This is something we have known for a couple of years now. Carlino IS the
barometer of how the team plays. When he plays well--passes well, makes good
decisions, and shoots better than 40%-- the team almost always wins. When he is
in one of those funks--forcing bad shots, missing layups, dumb and selfish
play--the team usually loses. He really is the key to this team. More so than
Haws. So far, coming off the bench has worked out really well for him.
I've seen Carlino make some plays that just leave you with your jaw on the
floor in amazement. Of course, sometimes that amazement is because it was a
spectacular play, others it is wondering how somebody can be so boneheaded. But he does have a ton of talent. He just needs to learn to play within
himself and not try and force the spectacular play all the time.
I love Carlino when he plays within himself. I really don't care for him
when he's pushing so hard that he's out of control and far too often,
he loses the ball or takes a wild shot long before any shot clock violation.
The great guards in the game work hard to make everyone else better.
That's what he seems to be doing coming off the bench. So once again, I
love him for that. He can truly be great. But it's when he is not trying
to be the great one.
It actually doesn't matter if we love or hate Carlino. The biggest problem
with the Y is the lack of bigs, the lack of bench, and a lack of free throw
shooting. Carlino is a streaky shooter, and will never make all of his shots.
Now if the article said, Carlino must score 30 a night to overcome all of the
Y's weaknesess for the Y to win games, then sure I believe that.
Carlino's lack of consistency is just one of many problems with this team.
They are a middle of the road WCC team. Even at the 30ppg Carlino can't
rescue them from that.
Those are strong words, love or hate. I don't feel either for
him, I just don't think he is a very good ball player.
I've always said, "as Matt Goes, so goes the team." It
is maddening when he loses control because we know he a very capable player on
bothe ends of the floor. I'd rather have him on the team than
You would hope that Carlino, or any other player for that matter could bring
their A game every time but we all know that's not reality. We'd all
like to wish it is but it's not. I'm sure if Carlino could do it he
would every single time. It's frustrating for him because he wants to win
just as bad as us fans. Glad he's making a huge difference in his new role
and gaining his confidence back. It's only a matter of time before
he's starting again for sure.Go Cougars!
Putting Carlino on the bench has been a great move. It really has focused his
game. But I don't think Carlino is the key to BYU sucess, it's
Collingsworth. His mind set, skill, effort, are the very things that set a tone
for the team. He is great!
I agree with Chris B on his first point. I don't hate any player on any
team. These are kids learning about themselves and how to mold themselves into a
team framework.I don't agree that Carlino is a bad player.
He's quick, can shoot, and I think he's learning. The real
difference in this team is the emergence of certain red-headed kid who is a pure
scorer and the amazing play of Collinsworth. This gives Carlino a framework
where he doesn't need to feel that it's all on him.I'd sure like to see Bartley start to come around. He's hit the
freshman wall, for sure.
Carlino is a key for sure, when he remembers it is a team game, not for
individuals seeking own glory...free throw shooting has improved, as shown at
San Fran, and Collingsworth needs to improve his own free throw shooting. Chris
is important to the team, as all are.
Now that Mika is back, all of the big, tall boys can now compensate for
Carlino's periodic slumps in the future. Go Cougs.
Husky,You are right he can shoot. That's not his
problem. His problem is making those shots. 39% is not good.
BlueHusky is right on. Why would anyone hate any student athlete? The headline
alone is a terrible way to start the conversation.
Yes he does have his ups/downs but when Dave Rose going to put in some bench
players. I sure like Frank Bartley IV which I thought his energy look really
good but he's not in often. Why is that? Winder did very well when Mika was
out for two games and now not much.
Moving Carlino to the bench has helped quite a bit. He's gone from having
more turnovers than points to good #'s on points and assists. Too bad Rose
didn't do it earlier.
Hate Carlino? That's a weird thing to write. That's like hating on
Come on, that is a terrible headline by your editor. Cougars don't hate
Carlino. They may get frustrated by him (or Haw's defense,
Collinsworth's jumper, Mika's inability to stay out of foul trouble,
coaches, scheduling, etc.) but we don't hate Matty. When he's on, he
is our most complete player.
One day we will all look back and wish we had spent more time enjoying the
experience that is getting to watching Matt Carlino play the game of basketball.
There is not a game he doesn't think he can win, a pass he doesn't
think he can make, or an offensive player he doesn't think he can defend.
I have seen him do things on the defensive end of the court that are simply
astounding.Collinsworth is a fine player who can do a little bit of
everything, Haws is a prolific scorer, and Mika is a FRESHMAN who's
potentially is probably unlimited. Without Carlino running the show, however,
it's a bit like a Porsche without an engine. It looks really hot, but it
doesn't go anywhere and is ultimately kind of boring. As with ALL great
point guards, you take the bad because you know the good is going to be REALLY,
REALLY good. The success BYU has and whether or not they get
into/advance in the tournament will depend on whether or not the Porsche has
it's finely tuned engine running on all cylinders. Don't hate on the
neilchr, You said it right- but for the wrong reasons! Your second
sentence says it all! HE, HE, HE, HE,HE,HE! Until he got benched, he thought he
was the only guy on the team! How in the world can you say "Without Carlino
running the show, however, it's a bit like a Porsche without an
engine." with a straight face???? It was while he was running the show we
lost 4 in a row!And now that he is on the pine we win 5. What games have
you been watching????
