Then where are the jobs? I don't see employers begging people to come work
This idea from the Democrats that not working is liberating and possible because
of Obamacare is nothing more than another scam to get the uniformed voters to
keep them power. When will the taxpayers of America have enough of paying for
the freeloaders (insert victims if you are a Demo)?
There are costs for being employed - clothes, transportation, child care etc.
If the wage offered doesn't cover these expenses then one does not work.
Such is often the case in our low wage economy. Of course a tenat of capitalist
ideology is that unemnployment is never involutnary, so the spike in
unemployment following 2008 was all due to labor's laziness in that view.
In my experience the vast majority of people both need and want to work, if the
work situation "works."
Ernest,We could start by taking the jobs away from illegal
immigrants who have illegally taken the jobs from law abiding Americans. That
would be a start.
"A society rooted in responsibility must first promote the value of work,
not welfare,” President Barack Obama said in his 2014 State of the Union
address."Pot, meet kettle.Wow, this guy talks out
both sides of his mouth as well as any in history.Meanwhile he has
overseen the largest expansion of Food Stamp usage in the nations history. His
govt has literally hired people to recruit people to use more Food Stamps. It
is rampant with fraud and abuse and nothing is done except hand out more. The expansion of access (much of it with a wink/nod fraudulent) to
socialist programs is horrific. They are busy patting themselves on
the back about the unemployment rate and meanwhile back at the ranch the number
of people who simply give up looking for work in this horrible economy is
exploding.Liberalism, marxism, and socialism full speed ahead. He
and liberals know that appealing to selfish voters about what "politicians
will give them" will often buy the votes to win an election now.Is the math really to difficult? All of these people not working so workers
can't make enough to fund themselves plus non-workers. Duh.
I have a successful small business. I take good care of my employees. My taxes
went way up last year. I have lost deductions for my kids and I get a smaller
percentage deduction for charity (tithing and otherwise)in addition to other
increases. This increase in taxes has resulted in me not buying a
new car for a couple of extra years, putting off home improvements, eating out
less, and cutting out a trip for my family. I am not asking people to feel
sorry for me, just want people to realize if you work in the car industry, food
industry, construction industry, or travel industry, your money will be going to
the government and they will decide who gets it. If you have a job, it is not
you. Tax increases and regulation decrease freedom - the government chooses the
winners and losers.
Nice try Deseret News, but this dog won't hunt. If people
retire because they can now afford health care that only makes room for those
who need to work full time to get a job. The net gain for the economy is huge.
That's just what we wanted to happen. ObamaCare is working.
If one chooses to not work to take advantage of the new heatlh care law, that
person is likely in bad shape economically and is probably sick or has a sick
loved one. Many people get into a bind in their 50's, unable to find work
which covers expenses, with poor heatlh on top of that. A lot of people opt for
social security at 62 for these reasons. This society is increasingly hard on
low wage labor, but then labor has always had a hard row in capitalism. The Tea
Party and their enablers like the Kochs want to make it a whole lot harder.
if you work you lose your free or nearly free health insurance. Why work?
Welcome to the new "Obama-nation".
"Ernest,We could start by taking the jobs away from illegal
immigrants who have illegally taken the jobs from law abiding Americans. That
would be a start."I agree. So let's begin by
"deporting" all those who break the law and hire illegals knowing that
it is completely against the law? The best solution to illegal immigration
isn't a fence or mass deportation of millions. The best solution is to
imprison and severely penalize those who hire illegals. If the incentive to hire
illegals is gone, then the illegals will self deport and stop coming.Hire a single illegal? You lose your business and go to prison for 5+ years.
No exceptions. You'd be surprised how many "job
creators" would suddenly start to employ Americans if they knew that they
would go to prison if they hired illegals.Too bad no repub would
ever touch this plan. Nonono! We don't want to lose out on our handouts
from big business! Instead, let's bash illegals and talk big about building
a fence that we will never build to give the appearance of tackling illegal
immigration but in reality ignoring it.
A society that coddles the WILLINGLY unemployed... reaps what it sows. There are many who want to work, but can't (because of physical or mental
handicaps, or jobs fitting their skills are not available, etc). But people
who CHOOSE to be unemployed (because they can make more on unemployment than
they can working)... will drag this economy and this nation down with them. The "Safety-Net" was made for the first group above (unemployed
but want to work). Not for the new generation that is increasingly willingly
unemployed (and has no intention of working IF they can get away with it). The
"Safety-Net" should NOT be used to enable these willingly unemployed
people (IMO).If we use the safety-net for people who don't
really NEED it (but just want to use it)... it may not be available for someone
who truly needs it. These funds can't last forever.
A colleague now teaches exclusively on line after being laid off as a full-time
chemistry professor in 2011. With adjunct wages so low, she can't cost
justify the expense of driving from school to school so online make sense, and
with 75% of all college teaching jobs now being held by adjunct and not FT
instructors, this trend will probably continue.
@Ernest - You're missing a key point of the article. Because of Obamacare,
job growth has been stalled because employers are now paying more for their
employees' health care. So, for those people who actually do want to work
and not live off subsidies/gov't aid, there will be less jobs available.
Another thing that the article fails to mention is how the proposed increase in
minimum wage will also hinder job growth... While it's great that the POTUS
can beat his chest about instilling the value of hard work in people, his
policies are just further cultivating a larger group of government dependents.
The Real Maverick;Haven't seen a lot of illegal or undocumented
professors with PhDs at the university or graduate school level
So it's unemployed peoples faults that they can't find a job?Really?Because I was told throughout the past decade that giving
the rich tax breaks was going to help raise my salary and they were also going
to create jobs. Instead, jobs have been lost (and never recovered) and salaries
have been slashed.I feel like I've been lied to in order for
the GOP to push their agenda on me. How sad.
If ANY are willfully unemployed... then yes... too many are willfully
unemployed.===Work is a good thing. It's something
every person should do. That doesn't mean we should all be doing the SAME
work, or at the same level... but we should all be working (to the best of our
ability). You don't have to be paid for the work you are
doing.... but you should still be working. Even if you are just volunteering in
the neighborhood.I have a mentally handicapped neighbor I see
walking the neighborhood every day... picking up garbage. It's his
"Work". He doesn't get paid, but he works. And he's
happy. We should all work, how much we get paid is mostly irrelevant
(IMO) as long as you can support your family. But if you can't
support your family... and you are willfully unemployed... you need to think
about what you are doing.
Maverick,Re "So it's unemployed peoples faults that they
can't find a job?"...I didn't see anybody say
"It's unemployed peoples faults that they can't find a job".
That's a straw man.===There will always be
unemployed people. That's a fact of life (and why we have the
safety-net). But what we are talking about here today is a special case... of
people who WANT/INSIST on being unemployed (meaning they refuse to work). That
is the person's fault.===Being "willfully
unemployed"... means you choose to be unemployed (not that you can't
find a job). This describes people who think they don't need a job
anymore and stop looking because they don't need insurance for their family
through their employer, and they don't need a paycheck from their employer
(because they can get one from the government for staying home)."Willfully Unemployed" doesn't describe most people who are
unemployed. It's a very small fraction.
It amazes me how conservatives can talk out both sides of their mouths. Look
they say, the economy is still terrible and it's Obama's fault. Look
they say, people that are out of work, could have jobs if they really wanted
to.Which is it?
If someone chooses to work less due to health insurance benefits, that is
totally their choice. After all, this is America. Why anyone would seek to
give advice or criticize is beyond me. That others are somehow paying for this
is nonsense. Why the need to meddle in others affairs?
It simply isn't necessary that everyone work.Back when most
everyone was a farmer or a hunter, and this was done by hand or with help of
animals, it was necessary that every person work. Today with technology, its no
longer necessary. Today a room full of 100 people with 5 of them working full
time and the rest not working can produce as much economically as a room full of
100 people with all of them working 12 hours a day 7 days a week could 300 years
ago.And the progress continues, We are more productive than in the
1980's because of progress that has happened since then. The 40
hour work week should be lessened. Of course pay would need to go up, but this
could happen if income were distributed more equally.
2 bitsCottonwood Heights, UTIf ANY are willfully unemployed... then
yes... too many are willfully unemployed.===My wife has
been "willfully" unemployed for 29 years raising our children. Why are trashing on women who are just trying to follow the Prophet?
Open Minded Mormon,I think if you told your wife she has not been working
for 29 years (while she was nurturing your kids, and cleaning your house, and
cooking your food)... you would be looking for your face that just got slapped
off.I said... you don't need to be paid. But you need to be
working. I think women working at home work as hard as any office worker.
And the product of their work (your children) is more important than anything
produced by any office worker.==I was not trashing
women... you were (by assuming what many women do is not "work").Your false accusation is on par with Democrats who constantly accuse
Conservatives for their supposed "War on Women". And about as accurate
as that false characterization.
Maverick,Putting all illegals in jail for 5 years when it's
determined they are illegal would also do the trick I'll
support putting business owners there for 5 years if you support putting the
illegal aliens there as well. Deal?
@2bitsI said... you don't need to be paid. ======== NO, you did not. -- Please stop trying to twist my words... Here, allow me to quote you again ---"2 bitsCottonwood
Heights, UTIf ANY are willfully unemployed..." My wife and millions of other women are "willfully unemployed" [YOUR
words]I know my wife "wroks, but that isn't what you said.Sorry I have to call you on it...BTW -- I was not
trashing women... you were ("If ANY are willfully unemployed...").Be more carfeul.
@Open Minded,So now you bring up what your Mormon prophet says,
which not many of us believe you are a Mormon. But if you are, why pick and
choose what your Mormon prophet says? I can give you a list of several things
your prophet has said that you have agreed with. So why can't
2 bits do the same(such is your insinuation that he's suggesting something
contrary to your prophet)? Flip, flop.
@Ernest T. Bass 10:57 a.m. Feb. 10, 2014Then where are the jobs? I
don't see employers begging people to come work for them.---------------------------Unfortunately a lot of the jobs are
overseas where Mitt Romney, and people like him, sent them to they could profit
from the out-sourcing.
I think somebody needs to study history a little more! They forget the
shantviiles, people having to work long days for almost nothing! life
wasn't that easy! You want to back, go ahead! god forbid somebody to expect
a decent wage!
