Wait, Chris B. Before BYU played LMU, you said that it was 50/50 because they
both had beat each other during conference play. What the experts said about
each team didn't seem to matter. Going back 3 years to see how they played
against each other didn't matter. Coach Rose being the better coach
didn't matter. Now that BYU is playing Gonzaga, who also split
the regular season games against each other, it is a sure Gonzaga is going to
win? Even as an often overly optimistic BYU fan, I fear that Gonzaga will win
(although BYU has a fair shot). But you should at least be consistent with your
logic (or often lack thereof) when predicting your favorite team to hate's
Using her tried and true reverse psychology prediction method, my little sister
has guaranteed that BYU will win tonight. Thanks christy!
And yet, BYU's offense is top 5 in the nation. The fact that they won
against LMU without hitting a single 3 says a lot about their ability to put
points on the board. And last night, with sub-par performances from both Haws
and Carlino, still managed to win. BYU, a "slow white team" runs one of
the best fast-break offenses in the country. So, yeah, it's
just you. "Another blow out loss"? The only game that BYU hasn't
been in this season is (and it pains me to say it) the loss to Utah. Gonzaga
pulled away at the end, but BYU was in it until the last few minutes. Every
other loss has been very, very close.
sg"Is it just me?" Yes, it's just you.BYU
is 3rd in the nation in scoring (84.8 ppg) and individually, Haws is 6th (23.4
ppg). It's not uncommon to see BYU move the ball the length of
the court and score within seconds of a made basket by the opposing team.If you'd paid any attention to the mugging Haws was taking
throughout the game, you'd understand why he had an off-night scoring from
the field, yet still managed to put up 24 points.
This is a frustrating and exciting team to watch. Unfortunately Gonzaga is going
to beat us. If we were playing lights out we'd have a good chance but with
poor shooting in this tourney and with a brutal, overtime, late game last night,
I don't like our chances. I don't know what it is about this team, but
every time they get a lead they take their foot off the gas pedal. They
don't seem to have that killer instinct and put teams away. The only good
news is we can't shoot worse from 3. If we do shoot 30-40% from 3 tonight,
I love our chances. I don't think it will happen though. Go cougars!
Regardless of what happens tonight, we're going dancing which is a great
I like Gonzaga in this one, but by the narrowest of margins. Both teams are
playing good ball as of late. Gonzaga needs to hit 3s. The games that they have
lost were mostly due to horrible 3 point shooting. BYU needs to keep there big
men out of foul trouble. Mika needs to keep his composure. Also post up Haws
against the smaller Pangos or Stockton when ever possible. This is a great
matchup and good for the WCC. I wouldn't be suprised in the least bit if
BYU wins. They have already shown that they can beat Gonzga. Both teams belong
in the NCAA tourney; without a doubt. I look forward to it.Go Zags!
All too frequently their go fast offense is translated into "go fast and
reckless". Sometimes they take the most questionable forced shots because
they lack the patience to wait for a good shot. We saw that many times in this
tournament. Half of Haw's shots where not good looks.IF BYU
plays like they did last night, they lose big. I'm hoping that the entire
team shows up and plays a little smarter and get their first WCC tournament
title. Unfortunately....I'm not terribly optimistic.Prediction: GU: 77 BYU: 70I really hope I'm wrong.
Gonzaga is the favorite, and rightfully so. But I do think BYU has a fairly good
chance of pulling off the upset. I think it will be pretty close most of the
way. My official prediction is 80-76 Zags, my best case scenario prediction is
82-74 BYU, and my pessimistic prediction is 82-72 Zags. I don't think it
will be more than a 10 point game either way. Go BYU!
This has all the makings of a great conference championship. Personally, I
thought the Dons were playing the best basketball in the conference the last
month, and we were able to beat them. In the last month, the Zags lost to San
Diego and needed a last minute miracle shot to beat Santa Clara. If the same
Zag team shows up that played Santa Clara, this is a Cougar victory. Here are the keys to the game.Mika and Austin must stay out of
foul trouble. Zags are already better at the 4 and 5 than the Cougs. The
dropoff from Mika and Austin to Worthington and Sharp is significant. Mika and
Austin must be on the floor for 30+ minutes.Karnowski is also prone
to foul trouble. If he gets into foul trouble, it's a huge advantage for
BYU.Carlino is the streakiest player I've seen. When he is
hot, he's red hot. When he's cold, he's a liability. If Carlino
plays like he did against Portland, it's a BYU win. If not, Rose needs to
limit his minutes, which he has been doing. This will be a nail
biter. BYU 72, Zags 68.
Both teams beat the other handily on their home court so it should be a pretty
even match up on a neutral court. Gonzaga fans will be well represented, but so
should BYU fans. After all, its only a 5 hour drive down I-15 from Provo, and
there are also lots of BYU fans who live in and around Las Vegas. Speaking of
Vegas, the Bulldogs are currently listed as 3.5 point favorites but I think that
is mainly due to the fact that they are the perennial favorites in the WCC
tournament, having won it 11 of the last 15 years.
because we have been inconsistent, even in our wins, I have an uneasy feeling
about this game. Perhaps GU can get the Yipes and start slow and give the cougs
a chance to get their second wind after a long hard fought game.Second, if BYU
can hit some 3's, it will loosen up the drive lanes to the basket; if not,
it will be diffuclt to get to the rim and finish. worst case scenario, the
refs take BYU out early with little ticky-tack fouls on the Mika and Austin.
Swallow the whistle for the first couple of minutes and let the game settle in
before you start screwing things up REFS!
Zaga by 10+ in this one. Wish it was different, but our bigs are not as strong
as theirs and if Haws doesn't get open looks, we are in trouble. We should
still get into the dance, but only if we keep it close. Otherwise we could be
back in the NIT.
Bold prediction: BYU is going to win a close one, with Haws and Carlino both
scoring well, and BYU matching or beating Gonzaga's 3 pt shooting.
Collinsworth will continue his steady inside play, and Winder will be good, but
Haws and Carlino will be the difference...
BYU by 17.Hey, it's a guess but if we get real lucky I'd
like to be on record as having predicted it. :) (I have a class and
won't get to see the game)Tired guys from last night, some
bench guys have got to get on the floor and play high quality minutes and low
fouls, but hard for about 8-10 minutes more than normal so the regulars get more
breathing time. BYU gets a bid if they show well, get left out if
they look flat.
Well I do declairLike Samson it was his hairthat allowed Klye
to play Like a beastly bad beargo BYU Lets win the tournament
Gonzaga will be more rested than BYU, look for a big win by Gonzaga. Specially
if BYU comes back to Earth in their free throw shooting. They shot lights out
