This game is embarrassing. Does BYU have an offense? Gonzaga calmly passes the ball around until someone is open. BYU's spacing is terrible, and they end up with someone going one on 5.

Haws has been stinking it up for weeks now. He plays no defense and is constantly throwing up out of control shots. It's very selfish play and not going to get BYU far unless he starts playing team ball and quit relying on others to bail the team out from his costly mistakes. He seems to have been way overrated. Bench him and lets see this team play as a unit with the same team goals.

Honestly I would rather have BYU go to the NIT and win a couple of games than go dancing and lose in the first round. At least we could maintain the illusion that they are a great team.

BYU fans would agree that, "[Gonzaga] appeared to try and give the game away! You'll remember that the [Zags] missed 5 of 6 (or was it 7 of 8) free throws in the final three minutes."

Still, BYU never had a chance of winning this game. This was the 5th time BYU got thumped this year.

    One and done or NIT?

    Waiting game begins for BYU...

BYU may make the NCAA tournament, but they will be watching the other conference tournaments closely.
For example, New Mexico and SDSU are in. If UNLV wins the MWC tournament, then that is another spot taken. Bracketologist may have BYU in right now, but they can't predict how every conference tournament will go.
Could be a long week for BYU.

Too bad for the Cougs. Coach Dave Rose doesn't really know how to make adjustments and he just can't coach these guys to play an inside out game. All year long, opposing teams would collapse into the center and the Cougs would just try to force it up.

Then, when they would find it tough going in the paint, they would just start hiking up 3's in desperation. These guys just couldn't seem to make the step up from premier highschool level, to premier level college level.

    NIT here we come!

Ute fan here who cheers for all local teams when they aren't playing the U. I hope Collinsworth's knee is ok. He's got a lot of game and it would be a shame if he has a serious injury. Mika's mission will help him mature and channel his emotions. He'll be a load with more maturity. I don't understand why Rose plays Carlino. His shot selection is so bad and he doesn't have the discipline to distribute the ball and play defense when his shot isn't falling. If the Cougs have to depend on Carlino, the year will end very quickly. Good luck in the post season.

    Go Utes !!

  • wer South Jordan, UT
    March 11, 2014 9:41 p.m.

Having not watched the game or read any more details that the heading, I wonder if I can accurately describe what happened...
-Due to the emotional and physical drain from the OT game, BYU was a step (or two) slow on defense and couldn't get any rhythm on offense.
-The Cougs continued to clank 3 point attempts (they had 2-3 in the previous two games. Actually, they broke a 755 game steak by making none against LMU- one of the lowest rated teams in the nation)
-The Zag brain trust, realizing that Collingsworth was playing great and Haws was struggling, doubled teamed Collingsworth whenever they could and used token defense on Haws who continued to shoot in the 20 percentile.
-Finally, somebody(s) got hurt and/or had foul trouble.

I will admit that I felt two weeks ago that if BYU didn't win the WCC tourney, they were NIT bound. I really think now they will get an invite to the Big Dance unless some of the other bubble teams create problems.

The difference between team play and one on one. BYU had more exciting one on one plays but Gonzaga had better passing and shot selections even though they can't shoot free throws.

Disappointing. Not surprising, but disappointing. BYU hasn't been shooting great all weekend in Vegas, and it caught up with them tonight. However, I'm still pleased with my team. They fell behind, but didn't stop fighting and made a game of it.

Gonzaga at times put on a passing clinic tonight. They showed us why they keep winning conference titles. It irritates me to know end to watch teams try and dribble the ball against a zone. How do you beat a zone? Pass, pass, pass, till you find the open man. Which is just what Gonzaga did.

Some posters need to stop criticizing Haws. He is not throwing up "wild shots". Watch him play. He's square to the basket nearly every time and rarely takes a bad shot.

Finally, let's all hope Collinsworth's knee isn't too bad and he can still play this year.

  • idablu Idaho Falls, ID
    March 11, 2014 10:00 p.m.

Collinsworth goes down and our best scorers can't hit the broad side of a barn.
Gonzaga left the door wide open for a BYU comeback and no one could step up offensively except maybe Barkley who was a bit of a spark.
Remind me why Worthington or Halford should ever get in the game? Both huge liabilities.
And what is up with this half court offense of BYU's? Just dribble around the perimeter and hand off tor the next guy to dribble around the perimeter? Seriously, it looks like 3rd grade basketball. BYU should take a lesson from Gonzaga on how to run a half court offense, spacing, and how to PASS the ball.

  • David Centerville, UT
    March 11, 2014 10:10 p.m.

Gonzaga was more rested. BYU had a tough fight late last night. They were obviously tired, and had to play a tough Gonzaga team. Statistically, most people recognize it is tough to win back-to-back, especially after an overtime game that BYU won last night.

I acknowledge, however, that this was not BYUs best year for basketball, though they are pretty good.

    Ute fans...onward and upward? LOL

This BYU team has a lot of issues, and there isn't enough time to even open that can of worms. But as a Y fan who cheers for Utah bball as well, I'm worried about the fact that away from the HC Utah is not a good team. If that doesn't change in the P12 tourney than Utah may be struggling to even get into the NIT.

    Sweater:
The selection committee doesn't care about sagarin. RPI is what they look at and Utah leaves a lot to be desired, with a 79 ranking (BYU is 32) & a SOS ranking of 117 (BYU is 39). BYU is 8-6 against top 100, while Utah is 7-9. Those numbers don't favor the utes unfortunately.

Collingsworth can greatly improve his game if in the off-season he goes to the local LDS church from 6AM to 8AM and practices nothing but foul shooting. I'm sure he feels bad about his foul shooting but here is an opportunity to improve.

Boy...Haws needs to be benched and allowed to be the 7th man in the opening game. We cant afford to have his kind of production hurt this team. It's not that he is shooting 40% over the last 30 days...it's not that he averages 2 total rebounds and 1 assist during that time either...or the turnovers too! It's the fact the 2 shortest guys who play get more rebounds than he does and more assists in way less minutes. He is not being a team player and whether or not it is said publicly...you know it's in the back of the rest of the teams minds that hey, this guy is selfish! Bring him off the bench for a possible spark because lord knows this guy doesn't need to take minutes away from players who are more productive. It will also be a wake up call to him and possibly he will get the message and decide he needs to play team ball if he wants to play.

Wow, a lot of Ute fans with nothing better to do than light up the BYU comment board. A few days ago, Uties were saying BYU wouldn't make it to the Championship game.

Zags are one of the premiere basketball teams in the nation. There is no shame in losing to them. However, if BYU had played one of their average games, this would have been a nail biter.

But BYU played awful tonight. Not sure if it was exhaustion or just an off night. Turnovers, free throw shooting and FG percentage killed them. And I have never complained about refs on this board, but there were 4 or 5 calls that were terrible.

I think BYU will go dancing, but U are right, it is a week of not knowing for sure if BYU will go to NCAA or NIT. However, Utah will sit in wonderment the rest of the week wondering if U will get an NIT or CIT invite. At least there is a chance we go to the NCAA.

Congrats to the Zags on another WCC championship. It is pretty simple why BYU cannot get over the hump in the WCC. Fundamental basketball. This league isn't athletic, it rely's on the fundamentals and that is taught better at most of the WCC schools. Coach Rose's teams are not fundamentally sound. BYU has some great players and with the right coaching would do much better. BYU is inconsistent on D and erratic on offense. Teach solid defense and work the ball on offense, it's that simple.

  • EPoint Roy, UT
    March 12, 2014 6:11 a.m.

The final game was less than 24 hours after the semi for the BYU team, having finished in overtime at midnight, then 19 hours later playing in the final, hardly normal for a college team.

Still a Cougar fan, I like their chances, rested, for a first round win in either NCAA or NIT tournament, with or without Collingsworth, (whose free throw shooting is a liability). The Cougars came out flat against Gonzaga, they will be much sharper next game.

Advice: Matt, get a haircut, Kyle, a shave. I see honor code grooming standard violations, which may lead to sloppy play, missed shots. Gonzaga team dressed and looked sharp, rested, and played sharp, deserved to win. Cougars looked disheveled, tired, out of sinc.

Congrats to Tyler for 25 consecutive made free throws in last 2 games. But where was the shooting touch with the ball in play? Gone gone gone.

All of the comments complaining about Haws being selfish, not a rebounder, and not an assist man indicate poor understanding of BYU's game. The offense goes through Haws...most of the plays are designed to get him free off a screen so he can shoot. When others are passing you the ball so you can shoot, you will have few assists. When you are shooting, 15-25 feet from the basket, you will get few rebounds. Sure, he's had a few off nights shooting, but when we have a good win, he is always the main offensive contributor. As a fan, I wish he was more on his game the last two nights, but off nights happen, despite great efforts. I'm very glad we have Tyler...he's a fine player and a good man.

I sure see a lot of ute fans complaining about BYU fans posting on Utah articles, some of whom are posting on this BYU article and making fun of BYU for losing to Gonzaga. I'm not good with definitions but could someone help me know what hypocrisy means?

BYU was in the title game of the WCC tourney. How about Utah wait until they see how they do in their tourney before they talk here because Utah won't make it past the 2nd round, It will be a struggle to get out of the first round.

Very likely Utah is one and done in the PAC 12 tourney just like Ute fans claim BYU will be one and done in the NCAA tourney. I'll take BYU's situation over Utah's situation any day. Of course, I'd rather have ASU's situation, which (like the onti) is as great as them all.

I may be an anomaly amongst Ute fans, but I think it is good when BYU wins when they're not playing the Utes. It helps both programs when rivals are successful. That tends to make our head to head matchups more meaningful. That being said I listened to the first half with interest hoping BYU would be able to come out of their slump, but they just couldn't do it. I don't know if they just didn't get enough sleep after the late night, but they just weren't on their game. It was tough to listen to. Defense wasn't the only problem and Gonzaga wasn't doing anything spectacularly on defense either. BYU was missing open shots. Gonzaga was also really hot offensively. They were making tough shots and put BYU in too big of a hole to climb out of.

BYU will be in the NCAA tournament, but this will probably hurt their seeding.

There is at least 2 people open lol. Thus the assists would go up higher than 1 a game. Also your point doesn't explain 1 def rebound a game. Every quality player at any level realizes when your shot isn't falling, you find other ways to make things happen. Playing defense would create turnovers, fast breaks, get others involved and could re-spark your offensive game. Bench him..he will get the message

It's always good to see schools from Utah make the tournament. That being said they were pretty awful last night. Seems like people are split over Haw's play kinda like they used to be with Jimmer. He might be the focal point for their offense but even Kobe and Lebron can do more than just shoot. It definitley wouldn't hurt him to up his game in other area's. Good luck to the Cougar's and Utes! A couple of thoughts:

    1. The Bulldogs actually were playing very good defense. At least in the first half. BYU was struggling to get open looks because as soon as they touched the ball, the Zags were up in their grill. I'd like to see more of that kind of defensive play from the Cougars. I do not like their zone and desperation arm waves at a guy who is elevated for a wide open 3 point shot. No adjustment are made except trying to get over faster, which they don't ever really do.

    2. I guess this year's team was a good team. Not great, but good. Another 20 win season, a possible bit to the NCAA tournament. All good accomplishments. But it would be nice to see them consistently win the big games. Instead of disappearing when the real pressure is on, it would be nice to see them come prepared to match and exceed the pressure. Instead, as of late, I go away disappointed from the big games. We need a couple of players who thrive on the pressure rather than instead of shrinking in the face of it.

Ah, BYU Cougars. You didn't do it again. I'm as true blue as they come, but after this game with the Zags, I'm really blue. No shame here, BYU was beaten by a better team and better coaches. This time they can't say that the refs beat them. BYU had many more free throws than Gonzaga. I wonder how they would have done in the WAC? Well, I'll hold my breath hoping for an invitation from somewhere to play post-season bb.
One suggestion to brother H: practice with real people guarding him rather than chairs posted on the basketball floor. Two or three might do it.

Disappointing game, although I turned it off in the first half and was somewhat pleased to turn it back on later and find that BYU was only down by ten and that Gonzaga wasn't actually going to put up a buck-fifty. Collinsworth's going down hurts a lot, obviously--I sure hope his knee injury isn't career-ending like his older brother's was! I'm a little ambivalent about the NCAAs--on balance, I want the Cougs to get in (and I think they will), but they sure won't beat anyone playing like they did in the last three games.

Gonzaga did just enough to win. They tried to give the game away in the end, but got a good W none the less. I thought the officiating was pretty good; at least the fouls called were fairly even. Carlino hurt BYU. He kept missing threes, yet kep shooting them. I hope Collinsworth is all right. I hope Gonzaga plays more like the did in the first half then the second. Usually the Zags have a lot of hype and lose. This team is flying under the radar. Good luck to BYU in the NCAAs.

    Go Gonzaga!

I find it quite sad that so many spend so much time on sports. Here's a novel idea, get out and do something to help someone, perform some service, give sports a rest for a while. I bet your entire life will be better for it.

    Scouting report on the Cougars.

Only play 3 or 4 guys on offense (don't have to guard Sharp, Austin or Worthington) so can double or triple Haws.

Will stay in their zone even if you overload on side of the floor so you can play 5 on 4 and get easy open shots with good spacing.

He must have posted that as part of his time spent doing "service" for others..lol

Cheer up cougar fans! At least you can tune in and watch the best team in the state of Utah make another run in the PAC-12 tournament. They already took down Washington in a #8 vs #9 seed match up. Now Utah will play the #1 seed Arizona and its going to be a thriller!

    Go Utes!

I'm sure there's some poll or rating service that has BYU better than Gonzaga.

The Y did what they needed to do in this tournament to get a bid. If there are enough upsets in other conference tournaments they may get bumped by not likely. Realistically, they will be a double digit seed and have a difficult first round game.

No bashing from my end but thought two comments were really funny. First claiming Gonzaga would be the best team in the PAC 12 - guess Worf forgot about U of A and UCLA. Even better were the comments that the team was forced to play two games in less than 24 hours. Zags played the day before as well and only had a couple of hours more rest. I guess when you can't blame the officials, you need another excuse. Bottom line was the best team in the WCC won both the regular season and tournament.

    CO Ute:
I agree, the best team in the WCC did end up winning. But I think you might be surprised by how tough gonzaga would be on UCLA. UCLA can be pretty awful at times and lack consistency. Arizona is the best team in the PAC12 but have also shown weaknesses that will be exploited in the NCAA tournament. The Wildcats are not a top team IMHO and are over-rated, but we'll see they have a chance to prove me wrong.

    Everyone else:
Who cares what conference you play in? Winning is all that matters. BYU had very good games against quality opponents this year and a high SOS. Utah had good wins in the PAC12 and is a gutty athletic team especially on the defensive side of the floor. But who cares what conference they're in, especially in bball with respective SOS for both programs. I cheer for both, and couldn't care less what patch they wear on their jersey. Remember Memphis...final four, national champions, in the what? CUSA? And Wichita state is in what league? WHO CARES? Are U a quality bball team or not? That's the only question that matters.
