And yet we'll hear all the hype in a few years when BYU lands the next Ben
Olson or Jake Heaps.
Good article. Hype does not a great player make. Where was Ziggy and Van Noy
ranked? How about Alex Smith? Young? Detmer? McMahon?Making the jump
from HS to College is huge. College to Pros? Bigger. Lots of posters on this
site count stars as if they were meaningful.Jake Heaps was a sad
story, from his signing press conference to his classless departure. I
don't wish him ill, but I do believe we have to earn our stripes. Heaps was
anointed by the press and circumstances put him in the game way too early.Still, I wish no player ill. We all love to see our players succeed.
I sure enjoy the 'local player' updates.
I really enjoyed the article. What seems to make some players great is who they
play with and who they play against and who is in front of them on the depth
chart. There are also a lot of character qualities like leadership that are hard
to quantify. I think the problem with many of these internet rating services is
that they rely solely on statistics and anecdotal material from local sports
writers. They're not really scouting anyone to see how they would actually
perform at the next level. We keep falling for it though. As signing
day approaches fans will crow about how their team just landed some "number
one rated player" who hasn't played a snap but is a front runner for
the Heisman Trophy according to scout.com.
I can't wait until we land another bigtime QB at BYU!
BYU already has a big time QB. Taysom Hill had an outstanding sophomore year and
should only get better in the next couple of years.
Heaps was awful at Kansas this year, no way to sugar coat it.
This is the best article for a stud quarterback to red shirt one year and then
be the backup for the next year. Play two or three years after that. Kids get
pushed to early.
I think that BYU is in a relatively good QB situation right now. We need to
improve our line, and I think that will come with time. We also desperately need
some DBs that can stay healthy.
Hope Heaps gets a good education at Kansas. He's going to have to excel in
something else besides football.
