This is a great regional matchup. Looking forward to it... Go Cougs!
As usual, the first game is away from LES.
"This football series with Brigham Young University renews one of our oldest
and most interesting rivalries,” Arizona State Vice President for
University Athletics Ray Anderson said in a press release.Interesting that ASU athletics feel that BYU is a rival even though we
haven't played them in over a decade, while some trolls up on the hill
claim to have moved on and no longer consider BYU rivals even though we've
played the Utes every year for nearly a century. Maybe it's because ASU
isn't in the prestigious PAC1... oh wait, that's not it.
Looking forward to two cougar wins! (and lots of U fans trolling this post haha)
Great news! But still too far away ahead to be too excited about. Besides, it
can't be too palatable for Chris B and others like him who don't think
a mid major like BYU deserves a home-and-home with any member of the powerful
and prestigious PAC 12! Anyhow, someone wake me up when 2020 arrives! Such a
@Wer - I noticed the same. It seems like in every single one of these home and
homes, byu always plays away the first game. Clearly ASU had more power in this
negotiation. A home and home with ASU a big deal? Just routine for
Looking desperate to be in the Pac-12.
Why does byu never have the first game at LES in these home and home
negotiations? Byu fans will dismiss it as no big deal, but its a clear sign of
who has the power each and every time byu negotiates with a power conference
team. And its not byu.
@bigsamoan,Your excitement over a home and home with a power
conference team says a lot!
Hmmm? This has me really puzzled. Chris, were is the two for one? I thought
we shouldn't be able to schedule any one for ones with the power five
conferences. Or where is the second home game for ASU at University of Phoenix
stadium? I guess some universities see enough value in us to schedule one and
ones. I will be at both U of A games and the ASU game when they play in AZ.
Looks like ASU just scheduled two easy wins
The number of Utes who need to follow and comment on every coaching, recruiting,
and scheduling announcement from Provo is a direct correlation to the fortunes
of Utah football. Pessimism for their program demands they find any excuse for
schadenfreude in BYU's.
@Wer and Ken, What is the big deal over where the first game is
played? As long as the games take place I could care less about who has the
home game first. Besides, with the first game in Tempe that is better for me
:)@Hadley, I guess you overlooked the bigsamoan saying
it is too far away to be too excited about. All you trolls need to
Re: Mesa CougHaven't you been paying attention? Utah is better
than BYU because they are in the PAC12. ASU is also in the PAC12 which explains
why the first game is in AZ. Having the first game as a home game is the same
thing as a 2 for 1. Now do you understand?
@Mesa - I've never said byu could never get a home and home with any power
conference team. But congrats, we have those year after year with teams like
Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, USC, and yes ASU. You must be so proud you have a small
small taste of what life in the Prestigious Pac 12 is like!If byu
fans are bragging this much about a home and home with ASU, just further
justification for how Utah fans feel and talk about our Pac 12 membership!
@Mesa,The only big deal of where the first game is played is its a
telling sign of which program is higher and which program is lower on the power
scale. Sure, you may not care a lot, but it is interesting every time byu comes
out with an announcement about a new arrangement, the first game always is away.
All of these other teams seem to care, so I believe there truly are
reasons. If there weren't, byu would get the first game at home half the
time right? If it didn't matter, why doesn't byu get some at home
first? You're the one who says its no big deal - so why are
none of the first games at byu?
@wer"As usual, the first game is away from LES."Huh? What does that matter? You guys are really struggling to find something
to make an issue out of if that is the best thing you can come up with. You have
to look at the schedule as a whole to know why one is at home or on the road in
any particular year.In 2020 BYU already has Virginia and Arizona at
home. This gives them ASU and Stanford on the road. That's a good
balance. In 2021 they'll have ASU at home and USC on the road,
once again a good balance. Really you, and ken, are coming across
looking very desperate.
Congratulations, byu!"This football series with Brigham Young
University renews one of our oldest and most interesting rivalries...” What?"...it fulfills a need for us to schedule home/home
series with institutions that are located in the Western portion of the United
States.”Oh, now I understand they needed a series with any
Western institution. byu filled the need before Utah St could get there. Holmoe's quest to be a de facto member of the Pac-12 continues
unabated. Tell me again when is this series will be played?
Gotta love the Trolls' spinChris B posted ad nauseum about BYU
can only get 2 for 1's. That got blown out of the water. His attempt to
misdirect the topic fails big time.Ken's attempt to minimize
the 1 for 1 with ASU is silly; it is a 1 for 1, got it?Crow, When is
the last time the Utes beat ASU? Playing Utah for most PAC schools is an
automatic win. Judging from recent history, there is a good chance that BYU
will get a win over ASU before Utah will.Great 1 and 1 for BYU.
Glad to have the old and interesting rivalry back! Good job Tom
Great recruiting game for 7th graders! Again a good September home game;
however, I guess the November game schedule will be similar to the past years of
Isn't it interesting that byu fans have to answer to as to why all of these
arragnements all are away first. If its no big deal, why not just
answer why they are all away first?Just pure coincidence?
Its crazy how much of a stretch anti-byu haters have to use to put anything byu
down. Personally I think this is great and I love getting schedule
updates every once in a while. Its like a random present to every byu fan
throughout the year!! go cougs, beat pacific tonight!!
Congrats Cougs for the pickup! ASU is a solid team and look forward to playing
them. Who knows how different the teams will be when we play each other in 2020.
In other news, how bout Jimmer Fredette's game against the Knicks?
It's been a few years since I said someone got Jimmered so I am happy to
say that the Knicks just got Jimmered! Is it a sign of things to come? I
don't know, but definitely Jimmer belongs in the NBA even if it's a
minimal role. Check out the highlights it was pretty impressive.
"Glad to have the old and interesting rivalry back!"Nasty:Well, at least back for once in your lifetime, if you can
wait that long.
ASU isn't all that good an unranked Texas Tech team with a freshman QB
dismantled them in their bowl game
It's so embarrassing to read the posts of my fellow Utah fans.Where the first game is played mean absolutely nothing and is not an
indication of who has more power in the negotiations. It's determined
simply by what games are already scheduled for each team. To make a home and
home work it is sometimes necessary to schedule them two or three years apart..
due to the schedules of both teams. You're all showing your lack
of sports knowledge if you don't understand how these schedules are
Being a UofA as well as a BYU fan, I look forward to ASU's defeat with
particular delight! :)
Oh man! I find myself in a paradox. At least no matter what, I can say my team
will win! On the glass half empty side, I will have to admit that my team will
also lose. Should be fun though!
I think that WER and Ken both bring up an excellent point. Having the front end
of a one-and-one clearly indicates which team is in control of the rivalry. And
don't worry Ken and WER, I saved you the trouble and looked it up. Since 1975 BYU and Utah have played exactly 19 one-and-ones. The first
game of those series was at Cougar stadium 13 times, at LaVell Edwards stadium 6
times, at Rice Stadium 0 times, and at Rice-Eccles Stadium 0 times. I guess we
no longer have to wonder who little brother is (hint: it's the school whose
"fans" post more often on articles about their rivals than they do on
articles about their own team). Cheers.Go Cougs!
Hey, don't worry BYU fans, ASU likes BYU a whole lot more than Utah. You
see, we've triumphed over Utah every time we've played them since
1978, so they are a gimme win. At least when we play BYU, it could go both ways.
Looking forward to being with the best fans in the West! Come on
down Provo! We'd love to have you!
"BYU and Arizona State announced Thursday a home-and-home football series
for the 2020 and 2021 seasons."That's great for byu. Utah
also has a home-and-home series with ASU, which goes something like this:
2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2016-2017, 2017-2018, 2018-2019, and lastly, the 2020-2021
seasons where ASU will finally get around to beating byu. I thought
with the whole independence thing, this really wouldn't be big news. But it
is something to be excited about now that byu’s schedule of decent games
are surrounded by the much more common Middle Tennessee States, UNLVs, Savannah
States, Southern Miss, etc…
"Where the first game is played mean absolutely nothing"Blame:It absolutely means something, given the buyout clause in
virtually every contract. The first home team could cancel the return game and
POOF "Thanks for the home game. See ya'!"
@Chris BNo one on here is bragging. Can we be a little excited to
have a great series with a a good football team? Yes we get you get to play them
year in and year out. You remind us of that on just about every news feed on
here. Only difference between you and us, is we can actually compete with the
Pac-12 schools. Sorry about Coach Whit getting fired. Chris Hill
isn't going to have anyone else to blame.
Now if you could just beat those teams Chris.
jarka-rus"ASU isn't all that good an unranked Texas Tech
team with a freshman QB dismantled them in their bowl game"What
does that say about a Utah team that hasn't beat ASU since 1978?
CougarSunDevil,So you're a Sun Devil too! So unfortunate, but
at least you got the BYU part right. ;) I'll have to wear BYU blue and a
UofA hat for effect when I attend the game. Good fun.
ArgoFY"Utah also has a home-and-home series with ASU, which goes
something like this: 2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2016-2017, 2017-2018, 2018-2019, and
lastly, the 2020-2021 seasons where ASU will finally get around to beating
byu."Yeah, it's about time we Sun Devils got around to
playing teams from Utah that can actually give us game. Since we've been
victorious against Utah since 1978.
"Since 1975 BYU and Utah have played exactly 19 one-and-ones."Wiscougar:Oh, where to start? During most of that time
period Utah and BYU didn't have hame-and-home contracts because they
didn't need them--they were in the same conferences! The conference
dictated the schedule. Since 2011, the year the Utes began Pac-12 play, the game
has been played on single-game contracts. If you still don't
get it, then consider this. In the how would you characterize it if we measured
since 1976? Then they all "start" at Rice/RES.
Ouch Alex 1! I guess we both agree that each other has it half
right. It would be fun to have you! We'll have to find the common ground
and at least cheer for BYU. I'm sure those surrounding my season seats will
give me a hard time throughout the year. I'm sure I'll be cheering for
both teams. Sure makes it hard to not walk away from this game with a big smile
on my face either way. I look forward to the BYU/Arizona game at
University of Phoenix Stadium in 2016 too. I could come out of that game a VERY
happy person when BYU wins! :)
ASU,We haven't had any problems with the cougars for a long time,
hope you can say the same after your series with them.
Re: JohnInSLCIt's called sarcasm. Obviously there is no
front-end of an ongoing series like that. I'm pointing out how ridiculous
this whole line of thinking (introduced by anti-BYU trolls) is. And thank you
for illustrating my second point (that little brother feels a great need to post
incessantly on articles about his rival). Cheers.
This is getting old Chris. BYU has had more games with the PAC 12 than you have
and you are a league member for 2 years now. Their winning percentage is better
than yours also. If you don't believe me, look up the schedules.Jeff
I think this series will be a lot of fun.How long has it been since Utah
neat ASU? 1977CNN has an interesting article on trolls and their
personalities after reading it.I feel sorry for the trolls.
ASU will run the Cougs right off the field.Gonna be hilarious.
Jeff, byu fans want to brag about a home and home with a power
conference team? LOL We have more of those going on every year than byu has.
If you don't believe me, look it up.Chris
It's apparent that many Utah fans are distraught about the athletic program
as a whole up at Utah and have to spin any article about BYU into a negative.
Why can't you say congrats and leave it at that? Who cares if Utah is in
the Pac and gets to play these type of teams year after year. At some point, it
has to get old being near the bottom of the league.
ASU just scheduled themselves 2 sure wins.
CougarSunDevil,I have lots of extended family in the Phoenix area
that are both Sun Devils and Cougars, so I know how it is. Good people. Yes, I
realize it is possible to be a Sun Devil and a good member of the church. ;)
I'll tell you what, when the ASU/UofU game comes around, I will
borrow some ASU gear and lend support.
Nice job of scheduling, any way you cut it.Jeff 1sLet's not play connect the dots, how has BYU done vs. Utah? That
always seems to be the stat that BYU fans love to sweep under the rug, kind of
like Utah sweeping BYU in Football and Hoops this year.
Wiscougar:You say that NOW. I don't know, though, as some y
"fans" can pull out some astounding spin--without a trace of sarcasm.
To your second point, I rarely comment on BYU articles until after
some y "fan" takes a swing at the Utes--just like here. But it's
nice to know you never comment on Utah articles.
Carnack,Well since the Cougars won the last two meetings that is not a
sure bet but one thing that IS a sure bet is that the utes will continue to
lose to ASU every season until the PAC boots the utes out.
I wonder if BYU's pending games with Arizona helped influence ASU to get in
on the party. It's a bit embarrassing for ASU when your rival schedules
BYU for a game in your own backyard (Glendale). Glad to see these games finally
on the Cougars schedule.
Good games. I was at the last ASU-BYU game in Tempe. Not that I
think it makes any difference at all but for those looking for a reason why ASU
might have wanted the first game in the series at their place...perhaps they
wanted the benefit of having the attractive match-up with BYU available to their
fan base as soon as possible as well as the opportunity to host the accompanying
large contingent of BYU fans in AZ. BYU, looking to further it's stated
goal of playing a nationally diverse schedule as an Independent was happy to
have the first game in Tempe since it's been awhile since they've
played a game there and they're excited about giving their AZ fans a chance
to see them play ASAP. Why not?
Carnak"ASU just scheduled themselves 2 sure wins."Just like the PAC-12 South got every year when Utah and Colorado were added.
Alex 1,I tried to say what a quality fan you are and how grateful I
am that there are fans like you in this world, keeping things real. But DN
didn't let it post. I don't know. Either way, keep the hope alive
And the trotting trolls are out again in full force totally obsessed with BYU
Football. They just can't resist. And yes, the great rivalry between BYU
and ASU continues. Anyone know the overall record between ASU v. utah? And what
is the record "lately"?? crickets, crickets. I don't know, has utah
EVER beat ASU? Hard to remember back so many years.
Jimmer Fredette 24 Points 6 Threes vs Knicks 12.02.2014 (check it out on
YouTube). The above is relevant because of all of the BYU Haters on
Were I the Athletic Director, I cancel games with Utah and play other PAC teams.
Over time, almost everyone wants to play the Cougars. I'm not sure why
anyone would want to say anything negative about this serious. These signings
are routine and are worthy of little comment. BYU plays a nationwide schedule
rather than a regional one. The PAC is a good fit for Utah. Independence is a
better fit for BYU. Conference games become filled with poor sportsmanship and
are not always pleasant to visit. Playing an independent schedule offers a
better environment for teams and fans alike.
I think it is great that these 2 games got scheduled. BYU with their
independence needs to schedule more games with teams the level of ASU or higher.
Keep hearing that BYU wants to be ranked in the Top 10 consistently. The only
way they are going to achieve that is to schedule and beat teams in the PAC
10+2,the Big 12,the BIG 10, and the ACC. The problem is getting that level of
teams to schedule with them. The "Y" may well have to swallow their
pride and schedule some 2 for 1's. The challenge is to actually start
beating that level of team. Whether BYU fans believe it or not the loss to
Washington in your bowl game was a huge indicator of where BYU is on a national
@Chris B: "Isn't it interesting that byu fans have to answer to as to
why all of these arragnements all are away first."Because we
realize that the person asking the questions will just keep moving the bar. But
for fun, I quickly investigated whether it was even true. Just looking at the
matchups with teams that were in the BCS, where BYU has an equal number of home
and away games scheduled (we all agree that 2-for-1's are not the best),
here's what I come up with.GT: A HASU A HUCF: H
ACincy: H AWSU: H AUVa: A H A HStanford: A A H HCal: A HUConn: A HSo 6 of 9 are "away first"
matchups. Interesting maybe, but not all "away first". Maybe random
Sounds great! Given the number of comments from Utah fans, this BYU-ASU series
seems to have struck a nerve.
It's interesting to see how desperate some Utah fans have become for the
Utes not to be left out of the discussion.Despite their silly dire
predictions that Independent BYU would struggle to continue scheduling big name
opponents, more and more evidence is mounting to prove our little friends on the
I think too much is made over which school gets the first game.. Existing
schedules often dictate the balance of home/away games. Neither school wants a
schedule with too many away games.
This is a nice addition for BYU and they did it with a home and home game.
I'll be rooting for ASU but that doesn't diminish the value of these
games. The Y has a few good teams scheduled for that year, including (I think 3
PAC 12 teams) already. Hope they can add Utah to the schedule and a few other
decent teams instead of MTSU, Hawaii, and Idaho State.quick reply to
McNasty re "Judging from recent history, there is a good chance that BYU
will get a win over ASU before Utah will." By that logic it would be a fair
statement to say BYU will also get a win over ASU before they beat Utah. I
guess if you can't beat a team head to head, you have to rely on some other
team to do the work for you.
I just hope this country is functional when these teams play each other. It'll be interesting to see if the utes are playing any bowl games
at that time.
Wer, Ken and others,Tell us where the first game of your new series with
Michigan is played? Having just checked out the schedule for Utah it is being
played in the Big House on the UM campus!!! Let the spin begin!!! I am a Big
Fresno State fan having grown up in Fresno but please they are not a National
Brand big time program!!! No telling where ASU and BYU will be when these games
are played, could be good, bad or near the same level!!! Only time will tell!!!
Glad to see other PAC12 teams do not have a problem scheduling the Cougs!!! Go Cougs!!! Rise Up
This is good. I was at the last BYU game in Sun Devil Stadium. Pregame
interviews with players indicated that BYU's receivers would be easy to
cover. BYU won ugly. Pretty good game, actually.BYU has played a lot
of PAC12 teams. Wonder what their overall record is - from the Lavell days on,
that is. No doubt Chris B will have the numbers.
It's quite obvious that Ute fans are in denial over the value of it's
national exposure as an independent. That value will continue to grow year by
year. Of course the value of being in the PAC12 is pretty strong too. Even for a
bottom dweller. This is a great match up and has terrific regional
appeal. To deny that is to admit ignorance of the game.
Why waste paper with something so far away? 2020 and 2021?..hahahahahah
Having the first game in Tempe works fine for me :-) When can I order my
Some Ute fans need to stop telling Cougar fans how they have moved on, and just
move on.As part of the PAC, you have a lot more to worry about than
whether or not you are more prestigious or more of a national presence than BYU.
Like how do you go about out-recruiting any of the other PAC schools? Yeah,
Colorado really is your rival there. And maybe WSU. Fight On!Go Cougars!
@myperspective...One would actually have to be familiar with college
football to understand that ASU and BYU were key rivals in past years as members
of the WAC... They have also played home and home before since they and AZ moved
to the big bad pac10... Over the past 4 decades BYU is 4-6 against the Sundevils
while those masters of the grid iron utes are a very weak 1-12 against them...
But that is not surprising, BYU has historically been more
competitive against pac10 teams over the years than Utah has been. Out of the 12
teams that currently make up the pac12 BYU has either .500 records or winning
records against 8 of the 12 members. The utes unfortunately can only make that
claim against 4 of the teams. So I understand the basis of the
frustration... Unfortunately, it's only going to get worse for the utes in
the coming years. Sorry.
@Reno,No spin needed, unlike for byu fans. The first game
with Michigan is at Michigan because Michigan is a better and more powerful
program than Utah. All Ute fans acknowledge that. Michigan is one of
the premier programs in the entire country. They have more power than
we do.How was that for you? Now, why is the first game
always away from byu again?
By 2020, the Utes will have plenty of chances to avenge their one-point loss to
the devils. Also by 2020, maybe byu will have finally figured out a way to beat
Utah. And that's a big maybe.
"The first game with Michigan is at Michigan because Michigan is a better
and more powerful program than Utah. All Ute fans acknowledge that.
Michigan is one of the premier programs in the entire country. They
have more power than we do."Chris B,By your logic
BYU is a more powerful program than Utah, since BYU was scheduled home first
since Utah "moved on" and joined the PAC. But I know you will then make
the argument that there can be a lot of reasons why one team is scheduled home
first, but you will fail to acknowledge any of those possibilities for some of
BYU's future games being away first.
I was at the last WAC game ASU played in Provo before joining the Pac10. It was
not a good year for ASU and BYU beat them. The Cougars' fans had a huge
sign in the end zone that read, "Why are you leaving the WAC when
you're at the bottom of the PAC."
The last time we played AZ ST in Tempee, we beat them. What a sweet victory it
was. It reminded me a lot of when we beat the Kansas State Team at
the Cotten Bowl. Each time, each place, there was A BAR and Grill near the
Stadium full of the favorites teachers/professors/and students. Each time, I
was in full BYU Fan Dress. Each time, drinking soda pop and being
razed for doing so, and eating sandwiches, the other team laughed and laughed to
think that we even had a chance to stay close in the game. I would tell them,
that on this given day, the best team would win. We all agreed to
meet at the Bar and Grill after the game to gloat or to be poked fun at. We won
those games and when I returned to the bar and grill, it was like a ghost town.
None of the gloaters reappeared.
