Enjoy seeing this year's Y Men's volleyball team establishing
themselves so well...one thing I do not like about volleyball, however, is that
they have to hug and cheer after every won point. Such grandstanding is done by
all teams, it seems, but is such a distraction, so excessive as to be a
turnoff...in hockey they have to stop and fight every few minutes, in this
sport, its the over-the-top hurrah for us thing that gets tiresome...get on with
the match already!
DRayCheering after every point is simply a way of intimidating your
opponent and grabbing or maintaining momentum. Since most sets are decided by 2
to 5 points, one small 3 or 4 point run can be the difference between winning or
losing a set, so teams look for any advantage they can get. Referees take much
more time signaling play to resume than the 3 to 4 seconds teams spend
celebrating a point. Basketball teams do the exact same thing after every free
throw, made or not.
