slap in the face. Time to get back to reality. Just
because you get beat by better opponents doesn't make you prestigious. #5 seed. Wow.
It is a road game, probably loose in the high school gym.
Opening on the road doesn't sound like a #2 seed.
Worf, the PAC 12 will improve the 7-2 record for PAC 12 over wcc teams this year
@ worfThey don't have to. It's been done for them over
the course of the season.Still, I hope Utah can get another road win
and put a little run in the NIT together.Go Utes!
Wow, a 5th seed on the road against a team that Utah better not overlook? I
guess the NIT wasn't as impressed with Utah as all the hacks on the PAC12
network that picked them to play Arizona tight and fight for an NCAA berth.
I'm a Utah basketball supporter but I get real sick of some of their fans,
who incessantly haggle and exhibit all manner of vitriol against my Cougs. I
want every Ute fan to back up their words on BYUs article...all the "one and
done" garbage. When BYU beats your "prestigious" Ducks, y'all
better come back and take your medicine (ya right, I'll wait til pigs
fly).Good luck Utes, but I have no lost love for your fans (well
some of them anyway).
Ouch...some folks who like to mock the "high school gyms" in the WCC
aren't going to appreciate the irony of the NIT picking one of those gyms
over the Huntsman Center.Frankly, it is surprising since the NIT is
known to grant home games based on the likely attendance (read revenue
generation) and it was widely reported that Utah made a pitch for a home
game.In any event, good luck to the Utes.
BYU swept the Gaels 84-71 at home and 60-57 on the road, so if the Utes are
really as good as they keep saying they are Utah should win this one easily. Then again, the Utes also expected to beat Arizona in Las Vegas.
Congratulations to the Utes, they should go deep into the tournament. No excuses
if they don't.
Apparently at least the number 4 team in the WCC ranks above the number 8 team
in the PAC 12. How does that happen.

Despite all the digs against this Utah team by the BYU faithful, this is a huge
accomplishment for Utah! The program was in the toilet just 3 years ago with a
new coach and very few talented recruits. From 6 wins to 15 to 21 is a
testament to the excellence of the coaching staff and the hard work of the
current players.I'm disappointed with the 5 seed because I
wanted to see them host a home game but happy that they are back in post-season

I am sooooooo glad that there are people in the NCAA seeding the teams that have
a better grasp on basketball reality than u fans on the hill that think utah
should have been in the big dance with their pacthethic occ schedule.
Conference afiliation means nothing at this point. The pac is weaker than most
people think and it will show as the tourney wears on.
Given all the "name" bias that goes on with east coast schools and what
little respect is afforded the mountain time zone all year round, would normally
be excited for BYU (alumni), Weber State and the Utes -- rooting for all three.
But following the state of Utah here in the DN and SLT,and reading all the
garbage comments from Ute fans, hope for (and expect) a loss to St. Marys.
the Utes are sniffing the cougars feet again…always hoping…always
disappointed….you going to point to the PAC12 is good so maybe that sorta
kinda means the Utes are good too? even though your schedule paled in
comparison to BYUs….you can beat BYU and still no one gives you any
cred…you jokers stay north of the point of the mountain, please…St
Mary's tiny gym is preferred over the Huntsman…at least St
Mary's can fill there gym.
Sour grapes much? Too funny.
Since Utah already crushed BYU we should beat St Mary...of course it does not
always work that way. Utah will be a monster next year, the Utes
featured 5 Sophomores in their regular rotation this year and they were strong
in one of the best conferences in the nation not to mention they have a ESPN TOP
50 recruit joining them next year. If basketball teams were a stock, Utah would
be a HUGE BUY!
...how could the WCC give SMC a home game? Haven't they heard that the
Huntsman Center is a PAC 12 venue? Don't the Gaels play in a "high
school" gym? Perhaps they looked at actual attendance instead of just empty
red seats available?
@Phantom BladeThe same thing that happened to BYU when they played

the number of classless comments posted from each fan base on the DN, you'd
find more BYU fans posting classless comments. Regardless, I wish the DN would

The WCC is not a weak conference. They might not be as good as the PAC-12 which
is a Super Conference, but the NCAA selection committee recognized the WCC as
being a tough conference by weighing in on all of the factors. At the start of
their regular season, ALL WCC teams posted winning records. During the regular
season anyone could, and did, beat anyone on any given night. Utah should be
able to squeak by St. Mary's. Maybe in overtime like Oregon did over BYU
in their first meeting.
So...uh...why is the WCC team with the high school gym awarded the home game and
not the pac12 team with the "big" arena?lol
This is a nice setup for the Utes. I think people forget the Utes are still
rebuilding the program andb its great the Utes get to play a very winable road
game. Let's face it, like most young teams, the Utes need to learn how to
win on the road and they have a good opportunity to do that. I'm a cougar
fan, but still root for the Utes and am looking forward to some good battles in
the coming years between both teams, who have some great recruiting classes
coming in for the next few years.
To some posters, the post about byu playing a pac12 team and Utah playing a wcc
team and that being hilarious was not meant as a jab to either team, just funny
irony, at least that is how I took it. I think the Utes will win this one. St.
Mary's has really been struggling and the Utes have been playing better.
If they win, then they play the #1 seed on the road, but anything can happen.
It is true, the utes have been playing better on the road as the season went on,
but only played one road non-conference game. Wonder what might have happened
if the utes had played a tougher schedule out of conference. I wish the Utes
luck and all the teams from Utah playing. I hope they all compete hard and
represent their school well.
The Utes and their Pac-12 facility was beat out by WCC high school gym?
To Spokane Ute, just a correction, the only common opponents for St. Mary's
and Utah were byu and boise st. The usc that St. Mary's played was south
Carolina, not Southern Cal. So, also, St. Mary's only played byu twice,
not three times. so the actual record is 2-1 and 1-2, with the difference being
the game against byu at byu. Let's just get the facts correct here. It is
never good to talk smack and not know what you are talking about.
@BYU9293My mistake, you are correct. I looked at the SCU symbol
under there schedule and assumed it was USC. St. Mary's hasn't played
anyone from the PAC 12. As a matter of fact, they only played one team from top
conference (Big 10, PAC 12, Big East, ACC, SEC), a loss to South Carolina. The
only common opponent would be BYU. Utah beat BYU; St. Mary's lost to them
twice. I know what I'm talking about, but certainly made an error in this
case. Good catch. More than any of that, I base my position on having watched
Gonzaga crush St. Mary's 3 times this year. I could be wrong, but I see the
Utes beating the Gaels.
The NCAA snubbed the Utes. We had a better record than Stanford and we beat
Stanford. We also had the same record as Colorado and Arizona State. We play
in the prestigious Pac12 and we beat every team except Arizona which is the best
team in the west. We won almost all of our pre season games and half of our
prestigious Pac12 games. The selection committee should have looked at our NCAA
Tournament history and seen that we went all the way to the final game once.
Our best pre season win was against the BYU who made it into the NCAA. We beat
the Cougars and the Cougars beat the St. Marys twice so this should be a walk in
the park game for us.
There is no doubt that Utah took it to the Cougars this year in their single
game. The Cougars did well in match up with St. Mary's this
year.It will be interesting to see how that match-up between the
Utes and St. Mary's plays out.I am thinking that the Utes might
find that the WCC is not the weak sister conference that their fans wish it was.
St. Mary's knows how to play some ball and for the Utes to go to play in a
gymnasium that will remind them of their high school days may cause some mind
adjustment to occur.Fun time of the year!
Funny how all the TDS fans want to rag on the Utes when the Utes own them in
Football and Basketball. Feeling like a little brother are you? Say how's
that Deseret Duel coming along? Has your school earned ten points yet?
It's hilarious watching the obsessive Cougar fans jump on a comment thread
like this to belittle the Utes and their fans. You'd think from the
comments here that that the 8th place Utes were just dominated in the Pac 12 ...
yet in reality they would've finished 3rd with just one more made basket
which they had a chance at in several games. Chances are good as well that the
Utes would be in the NCAA tourney had that happened. But it happened the
way it happened and it's part of the learning process for this team. So
here we are and I'm not complaining about the NIT bid, nor do I care what
seed Utah is. In fact, I was hoping Utah would NOT get awarded with a home game.
The next step in the progression of this team is to get out on the road and pick
up some wins. Saint Mary's won't be a pushover but they're
certainly beatable ... perfect for what this Utah needs at this time.Go
I expect the beat down at the hands of St Mary's will be close to the beat

is going to win by 20 points, high school gym, etc. etc. So yeah, I'm going
to laugh hysterically if Utah loses.
Facing reality, many college teams are night and day different at home and on
the road. I understand a little differential, but the huge gap for many teams
is a mystery to me. Sure Utah walloped BYU in Salt Lake City, but chances are
pretty good the result would have been equally lopsided in BYU's favor for
a game played in Provo. BYU is wildly inconsistent, sometimes terrible on the
road, and Utah is not one bit better, probably worse to some extent, hence the
difference in national rankings. Both are pretty darn good at home. Anyone thinking St. Mary's on the road will be a "walk in the
park" for Utah, or that Utah will win "going away" is delusional.
It's a winnable game, as long as Utah breaks their pattern and plays closer
to they way they play at home. But they rarely play that way on the road, so
the predictions of a rout are pretty silly, and if they play a typical road
game, a loss is the most predictable result.
@CougandSundevilOne thread you wish you good luck, and the next
thread you are taking shots at them. Just because your teams went 1-2 vs. Utah
in Hoops is no reason to be bitter. Or be bitter, but at least be consistent.
@DSBLet's revisit this after the game. Having an educated
opinion and being "delusional" are two totally differen't things.
Watching St. Mary's vs Gonzaga 3 times this years was enough for me. They
got slaughtered every time. I guess we will find out soon enough.

@ ogmsonUtah beat UCLA, and won 9 other conference games (including

Comments such as Dave M's in Sammamish always bring a smile to my lips."We won almost all of our pre season games and half of our prestigious
Pac12 games. The selection committee should have looked at our NCAA Tournament
history and seen that we went all the way to the final game once." I thought everyone knew that strength of OOC schedule was a deal-breaker for
teams on the margin. So winning 50% of your games because of the PAthetiC
portion of the PAC-12--USC, OreSt, and Wazzu--did not impress anyone but the
diehard portion of the crimson crew.As for programs' tournament
history, final fours 15 years ago or championship 70 years ago do not matter to
the selection committee.Good luck at SMC. That high school gym
could be treacherous.
For Utah to gain some confidence heading into next year, they need to win
several games in the NIT. The extra practice is much needed as are some off
season weight room sessions by every player on the roster, especially Delon
Wright and Loveridge. The games they struggled in were teams who played them
very physical. They won't progress until they become much more physical. As for BYU versus Oregon, the first game Haws torched the Ducks and
Collinsworth had a nice game. No Collinsworth means the Ducks will double team
Haws and make someone else on that roster try to beat them. The Ducks are
precisely the kind of team BYU has struggled against in the tournament...long,
athletic, and quick. Without an inside threat and the Ducks entire defensive
strategy geared to shutting down Haws, BYU will struggle on offense and we know
their defense isn't great. A double digit Duck win wouldn't be
@ Two for Flinching:If the BYU win was their 11th biggest win, then
why did almost all Ute fans obviously get more excited about that particular win
than any other? And Ute fans (like you) comment way more about the BYU game than
any other of the season... by far! That game was played months ago and you and
many other Utes are still here today commenting about it. You're even
hilariously trying to downplay it. Not fooling anyone. If Utah's
next game was on the road, I'd put money on them. But on the road,
they've shown almost no consistency. That's a fact. They played
Arizona really tough in SLC. But on the road against the same team, they got
completely blown off the court. They are often like 2 different teams when at
home versus out on the road. Honestly, it's very hard to know what to
actually expect. Saint Marys is a little bit the same way. Sometimes
they play really great basketball. Then two games later, one wonders if
they're the same team. This game is extremely difficult to predict. Both
teams have the potential to win going away.
ex patria cougarAustralia, 00It's tournament time:Utes -- Welcome to the WCC. BYU -- Welcome to the Pac-12Hilarious.Enjoy it while you can. Unfortunately, that's as
close to the PAC 12 you will ever get.
People put too much stock in the fact St Marys lost to Gonzaga multiple times
this year and badly. But Utah is not Gonzaga or even close, unless they are in
the Huntsman Center. They can then be quite impressive. But St Marys has had
some impressive wins, as well.Utah probably won't be playing in
the Huntsman Center again this season. And they don't play nearly as well
on the road, as we witnessed in their last game. To lose by 30+ points to any
team in the nation is a total embarrassment. If that same team shows up
tomorrow, St Marys will win going away. But that's a big if. No one knows
which Utah team will show up tomorrow. Every team is better at home
than on the road. And St Marys will be at home tomorrow. Granted it's a
small gym. But Utah has lost in small gyms before. And St Marys has beat some
very good teams in their small gym. Someone else mentioned that both
teams played at Boise this season. St Marys won. Utah lost. That doesn't
bode well for Utah. So their fans shouldn't talk smack yet.
The misplaced arrogance of Utah fans is laughable. You do realize,
don't you, that the mighty weak Utes were seeded in the LOWER half of the
NIT, behind Saint Mary's?That tells you all you need to know
about what the experts really think about Utah on a national scale.Utah simply got lucky that they caught BYU at home on an off night with
Loveridge shooting lights out to start the game. You can live in denial if it
helps you sleep at night, but everybody knows that BYU would have stomped the
hapless road Utes in a return visit to the Marriott Center where the Utes have
NEVER beaten BYU during the Dave Rose era.

@ Stinger Bell:That's actually as close to the PAC12 as many
Cougar fans care to get. After seeing how Utah is still way over their heads in
that conference... especially in football, and still in the bottom tier in
basketball... being in the PAC12 isn't yet worth it. Especially if all you
have to show for it are little stickers. It's interesting, and
a bit sad, how supportive Ute fans have shifted much of their allegiance from
their team to their conference. Their team can't cut it, so they talk up
their conference affiliation. That truly doesn't impress many people. Being
a competitive team in a mid-level conference seems preferable to being
uncompetitive in a bigger conference. As far as I know, Utah has yet
to finish in the top half of any major sport since joining the PAC12. To deflect
attention away from that, online fans often just talk about how tough their
conference is, rather than admitting they're still over their heads. When that gets pointed out, they sometimes come back with something so
trite as "Yea, we're bad. But we're part of a prestigious
conference." How pathetic.
@ogmson "Remember ute fans, the only game your mediocre team can get up

@ SagaciousConference wins are more important than non-conf. wins,

Loveridge has struggled on the road regardless of team.If he
doesn't show up then I see a close loss on the road, like all year long.

Good luck to the U in the NIT. Great prep for your next season.
Saint Mary's is not all that good this year. I expect Utah will win but
not easily because they will be playing on the road and the refs tend to give
SMC every break.

ONLY Top 100 team Utah beat away from the HC during the entire season.--------------And we lost at #208 Washington State and #101
Washington during the first half of PAC-12 play. We squeaked by #101 Washington
but you forgot to mention #31 Colorado, #40 Stanford, and #44 ASU squeaked by
Utah. So what? What's your point? Are you claiming that Utah
wasn't any better in the 2nd half of the season by going 7-4 including 3-3
away from the HC?Utah was competitive in every game this year but
two, Arizona and UCLA.
Utah overachieved this season. BYU fans, why should you care enough to comment
on this thread considering Utah was not expected to win as many conference games
as they did? The loss to Arizona in the tournament was not as shocking as the
fact that Utah held their own twice against the Wildcats. It is
remarkable that all of you seemed to have higher expectations of Utah than the
more realistic Ute fan base. Utah was not expected to go to the NCAA tournament
this year or place as high as they did in the final standings. As
for the seeding in the NIT, who really cares. BYU is seeded 10th and many of
your own fan base agrees they have no business being seeded that high. NCAA
tourney brackets are notorious for getting blown up after the first round of
games, which is why the games are played. St. Mary's won more games than
Utah, therefore they got the higher seed. Let's all continue
this dialog after the games this week and see how things come out, shall we?
I'm predicting a smaller turnout by all the Cougar fans later in the week.

Just Wondering...Gilbert, AZ...how could the WCC give SMC a home
game? Haven't they heard that the Huntsman Center is a PAC 12 venue?
Don't the Gaels play in a "high school" gym? Perhaps they looked at
actual attendance instead of just empty red seats available?-----------What an idiotic remark. In attendance, Utah
quadrupled St Mary's all season long. You lose. Little brother.
MUSSing with UBaltimore, MDThe misplaced arrogance of Utah fans is
laughable. You do realize, don't you, that the mighty weak Utes
