Absurd bill. If you currently have a 3.5 GPA you can telepathically learn and
participate in what is happening in the classroom? No. There's more to
gain from being present in the classroom than a grade can even represent.
I can see the result now. . . . I'm smart, so I don't have to go to
work? Part of school attendance is teaching the students not only their
academics, but what to expect in the work world when they reach adulthood.
If kids are getting 3.5s and above while missing enough school to be considered
criminals, shouldn't this be an indictment of both our public education and
criminal systems? There shouldn't be a truancy law in the first place but
if our legislature insists on one, why not an exemption for those who seem to be
getting educated anyway. If anything, maybe it adds an incentive to get good
You can bet that teachers will have to allow the students to make up whatever
work they miss with no penalty. This is could set the record for the dumbest
education bill the Utah State Legislature has ever passed, and that is not any
easy thing to do.
So if you get good grades, you can come and go as you please? More
to the point, I'm curious about just how many A- students have been cited
for truancy and brought into court? Is this bill tailored to the needs of the
child of someone with political influence, or do we have hundreds of students
with that 3.5 GPA getting caught ditching class? This sounds like yet another
solution in search of a problem.
Wow between this bill and the one that says homeschoolers are not accountable to
anybody, the legislature has hit a new low.
