Please do not increase the gas tax. There is a saying about death being caused
by a thousand cuts. We are being taxed to death by a thousand "small"
I love Utah, but it certainly is not a tax friendly state. States have four
ways of raising funds for the treasury: 1) State Income Tax, 2) State Sales Tax,
3) State Property Tax, 4) and fees associated with government services. Utah is
high in each of these. The answer to the states future funding woes is not to
increase taxes...it is to manage the states affairs with the current amount of
taxing already in place. Granted, roads and education are important ways for
the state to spend money, but if increases are needed in theses areas, then cuts
should be made in other less essential areas.
What a perfect combination! Raise the speed limit so more gas will be burned,
then raise the gas tax. BRILLIANT!!!!!
How is taxing the gas going to fix the problem??All that's going to
do is put a bigger burden on low income families. We still have to get to
work somehow and for some people the bus or train is not an optionOur
state government is starting to sound like the federal government when they come
up with these none sensible ideas. This sounds just like cap and trade
taxing the air we breath. The only solution to mitigate this problem since
we'll never be able to get rid of it is: fewer car on the roads or
incentivize electric cars, vanpooling or carpooling. electric cars will increase
the demand for electricity thus forcing electric companies to increase their
pricesPeople that are not from Utah don't seem to understand that
this problem has been around longer than economic boom or industrialized
development has been around. tripling the size of our population only
exasperates the problem more but we will never get rid of inversions.Taxing the gasoline is a dumb solution worthy of liberal democrats but not
If we need to raise revenues locally for roads, why not go back to a property
tax on cars? Change the registration "fees" that are not deductible
from Federal taxes back to a property tax, raise them by 15-20% (or whatever the
average marginal Federal tax rate is in the state), and presto, the state gets
more money, we have more money for roads, and everyone gets a Federal tax
deduction on their automotive property taxes. More money for roads, and no net
tax increase. It's a win-win.
Truth in taxation was a law that took my say about any thing Ut. wants to tax me
on. To think that people voted for that, WOW.
Please do not increase the gas tax. We pay enough already. We do not need to
kill a struggling economy. Outlaw driving kids to school, make them walk like
we did. Have you seen the school parking lots during drop off time and pick up?
Its a major traffic jam. Stop the wood burning. I have a wood stove that I
would gladly use only in an emergency. There are other ways to help. I am over
60 and I remember these inversions going on forever. Its nothing new.
NO more taxes period. Work harder in legislature to cut waste, such as paying
hundreds of thousands of dollars in penalties for improper job-bid observations
so companies benefit from doing nothing more than bidding on a job. Work on
getting more for the amazing natural resources we have in this state, minerals
and fuel. We need to charge air pollution fees to the sources of that
pollution, with pollution as the focus, to clean up our air.
No More Houses/Businesses/Industry on the Wasatch Front. The Wasatch
Front air is sick, because of congestion, cars going 75 mph on road to limitless
destinations to get a burger, $Billion dollar road projects in the wrong
locations with sick airshed, and basically very poor planning.Having
the dirtiest air in the nation in the highest birthing area of the nation is
just plain stupid. The cause is sick air is the Wasatch Front Valley Bowl. Our
beautiful Wasatch Mountains created a bowl limiting the amount of people that
can live in its Valley. The carrying capacity of Wasatch Front Valley
airshed has exceeded its natural carrying capacity for people making grandpa,
grandma, mom, dad, children, cats/dogs sick. What is the point of a
deluxe education system, modern buildings, and ipad education if the mothers of
students pull their children from school to literally save their lives because
of dirty air caused by over development along the Wasatch Front Valley? We can see the dirty air we breath. It's time to reduce mph for on the
highways, stop UDOT projects which increase car counts, stop building permits.
Nature created an area which will not tolerate an unlimited population.
Utah is overly taxes? Huh? What are you basing this on? Somalia, which
doesn't have any taxes whatsoever? So let me get this
straight... When times are bad, we can't raise taxes. Now that times are
good, we still can't raise taxes? So when can taxes be raised then?Sorry, but we have roads, school, and other necessary services to be
financed. We can't live in a 21st century world and live with 19th century
taxes. We need to raise taxes. A few bucks here and there won't
break anybody. Time for big families to be held accountable. If you decide to
have a big family then expect to pay for it.
Is that typical or what. "Though there is adequate revenue now," the
thought process is to raise taxes rather than cutting boondoggle expenditures.
Is there a requirement that for someone to run for office they have to have a
genetic defect preventing them from understanding how to balance a budget by
controlling expenditures rather than believe that taxpayers are bottomless money
pits? I live in CA now. I see a CA to UT migration. Some wishing to get from
under repressive laws and taxes in CA. Others making the move are intent on
converting UT to a strongly Blue state, as was done with Colorado. You allow
increases in government freebees and UT will become the destination of the
"moocher" Left. And, the morality and self-sufficiency of the Utah
community will be diluted with too many who think the government and the
taxpayer are a primary charity organization. Control your expenditures!
Bruce,Your comments are very interesting, why would some who is a
"moocher" as you say leave California. California provides greater
benefits for the so called "moocher". Or could it be there is something
different at play here. Utah has space for affordable development and many
places in California real estate is out of reach for a lot of people. San
Francisco real estate is terribly expensive. California residents want high
standard of living and they will bring their philosophies and ideas with them.
Utah needs to become more progressive and look for solutions to pollution. I
welcome progressive minded people to the state and I do hope Utah is transformed
with multiple viewpoints on issues. Utah has had only one viewpoint represented
for far too long and we are seeing the results and they are not very good
overall. This has nothing to do with "mooching".
Senator Jones has a practical and common sense idea in handling our state need
for education funding with limits on exemptions. It does not increase taxes and
yet is a way to still help fund a growing student population in the state. Too
bad many Republican legislators will not support it because the idea is being
proposed by a Democrat.
I am single and I always end up paying more taxes than my friends with large
families. They can't wait for their big refund, I struggle to pay. I
support limiting exemptions. Can't come soon enough.
Please don't refer to it as a "head tax". It's time that
large, LDS families pay for their life style and stop having the silent minority
pay their way. No more state deductions for more than 2 children.
Alternative to raising gas taxes: cut government. Then you'll have less
people spending our money, and it may make legislators more wary of their wanton
eyes. Progress does not necessarily mean growth.
NeilT - one the bright side, all of those kids will paying your social securiry.
And so the forty five day circus at the capital begins today. How wonderful.
RBB,Not necessarily I may be paying for all their welfare, wic etc
Another word for money is currency. How about channeling it instead of diverting
The Utah legislative sessions are like an NBA game...nothing of note
happens until the last 2 minutes
Tax diapers and baby food. Problem solved
Diapers and baby food? You hurt the kids.2¢ tax on jello and
ice cream non essentials, not healthy, used by a majority instead of sin tax on
minorities.Gas tax is a great Idea to cut down on those commuting in
their rolling billboard Hummer's.Here's a novel idea...
raise the royalties on oil and gas production in Utah, haven't done that
since the 1920's and it's about time,. There's also none of that
hurting business and they'll leave nonsense, since oil's where you
find it not where corporate taxes are lowest.
