Considering how much better this team is than people expected, there is no
reason we can't win the tournament. As far as our terrible road
record - we haven't been getting killed on the road and in the tournament
its a road game for the other team as well.Utah can't win the
Pac 12 tournament. Just like we couldn't hang with Arizona(barely lost),
just like we couldn't beat byu(total annihilation), just like we
couldn't beat UCLA, just like we couldn't finish above 12th in the Pac
12 this year.I'm considering going to the tournament to watch
the Utes win the Pac 12 tournament and go dancing. Are U?
Slightly different with roscoe's comments about winning national titles.Coach K has got this team into contention for what he plans on doing
BEFORE he started talking. And Utah actually does have a very
realistic chance at winning the Pac 12 tournament, just as several other teams
do as well. We already made the semi finals last year, and
we're better this year. So yes, its very realistic. byu
isn't any closer to a national title now than the day bronco made his
comments almost a decade ago.Big difference.Go Utes.>---->
It'd be nice if the comment board braggadocio understood this concept.
Coach K didn't "promise" or "predict" anything regarding
the conference tournament, only that he PLANS on winning it. Planning for
anything less than success in any season, game, or even possession of a game, is
not something I imagine any coach of a major program does. The thing I
appreciate about this coaching staff is that they do their part in planning
successfully, and more often than not, when they don't succeed (especially
this season) it has been because of mistakes late in the game by the players,
which can be fixed. Hoping for another run in Vegas this year, but hopefully
with a chance in one more game than last year.
Now it's ok because Utah took a page out of BYU's play book, the same
play book that ute fans mock BYU for. Now that Utah is doing it, it's ok
somehow. Quest for perfection=win PAC 12 tourney. Neither one happened and Utah
isn't going to win the PAC 12 tourney.
CougarSunDevil, It's ok because Krystko's aspirations are
Coach K speaks with confidence on winning the PAC12 tournament, because his team
has shown they can play against the competition. When they've lost, the
games have been very close. To contend for the National title, one
has to compete against top teams, which Coach M teams haven't done.
EkuteOf course a ute fan would say its realistic for their team to
win out but their rival won't. I however recognize that neither is going to
happen. Utah has to go through Arizona, UCLA, Arizona State, et al and on the
road no less. Impossible? No. Extremely unlikely? Yes. Utah isn't going to
win the PAC 12 tourney this year. Baby steps ute fans. Work on being competitive
on the road, then worry about bigger things. Just like BYU needs to worry about
winning bowl games and working on winning against decent competition before they
need to worry about a perfect season, although 2014 might have a higher
probability than past seasons, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
ekute,Bronco never said he was going to win the national
championship in the year he said it was a goal. What is wrong with striving to
be the best at some point? Coach K has expectations of winning the tournament
this year. That is a big difference. I am a big Cougar fan, but I hope the
Utes do win the tournament, whereas most Ute fans on this board hope that not
only does BYU not win a national championship ever, they hope they never win a
game. We have become a nation of haters, and sports is an unfortunate prime
@ekuteNo they aren't.
Mendenhall, bless his heart, starts yapping it up before the season begins and
then throws in inane slogans to drive home the point. Then Holmoe does his
media dog and pony show in an effort to get fans to cougar stadium to watch
games against teams no one cares about. Mendenhall somehow appeals to the
strange alternate reality in which byu fans live. Here's the
difference...Coach K looks at the next challenge and says: "yeah, based on
great wins this season and the eight near misses in conference play, we are in
the thick of the Pac-12 conference and have a legitimate shot at the
tournament." As the article correctly points out..."There’s no
talk of a Sweet 16 appearance this year, not even from the Ute coach, who has
raised eyebrows for saying his team can claim the conference’s automatic
invitation to the NCAA tournament."That's the difference.
I'm not sure why Mendenhall is included in the discussion about the Pac-12
tournament. They are on completely different worlds and 'ne'r the
twain shall meet.'
Brad, I love ya, but don't ever compare Larry K to Bronco Mendenhall again.
CougarSunDevilPhoenix, AZ"Just like BYU needs to worry

before they need to worry about a perfect season, although 2014 might have a
higher probability than past seasons, but I wouldn't hold my
breath."Is that because you think byu is one of the best teams
in the country or are you acknowledging the incredibly weak (2011'esq)
schedule that Holmoe and ESPN have lined up?
My Perspective"Is that because you think byu is one of the best
teams in the country or are you acknowledging the incredibly weak
(2011'esq) schedule that Holmoe and ESPN have lined up?"It's a weaker schedule. I'd compare this schedule to Utah's
2008 football schedule. A couple of headliner games and then several games with
lower level competition.
Seems to me that Coach Krystkowiak's and Coach Mendenhall's comments
are like apples and oranges -- the context for each was completely different.
The comparison seems very strained. I don't understand why some in the
Salt Lake media seem continually to look for reasons to compare various aspects
of Utah athletics with BYU athletics.
"Utah took a page out of BYU's play book"CSD:Really? Were there red slogan "Quest for Pac-12" t-shirts for sale
before the season, and I missed them?
Nothing more amusing than utah "fan" hypocrisy lol. And nothing more
predictable either. LOL!
Brave Sir RobinSan Diego, CA"Brad, I love ya, but
don't ever compare Larry K to Bronco Mendenhall again. Ever."AMEN to that!!!!
I understand trying to attract readers from all bases but this was one of the
weirdest mashup articles I've ever read.
MyPerspective. It is not an incredibly weak schedule. It isn't
as tough as last year, but playing Texas, Utah State, Boise State and Central
Florida is not playing against creampuffs - all possible top 25 teams. The home
schedule is not very good, but some years are always going to be better than
others. Maybe if your perspective weren't so slanted, you could look at
the schedules before and after, as well as this year, and realize that Tom
Holmoe is doing a pretty good job, given the difficulties in scheduling, to
schedule some pretty good matchups. But you would be giving the school you love
to hate a tiny bit of credit, and that would be asking a lot of you.
Bronco has never been competitive at the highest championship level of college
football... his expectations are therefore unreasonable.Coach K has
been competitive in the PAC12... his expectations are therefore reasonable.Rock loves BYU... so it makes sense that he would try to justify
Bronco's unreasonable expectation by comparing it to the reasonable
expectation of Coach K.
Rock, Please do not ever compare Coach K with Roscoe again. There
are no similarities. Thank you.
@ JohnInSLC"Really? Were there red slogan "Quest for
Pac-12" t-shirts for sale before the season, and I missed them?"Utah doesn't need t-shirt slogans to quest for anything. They just
go out and do it on the field/court. BYU is notorious for printing silly t-shirt
slogans. Remember 2008? BYU quested for perfection, while Utah ended up being
Coach K's statementis okay, because you have no business playing any game
you don't believe you can win. Otherwise you a doomed to fail. That is
all he said is he believes they can win. Whether they will or not depends on
the players, but a positive attitude from the Coach can go a long way.
CougarSunDevil:"I'd compare this schedule to Utah's
2008 football schedule."Really? You see 3 or 4 teams on that
schedule that'll finish in the Top-25?I don't.
It's a wide stretch to compare a coach who thinks they have a shot at
playing for, and winning, a "conference" championship, from another who
thinks they have a shot at playing for, and winning, a "national"
championship. And especially considering...(1) Utah WILL be playing
in a tournament to consider the "conference" championship. Those dates
down there in Las Vegas had already been set.(2) Football does NOT
have the same sort of "tournament" style where you win or go home like
Basketball. In Basketball, if you win your conference, you're in. If you
don't, you have to hope for an at-large bid. But in Football, if you win
your conference, that doesn't mean you're in. And it isn't as if
the cougars have a shot at winning their conference in football, since no
conference wanted them. Plus, their weak SOS pretty much guarantees if they go
12-0, they'll still play in some 3rd-tier bowl game. They won't
finish in the Top-4. The cougars have already been eliminated for NC
contention, and the season hadn't even started yet.
"Utah doesn't need t-shirt slogans to quest for anything."Pac12:Yeah, I know. That's the point I was trying to
make--sorry if it was a little too subtle.
Coach K has elevated the level of play at the HC back to former highs. Brother
Mendenhall has done...? for LES? Ensured a home schedule which features Utah
State as your most formidable opponent at home? Yikes.
You see 3 or 4 teams on that schedule that'll finish in the Top-25?Texas, UCF, and Houston. All did very well in their bowl games and could
likely be preseason top 25. Of course navel vet won't admit
that, nor any other ute fan. You wouldn't admit in a million years that
2008 happened because you were in the mountain west, and had you been in the
PAC, it would never have happened.
CougarSunDevil:UCF? Houston? The Knights just lost their QB, and
the Cougars just got hammered in their bowl game. And that's not to
mention the fact that they finished 8-5 despite playing a weak AAC schedule.Nope. You don't have 3-4 Top-25 teams on that schedule, and
neither have you a couple of Top-10 either. There is absolutely no
"legitimate" comparison between your weak SOS 2014 schedule, and
Utah's 2008 schedule, that CBSSports rated one spot ahead of
Alabama's. So don't talk to me about what I "wouldn't admit
in a million years" after that made up clap-trap about comparing our two
schedules. Very dubious indeed.
Naval Vet,"Nope. You don't have 3-4 Top-25 teams on that
schedule"Thanks for proving my point. I love Utah fans because
you like to skirt the real topic. Using "CBSSports rating as one spot ahead
of Alabama's" justifying the 2008 schedule with rating services yet not
acknowledging the same or similar rating services that rank BYU basketball ahead
of Utah basketball. Of course, your going to find whatever criteria you can to
prove your condition is better, throwing out all consistency. But if
you really are a Naval Vet, thanks for your service.
CougarSunDevil: "...yet not acknowledging the same or similar
rating services that rank BYU basketball ahead of Utah basketball."Why would I acknowledge that? Our Basketball schedules have nothing to do with
your frantic and emotionally inspired fantasy your 2014 schedule coming anywhere
NEAR Utah's vastly more challenging 2008 slate, which IS what we were
talking about. That's just a red herring that you deployed in order to
avoid admitting that you were wrong. Red herrings don't work on me.
@ CougarSunDevil"Of course navel vet won't admit that, nor
any other ute fan. You wouldn't admit in a million years that 2008 happened
because you were in the mountain west, and had you been in the PAC, it would
never have happened"Same can be said about BYU. Cougar fans will
never admit in a million years that 1984 happened because they were in the WAC.
If BYU played in the PAC-12 or Big 12 or any other power conference, 1984 would
never have happened.
byu basketball wouldn't be sniffing the bubble if they were in the PAC 12
Bleed Crimson"Same can be said about BYU. Cougar fans will never
admit in a million years that 1984 happened because they were in the WAC. If BYU
played in the PAC-12 or Big 12 or any other power conference, 1984 would never
have happened."I guess you never asked me. Naval
Vet"That's just a red herring that you deployed in order to
avoid admitting that you were wrong." Sorry, not a red herring.
The topic I was discussing was whether a team is really as good as the fans say
they are or as the ratings say they are. Sorry you got confused.
CougarSunDevil:"Sorry, not a red herring. The topic I was
discussing was whether a team is really as good as the fans say they
are..."How is, "I'd compare this schedule to
Utah's 2008 football schedule," anything at all related to how Utah
fans feel about how good their team is? That quote isn't about whether a
team is as good as their fans say. That's a quote about how the
cougars' future schedule ranks even-Steven to Utah's 2008 season where
the Utes faced -- and beat 4 teams who finished the season ranked in the Top-25
(and 2 of whom finished in the Top-10). You're now just trying to change
the argument in order to avoid admitting you were wrong, but you can't.
It's all right there in black and white, and with your name all over it.
