Love how this team put the game away. Several young rising stars already showing NBA potential. Delon is one of the front runners for PAC 12 player of the year. Let's hope that he stays around long enough to lead the Utes to greatness before he goes to the pros.

    Sammyg, Block U baby!

Much improved bench play the last two games. Still need to put away at the end of the 1st half, but great to see Onwas, Ogbe, and others improve and take pressure off Wright, Taylor, and Loveridge.

Need a road win next week! If we could split in LA heading into a 3-game home stand, it could really help them possibly get into a postseason tourney.

    Go Utes!

6 Utes in double figure scoring is a good stat. The opponent wasn't great, but getting on a streak is never unwelcome, regardless of the opponents. SC is a tougher team at home, and is giving all they can against their crosstown rivals right now, but are certainly beatable. Offensive play like the last road game and rebounding efforts like the last two games will both be needed to pick up the first, and hopefully second, road win(s) of the season next week.

Now the only question that I want answered is can they win one road game this year?

BYU has beat more pac 10.2 teams on the road this year than utah has.

I'm a Ute fan, but this record still won't get them to the NIT let alone the "Big Dance". Maybe next year with the talent they are bringing in.

Congratulations ute fans, you got some badly needed revenge against your new rival... Oh wait, I forgot the Buffs are your new rival... It's all so confusing, hard to tell the 3 teams apart (y'all have a bunch in common in both football and basketball (now that Colorado is stinking it up without Dinwiddle)... So if I say Washington State or Colorado just figure that I mean the utes as well...

The title of the story though really bags the question "If you are 16-1 at home and your total record is 16-7, how many road games have the utes won? It also raises the question to those who are not so good at math...How many total Road Games have you had??? lol.

Winning breeds confidence and its appears the Utes got bucketfuls of them now. I'm sure it feels great to avenged their previous losses to the W schools. Wins have not come easy for them on the road so far but I wouldn't count them out yet. Hope they'll turn the corner this next road trip against the Trojans and the Bruins. Tough order but not at all impossible for them. Not a fan but I still root for them when not playing us.

    Good luck Utes!

Joe Schmoe says BYU has beaten more pac 10.2 teams on the road than utah has, but he doesn't quite finish the sentence, now does he. Let me help if I can. "Ahem...unfortunately one of the pac 10.2 teams they didn't beat on the road--in fact, got schooled by on the road were (wait for it) why, none other than those very same Utes! But let's pretend that never happened."

If the Utes were capable of winning a conference road game, they might have a chance at the NIT.

Unfortunately, a 19-12 record, 7-11 in the conference, with only 17 D-1 wins and winless on the road, isn't going to impress any of the NIT, let alone, the NCAA selection committees.

    poyman,

Coach K said that Colorado was a rivalry game before we played them but I don't think we've been in the PAC 12 long enough to establish any rivalries. For now, owning byu in the major sports works for us.

Credit the Utes, who have enough talent to win games in SLC. Now if the Utes can just figure out how to win on the road.

I still think if the Utes would have played a couple more MWC, on the road, in pre-season, it would have helped immensely in league play.

Good that we were able to hold home court. It's critical that we win at USC next week, a split next week will be big for this young team.

We need Loveridge to continue shooting like he has the last two games 11/13 (84%). Taylor is also stepping up his game. The question is can they continue it on the road. Hope so!

The utes have improved from a year or two ago. But BYU is still the class of the State of Utah and one of the best programs in the West. Yep, that's right utes, the Blue is still the better team and it's not even close.

  • motorbike Cottonwood Heights, UT
    Feb. 9, 2014 5:36 p.m.

Utah took care of the most important stats ... rebounds, steals and turnovers. Add up the difference in each and Utah came out plus 9. Even if Utah doesn't shoot a great percentage (which they did) they would've put themselves in a good position to win with a number like that.
If they can do the same on the road they'll get the break through road victory they so badly need in order to take things up a level.
    Go get USC... Go Utes!

Establishing a home court advantage is a big step in the progression of this team.

Unfortunately, the losing on the road is approaching albatross status. The monkey on the team back has to have them pressing, particularly down the stretch. The problem is, the longer they go without a win, the heavier that monkey gets.

  • StGtoSLC SALT LAKE CITY, UT

Cosmo's Cousin, according to ESPN, yes, BYU is still one of the best teams in the West... behind Arizona, UCLA, San Diego State, Oregon, Gonzaga, Arizona State, Stanford, Utah, New Mexico, and Colorado (and to Ken Pomeroy, just flip-flop Cal with Colorado). Congrats on that.

    according to ESPN,

    #45 BYU(17-9) SOS #20, 6-6 versus RPI Top 100

    is BETTER THAN

    #99 Utah((16-7) SOS #188, 4-6 versus RPI Top 100

BYU is projected to be a #12 seed, IN the tournament.
Utah is projected to be on the OUTSIDE looking in.

    BYU > Utah

"Again, Utah has one less road win than BYU's total wins in 1996-1997 (1-25)."

You seriously went back almost 20 years to defend your teams atrocious road play? Apples to Apples would be nice, but then I shouldn't expect fair evaluation.

"For now, owning byu in the major sports works for us."

Yeah, definitely demonstrates how Utah is 'over' BYU. Only proves that Utah and BYU are tied forever and neither side can let the other side go. Another reason why Utah doesn't belong in the PAC-12.

  • CougarSunDevil Phoenix, AZ
    Feb. 10, 2014 8:04 a.m.

"congratulations on your new rival Pacific "

I haven't heard one person, other than Ute fans, state that BYU's rival is anyone but Utah. Utah fans vain attempt at trying to pretend they are superior than BYU.

Utah is a lesser organization standing the shoulders of greater programs.

  • StGtoSLC SALT LAKE CITY, UT
    Feb. 10, 2014 9:33 a.m.

No playoff, that's according to RPI, which ESPN posts daily, and rewards teams heavily for their strength of schedule, regardless of their record against the top teams on the schedule. This becomes apparent over the last few weeks when BYU started their conference with a paltry 8-5 record and an RPI in the top 20, then has gone on to post a decent conference record against mostly bad teams, and has dropped nearly 30 spots already, and, barring upset wins over Gonzaga or at SMC, will continue to drop, regardless of whether they beat all the other teams or not. Utah's RPI has improved nearly 100 places since January, and will continue to do so unless they lose badly to comparably ranked teams.

ESPN's statisticians developed a rating system, the Basketball Power Index, which uses strength of schedule, but doesn't rely on it as heavily as RPI, instead factoring wins being better than losses, margin of victory, and using a more comprehensive strength of schedule formula that goes beyond opponents' W/L records. The BPI is very comparable to Ken Pomeroy's ratings, and has actually proven a more accurate predictor of games than the RPI, Sagarin or KenPom.

  • StGtoSLC SALT LAKE CITY, UT
    Feb. 10, 2014 9:50 a.m.

So, like I said, according to ESPN, BYU (#46) is the 11th best team in the West, behind Arizona (#1), UCLA (#16), San Diego State (#20), Oregon (#23), Gonzaga (#28), ASU (#32), Stanford (#35), Utah (#37), New Mexico (#43), and Colorado (#44).

If the tournament were selected today, no, Utah would not be considered, simply because of their road record. But I think Lunardi has BYU on the opposite side of the bubble from where the selection committee would place them because of their ratio of good wins to bad losses. Both are probably NIT bound.

    CougFaninTX,
Maybe we are "over" byu. When I say "For now, owning byu in the major sports works for us." it's in reply to and for the benefit of you and the rest of the byu "fan" that incessantly come to Utah articles to insult our teams. You know, I've never heard anybody from the PAC 12 or any other major conference say that Utah doesn't belong and there's nobody clamoring for byu to "come join us". If you guys are so pleased and satisfied with things as they are in happy valley, what with your independence, tv network, espn contract, schedule and bowls, why not just stick to supporting and encouraging your teams and leave the Utes alone?

    LOL at your spin.

ESPN's Bracketology clearly shows that BYU is considered the better team.

BYU is listed in the Last Four IN the tourney.
    Utah isn't even mentioned.

BYU is 6-6 (50%) versus RPI Top 100
Utah is 4-6 (40%) versus RPI Top 100

    BYU is 1-3 (25%) versus AP/Coaches Top 25
    Utah is 0-1 (0%) versus AP/Coaches Top 25
