The only accurate portion of this review is its closing paragraph, in which it
notes that this so-called production is guaranteed to bring in lots of cash.
Indeed, a gullible public will not be able to empty it's wallet fast
enough.Let us not mince words. The musical makes a travesty of
everything that the novel stood for. The musical makes outright evil seem like
an entertaining farce, while making abject poverty seem like a mere annoyance.
It even goes so far as to trivialize sexual violence. Worst of all, the musical
ignores the true nature of the major characters of the novel. Is
anyone really surprised at the failure this production turned out to be? Taking
a great work of literature and turning it into a dumbed down musical farce in
order to fleece the general public is doomed to be a disaster from the start.
I'm sure the lead actors are pretty good (vocally) otherwise they would
have chosen others from the large number of talent that came to the auditions.
However couldn't they find some actors who were at least close to the age
of the characters they were portraying? What they were missing were clearly
associated to their lack of age and experience. I'm thinking this is
another High School Edition considering the youthfulness of the leads and their
performances. I'm sure the reviewer would have been more direct if they
weren't afraid of the "loyal" followers of Hale.
I think that they apparently mis-cast in this case, if the reviewer is correct.
He only reviewed one cast but not the other. But then I'm assuming things.
Joseph Paur or J D'Paur in some movies would have been the
perfect Valjean. He's the right age and has the vocal chops to do it
right. Plus physically, he's the Valjean type. He's a pretty
imposing dude. If he didn't try out, he should have. If he did try out
then shame on Hale Center for not casting him.
Sorry I am late to the party in posting here. I just read this review. I was
able to see this T/Th/S production before I ever read this review and
accompanying responses. I loved this production so much I am going to see it
again. I thought the singing was magnificent and the whole production marvelous.
I'm not a paid critic of the theater, however, I am a season ticket holder
and regular attendee of Hale Centre Theatre and wanted to add my voice to this
review!Thank you for such a grand performance of Les Miserables!
