How sad that the world does not see the importance of the works of the ladies of
the Church. It doesn't take having the priesthood for these ladies to make
a great impact on the world and on the Church. I applaud the marvellous work the
I would like to make a small correction about women and the right to vote.
Wyoming was the first territory (1869) and Utah was the second territory (1870).
Wyoming was also the first state (1890). But Utah was not the 2nd state, Women
in Colorado were given the full right to vote in 1893. Utah and Idaho did not
give women the right to vote until 1896. The way the article reads implies Utah
was the first STATE, with Wyoming 2nd, but in actuality Utah was 3rd.
But I do love the fact that the Relief Society has been such an important part
of the Church since, organization in 1842. It has been an important part of my
life since I was 18 and left home to go to college. Before that I learned from
my mother how vital an organization it is. I am thankful for the Relief Society
and happy to be a part of such a great organization.
Mormon women did have the right to vote in the western Mormon colonies. The
Federal Government refused to allow Utah to become a state if the women had the
right to vote.
Just a bit of trivia for justmesal: Although women in Wyoming had the right to
vote first, because of the election timing, women in Utah Territory actually
So many LDS women are totally amazing!! What wonderful women we can look to as
we men attempt to live Christ-like lives. I am truly in awe of all the good
that these women do and other women as well.
In my experience I haven’t heard much about the Relief Society doing much
of these sorts of things today, but I really wish it would. The Relief Society
is a remarkable organization with enormous potential, which is barely being
tapped by the sisters of the Church today—when such service and
accomplishment is most desperately needed.
@antodavI could write volumes of the quiet, anonymous service given by
thousands upon thousands of these sisters as they minister to those in need..
How do I know this? My wife was President for a few years and is now councilor
for a few years more in a different ward. She and so many others are consumed
by the desire to serve and to minister in secret to those in need. So many
sisters throughout the Church every day are ministering quietly under the radar
unselfishly. Truly they are instruments in the hand of the Lord. He answers
the prayers of the needy through the sisters of the Relief Society when prompted
by the Holy Spirit. It is not accurate to state that the potential of the Relief
Society is barely being tapped. All over the world their service is being felt
where it is desperately needed. They hardly ever make headlines...but that is
how it should be.
