A great 2014 recruiting class shaping up for BYU - looking forward to hearing all about it at the Cougar Club luncheon today.

Isn't "BYU's 2014 recruiting class of 2014" redundantly repeating itself over and over?

Anywho, good luck to all of the new recruits.

  • Wiscougarfan River Falls, WI

Already a decent signing class even without some of the big-time stars who are currently question marks. If we get any of those (Mama, Nacua, Sutton, Leiataua) I think we did o.k. BYU usually ranks around 60-70 and we should be around there again this year.

How is the OL coming for the this year of 2014? That is the most critical, as it was last year, in which it had its problems.

I'm excited to see some of the late signees. BYUs recruiting class will rank lower overall because they will only have 15-16 recruits but they are getting quality players.

And yes, could we change the headline: BYUs 2014 recruiting class of 2014 sounds just a tad redundant.

No Fred Warner? Did we lose him to USC?

Mama to USC, Sutton to SMU, still nothing on Warner or Leiataua, Nacua's mom said he is going to BYU. Anybody know about Takitaki?

Mama to USC, Sutton to SMU, Nacua's mother said he is going to BYU. Anything on Warner, Leiataua, or Takitaki?

No Warner hasn't sent his in yet. I'm excited about Devon Blackmon though...he can be something special and is rated 4 stars and Juco top 50 by ESPN (above Nick Kurtz).

Happy to see Blackmon and Leslie on the list. Still hopeful for Nacua, Warner and Leiataua. Small but good recruiting class.

At least they got the best possible outcome at WR, 2 of the top JUCO guys and the UTEP transfer were big gets for BYU. WR should be a strength with those guys added

    SportsFan:
I think Takitaki is solid for BYU he just hasn't sent his in yet either. My understanding is that Warner is also waiting but will commit to BYU (according to a grad assistant I know). Who knows on Nacua and Leiatua.

  • #1SportsFan Clinton, UT
    Feb. 5, 2014 10:25 a.m.

I am being told Nacua is BYU bound. His mother thanked Bronco yesterday for opening up a scholarship for him even after they pulled their offer when he decided to play out the recruiting process this past fall, that is what I am hearing anyway.

    SportsFan:
I hope you're right about Nacua. That would be awesome...and 3 four star recruits now that Fred W and Blackmon have signed. And other services have Kurtz listed as 4 star as well. This is shaping up to be a nice class, and you know what I like most about it? It has some speed and athletes...something BYU has been lacking in.

Welcome to the Blue recruits, we're excited to have you!

All the recruiting sites have us getting Mariner and Pau'u, are they still coming to BYU? Not that either is highly ranked, just wondering on their status.

Looks like Leiataua has signed. Nice! Yes, it does seem there are more 3-4 star recruits this year. Interesting to see if a certain fan base we all know will all of a sudden change their tune to say stars don't matter. Personally, I think in some ways in matters but it's certainly not everything. Just compare Heaps and Hoffman to see the truth in that. Overall, I'd say this is a nice class. There's always a bit of mystery out there with missionaries coming and going. Pretty impressive that we went head to head with USC and got 3 of the 4. No one really thought we'd get Mama anyway-- just not realistic. Excited to see the WR's, LB's and linemen. All the right pieces. Go Coug's!!

    Feb. 5, 2014 2:47 p.m.

What a class! So excited to see these guys especially the ones who should make an immediate impact. FOUR 4 star recruits if you count Kurtz who is 4 star according to rivals. Well done!

  • dnay Salt Lake City, UT
    Feb. 5, 2014 3:20 p.m.

Actually turned out to be a pretty steller class, from my count it looks like 4 4 star recruits, Kurtz, Blackmon, Warner, and Nacua. Seems like we got everyone we really wanted other than Mama. Was pumped about Blackmon, now it seems we've got some fast receivers to stretch the field, something we've been missing. Looks like the defense is in great shape for many years to come as well.

Seems to me that BYU won the recruiting battle in the state, now let's hope that translates onto the field. Great Job to all the coaches, a pretty exciting day!

Leiataua switched from Stanford because he was told that he would not be getting playing time right away (probably wouldn't have played in the near future, either). At BYU he would have little competition.

Like Bronco always says, we never signed anyone we didn't recruit or was it we never lost a recruit who wanted to sign?

Um there are actually articles stating why he switched.
Nice spin though on a kid that passed up the U.

    GoRed:
You should be concerned about that as a ute fan. Stanford's class is ridiculous this year, so he would have much better chances at Utah as well. PAC12 did VERY well recruiting this year....well the elite programs did. The future is not looking up for the utes I'm afraid when looking at the kind of classes USC, ASU, UCLA, Stanford, Oregon, and Washington had this year. This was Utah's worst class since joining the PAC12...I'd worry about who U can start and give playing time to that will help U compete.

    According to ESPN:

BYU offers who signed with Utah: 1
    Christiansen

Utah offers who signed with BYU: 6
    Blackmon
    Bushman
    Fuga
    Kaufusi
    Leiataua
    Fonua

While it's nice for the high school kids to get all the attention, half the recruits for all teams don't pan out. Injuries, homesickness, lack of effort etc. I've lost my enthusiasm for signing day anymore as every team hypes it up. Seems like grade inflation too, so many four stars and three stars anymore you would think every high schooler is an all American.

    Cougsndawgs,

The difference between our two programs is that Utah has interesting, challenging games each and every week. This upcoming season the schedule includes Michigan and a very tough Fresno State team (11-2 last year, 1st place in the MWC) in addition to Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, USC, etc.

BYU, on the other hand, will be playing such teams as UNLV (always bad), Middle Tennessee State (who?), Cal (1-11 in the PAC 12 last season), and Savannah State (really?). It's true, Utah has increased their competition bigtime. But each game is exciting and worthwhile for us season ticket holders. I don't think the same can be said for your games.

  • SSmith Salt Lake City, UT

This issue here is recruiting. BYU clearly out-recuited Utah, and yet detractors divert to unrelated and unsupported hyperbole.

    GoRed,

"..each game is exciting and worthwhile for us season ticket holders. I don't think the same can be said for your games."

And yet attendance in Provo is often twice as much as in Salt Lake. I'd say that speaks volumes about the loyalty of the fan base.

    @GoRed

I find BYU's games every bit as interesting as the ones the Utes are playing. I loved watching MTS last year. Most football fans know Middle Tennessee has some lower level SEC level recruits and has been a winning program for several years. Besides, MTS was one of the best programs for takeaways last year, and has a pretty good defense. While it isn't the rivalry that Utah has been, MTS is just as important to the national scene as Utah is. However its the games against likely ranked Texas, UCF, Houston, USU and the game against Boise that make the schedule so nice.

    @gored...

So the utes have games against interesting opponents every week??? Let me see, Weber State, WSU, Colorado, and then watching them get burried by Arizona, OSU, UCLA, USC, Oregon and not playing in a bowl for two years... That's interesting stuff alright... zzzz...Meanwhile the Cougs drubbing of National Powerhouse Texas and Boise State (who the utes have never beaten) is boring right??? lol.

The ute games were so exciting that they had 25,000 show up for the game between their new rivals (the Colorado Buffalos) and half of those left around half time.

BYU will average well over 60,000 fans a game this year... if the utes were to even sell out they would have 20% to 25% less folks watch their home games...

The ute's new motto..."We are not very good, but their are a couple of teams in our conference that are okay"...lol.

Remind us what interesting and challenging games the Utes have had during bowl week the past two seasons.

Being a perennial punching bag for the big boys of the PAC 12 will eventually get old even for the most die hard kids living under the crimson bubble.

I noticed that the Entering PAC 12 country billboard got shifted from the west side of I-15 at the top of the hill at Point of the Mountain to the bottom of the hill on the east side behind a building. You don't see the sign until you get right too it. I had a good chuckle about it yesterday coming home from the MTC after dropping off my daughter. Karma perhaps?
