Amazing that Howard Stephenson, an active opponent of public education, and who
chairs the Senate Education Committee, would want even more power in the hands
of the Senate to govern public education.
In my state we trust the people to elect the state Superintendent of Education.
This is just the continuing effort by the Republican legislature to defy the
will of the people on vouchers. Why keep voting for people that only care about
lining their pockets with taxpayer money?
Be careful what you wish for, mcclark. Wisconsin is the birthplace of school
vouchers. They suck needed money out of the public schools and consistently
under-perform. That's because, over time, private interests have taken
over so-called education reform. Vouchers are supposed to help the poor and
struggling students, but studies show that two thirds of the recent voucher
expansion went to kids who were already enrolled in private schools. So
it's not giving parents options, it's political payback. The most
recent debacle involved a private school that ran out of money and fled the
state, leaving the public school to pick up the pieces, without the funds. That
private entity headed to Florida, where they are starting all over again. If
you want to learn more, search on the consequences of unregulated private
Charters in Pennsylvania, spending twice the amount of public schools and
fighting all the way to the state supreme court to hide how much the founders
skim off, compared to how much they spend in the classroom. Public education is
a public good; a duty towards today's children that protects the future.
Until Howard Stevenson is voted out of office, education in the state of Utah
will neither be safe or progress. He is using the legislature to line the
pockets of his family. Any education bill he is in favor of must be bad. His
ultimate goal is to privatize education so he can increase his own wealth. He
also wants to ensure that only the wealthy gain a quality education.People
please learn the facts about education and your legislature. Please learn what
businesses they and their families are involved in, so you can understand their
motivations. Better yet stop voting in businessmen who seek only to line their
and their colleagues pockets. Vote in educators, policeman, workers, housewives
and dads etc.
The BOE needs to be abolished......turn the education of our children back to
the parents....this idea that our children are a part of Bill Clinton's
Village is just ludicrou
Howard Stephenson supports this resolution. Therefore, I will vote be
campaigning and voting against the resolution should it make it onto the ballot.
Midwest Mom--- Here in Utah we had a law passed by the legislature that
authorized school vouchers. We then had a citizen referendum that by a large
margin overturned that law. Ever since the Republican legislature, that includes
people who build and operate private schools, has been trying to find a way
around this. That is what I was referring to.
The legislature does not trust the State Board of Education and they are upset
with the process used by the Board to select the current superintendent, Martell
Menlove. This amendment is not intended to improve education in the state,
rather its purpose is to show the State Board who is the boss.
Amen to most of what has already been said. This is nothing but a
blatant attempt by the legislature to grab power and control over the statewide
education system so that they can put vouchers into place without having to face
the citizens of Utah. They already tried that one and lost big time. But, of course, politicians never really lose, they just find another way to
get what they want.
