I would take Walt Disney and his contribution to the entertainment industry over
Meryl Streep's contribution. She is just an actress, Disney was a
visionary whose legacy will last for hundreds of years.
Oddly it appears that Mr. Norman started out like a Lion disputing the facts
that Meryl presented, when. By the end he states that everything she stated was
actually a truth. It appears the Disney family per say just doesn't want
any negative press, even though it appears to be true by their mouth pieces own
Did Big Red even read Mr. Norman's blog? Did he read the lists of women
employed in the animation department in the 50's, including a woman heading
up one of the commercial departments at Disney studios? Did he read the lists of
the many Jewish writers, song-writers and artists employed by Disney. That this
was the end of an evolutionary growth process he does not deny. Is Big Red old
enough to have noticed that all of America was going through the same
evolutionary growth process and that Walt was ahead of, rather than behind the
curve? This a far cry from confirming that everything Meryl Streep said
was true. Nothing she said was true. If you know what truth is anyway. Saying
that the Disney family just doesn't want any negative press is a complete
distortion. They don't want the truth distorted by Meryl Streep's own
distorted lens. Sometimes when you look through a distorted lens at a good and
beautiful thing, you see something ugly instead. The fault is in the lens.
I am a big fan of Disney Animation/Walt Disney movies. Meryl Streep is not just
an actress , she has been in the film making Industry for years. She makes a
vaild point about Walt Disney movies. The black person in Walt Disney is
always the villian. Pocotanus, she had a perfect figure and was a servant to
John Smith. The Pocotanus story is nothing like the movie .Beauty and the Beast,
well he was an abusive animal to Beauty.I did a gender related paper at a
Univeristy in a Western country on Walt disney movies. I was wearing rose tinted
glasses at the time, thinking Walt Disney movies are magical and fun. After completing the gender related paper, I could see the stero types on
particular races and gender Walt Disney Movies were portraying.I feel
Meryl Streep is just saying out loud , how other groups feel about Walt Disney
and the movies/animation he has created. As for Walt Disney family, they are
just protecting their mass fortune and dignity of their father legacy.
I like Beauty and the Beast. Geez, it's a fairy tale.
Blaming Disney for sexism is like blaming Jefferson for slavery. Whether the man
was truly a sexist or not would have been relative to the time and facts about
his life that none of us will ever know. Just because he didn't treat
women's roles in business like we do today doesn't make him a
sexist.Even then, just because it became popular to accept women in
the workplace didn't mean it should have been. The LDS Church opposed the
ERA for good reason. We are known for being incredibly supportive of
women's involvement in society, the world, home, etc... much more so than
those who simply wanted to put women to work and end the discussion there.Norman was right about one thing for sure...How could anyone
make statements about someone they've never met?
This is both laughable and disgusting. Hollywood attempting to label Walt
Disney. Go figure. Those of us old enough to remember watching and listening to
Walt Disney on TV judge the man on his actions and his business. Every one of
Walt's early Disney movies held women in high esteem from Mary Poppins to
Swiss Family Robinson. Listening to Hollywood bark out anything these days is
both nauseating and so blatantly hypocritical. Holy cow - take a visit to
Disneyland and do come away thinking...wow that Walt Disney sure was a sexist
man? Honestly this garbage from morally challenged Hollywood is just so much
"sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal".
I enjoyed Disney cartoons when I was little; not so much now as I have matured,
Walt is long dead, and the "studios" now seem just to crank out insipid
and pc cartoons and films.Disney the man? I did not expect him to
be perfect, nor do I think it wise to judge by modern standards that might in
their turn be popularly decried in future times. I do not know a whole lot about
him but he sounds pretty much like many people of his time. His productions are
viewed nostalgically because of their perceived relative innocence.
This is where liberals get the often justified label of “smug
elitists.” Before we hurl too many rocks through the windows
of historical glass houses, we may want to ask how history might judge us by a
standard yet unknown. Would Ms. Streep like to be remembered solely
for, say, some (misguided by the standards of 2100) political views or would she
prefer people remember both her body of work and her as a whole, complex,
amazing but flawed person?
Regardless of what the truth is on Walt Disney, it was in appallingly bad taste
for Meryl Streep to use the occasion to malign Disney with disputed allegations
that are old stuff. Why dredge up the past when the evening’s attention
properly belonged on Emma Thompson as the award recipient? Not that
this incident represents anything new. For an award presenter to use the
occasion to steal the spotlight by making a controversial statement has become
all too common at awards ceremonies these days.
Streep is a good actress and an incredibly poor historian. Her activism has
taken over her common sense of humanity.
What the?...Let's examine the evidence.Snow White,
Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland, Little
Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, Lilo, Mulan,
Brave, Frozen, Brave young women, faces thei
inner-most fears, over coming seemingly extreme obstacles, Ya,
that Walt Disney -- How dare he build an entire Industry around sexism
Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland,
Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, Lilo,
Mulan, Brave, FrozenBut why are most of them
motherless? What was it with Disney that the heroines had to have a stepmother
or no mother at all?
When Seth MacFarlane criticizes Walt, its funny as there is an element of truth
A naive, pollyanna, like defense of the Disney empire in Utah? I am shocked!?
re:Hank PymSo what's your point?? Do you have evidence of
sexism from Walt Disney or not? Do tell. Every post here gave evidence that Walt
was anything BUT a sexist man so I expect you have something else to offer other
than you hate everything wholesome and decent like most liberals?
