The taxpayers are paying for the full expansion whether we get it or not. There
is nothing we gain by rejecting Medicaid expansion. It's not like the
congress is going to apply that extra money to paying down debt or anything. We
pay for the Medicaid expansion. If the governor accepts it then our citizens
benefit from having that. If he rejects it, then we are still paying for
something we don't have.
Our wonderful House President will reject the idea. She doesn't want anyone
poor having health coverage. Instead she would have them use the emergency
rooms at hospitals because that is such a more efficient use of funds.
How about we take ALL the money and spend it ALL on medical care for the working
poor. Herbert wants to get a block grant so he can give some to his campaign
contributors, oh, excuse me, insurance companies.
We cannot afford to provide health care using funds we are already paying for,
but we can spend close to a billion dollars to move the prison.
I've been amazed at hearing the debate on things like this in the house how
there is a fear among our Representatives that the Federal Government would not
pay us. That to me is totally amazing. Don't they realize that the reason
we have a Constitution in the first place was because the Government at the time
under the Article of Confederation could not pay its debts, mostly from the
Revolutionary War. The Constitution gave the government the right and
responsibility to pay our national debt. If we can't have faith in our
Federal Government than we do indeed have a big problem. It think it's more
of a problem though for the person who doesn't believe than it is for the
What Republican legislators are doing on this issue is just shameful. But I have
no doubt they'll all be reelected because, well, they're Republicans.
Our State Legislature and Governor are a farce! We won't expand Medicaid
to allow health care for 110,000 people, but we will jury rig the system to get
grants thus allowing some of the money to be skimmed off to the well heeled
Ins. Industry. People who have life threatening medical issues continue to go
without treatment, but we will spend a billion dollars to move a functioning
prison thus allowing the well heeled real estate developers access to prime
land. We reject passing an election reform bill, thus keeping the State of Utah
one of only four states without election reform. And we pass a bill to censure
any school district that accepts unsanctioned Fed monies, because we are so
paranoid of anything The Fed Govt. does! Arrogant, inept, selfish and heartless,
in my opinion pretty well describes what we have going on up on the hill at this
time. Looks to me like a broad house cleaning is in order, but then again this
is Utah, land of the good ole boys!
The Utah house sounds like it's put a lot more thought into this and has a
much broader understanding of the subject than people who've commented on
this so far.
Dear Utah House Speaker,To meet your concept of "personal
responsibility", how would you like the poor to proceed? Is malnutrition
and sickness enough? How about homelessness and mental illness? Shall we move
our unsightliness to the edge of the Great Salt Lake? Is working three jobs
every day of the week and never seeing our families again in perpetuity
sufficient? Should we turn to faith healers to cure our cancer? Or should we
just quietly bury ourselves alive in the landfill?Decisions with
your name on it that cost lives.
Re: JamescmeyerYou are probably right! "The Utah house sounds like
it's put a lot more thought into this" problem is they are thinking
alot more of themselves and their contributors and less of those they espouse to
represent! 110,000 men, women and worse yet children go to bed each night as
sick or sicker because of lack of critical medical help. Help that is
available, Help that has been paid for by we the people, available by a simple
stroke of the pen, and yet the Governor and Legislature continue to talk out
both sides of their mouths in an effort to skirt the issue! we are a State that
touts family values, volunteerism and compassion, add hypocrisy to that list!
My question to the Gov. and Legislators, how do you look your family in the eye
knowing that they are taken care of but 110,000, a lot of who are children, are
going to bed sick, or are a day closer to dying? How do you sleep at night? I
agree there may be some of the 110,00 who will abuse the system, but
shouldn't we ere on the side of decency and compassion?
