Great game Utah! Even with a loss, I think we can all agree that Utah is on its way back.

    Go UTES!

BYU and Utah in overtime. Lucky Ducks!

Awesome game. Ducks shoot 38% and terrible at the line - shouldn't have got the "W". utah couldn't hang on to the ball when it counted. mediocre performance. couldn't score 70 with 5 extra minutes.

The Utes are back and so is the crowd. Disappointing loss but WOW, what a game!

    Well done, Utes...well done indeed!!

Total heartbreak! Our Utes are going to win a lot of games this year!

    GO UTES!!!

What a wild finish. Disappointed with the result, but even more excited about this season! Difference in the game to me was Oregon's 3 point shooting in the first half. It kept them in the game in the first half, and allowed things to open up inside in the second.

Two very good defenses in this game. Oregon should contend for 2nd place in the regular season, and has as good a chance as any to knock off UA in Vegas. Utah will hopefully finish with a winning conference record, especially if they keep playing the way they did tonight.

Tough loss. I was pulling for the Utes. They've proven they're for real tonight. The Utes earned my respect tonight, even though Chris B hasn't yet.

But to BYU critics, the Utes still don't have any more conference wins than BYU has. Plus, BYU doesn't yet have any home court conference losses.

Both teams losses to Oregon were eerily similar... with both losing in OT after leading most of their games. Neither will win their respective conferences. But both will rebound and do decently.

Tators, nice comment. I was thinking kind of the same thing, I'm sure a lot of people were when it went into OT. You could tell the guys had to be gassed near the end, as open jumpers couldn't quite go down late. Unfortunate to see Taylor have on off night, he's usually automatic on open 3's.

Nice game Utah. It's exciting to see the Utes performing so well. I think this is going to be the surprise team of the PAC12...weren't they picked to finish 10th or something? In the words of Lee Corso, "not so fast"! Athletic guards who defend well and nice length in the front court...good looking team on the hill this year.

It was right there . . . tough way to lose on a turnover and breakaway dunk.

The Utes should be proud of the way they played tonight. They are a few points away from being 13 - 0.

    "couldn't score 70 with 5 extra minutes."

Well, maybe because in this game there was some defense actually being played, unlike, in another game...

Yep I will admit it - the best college basketball team in the state, by far, are the Utes. So their non-conference schedule was weakest in all the land - they are legit!

They lost the game tonight on a few minor errors that Coach K will rectify - something that my team down south's coach seems incapable of doing.

  • GoRed WEST VALLEY CITY, UT
    Jan. 2, 2014 11:39 p.m.

Just a few comments here. What a great atmosphere tonight. It appeared to be a sellout. I could only see a few rows empty at the very top of the west end of the arena. It reminded me a lot of the games during the 90's. Coach K is doing a fantastic job with the program, especially considering the disaster he inherited from the former coach.

The game was a hearbreak. Utah dictated the tempo all night. Oregon was fortunate to just hang around. But when it mattered most, they came through. Hats off to them.

As to our team, I really like our core players. We have three solid post players in Lenz, Olsen, and especially Bachinsky, who is becoming a real force. Taylor is playing the point with a lot of poise and confidence, and Tucker is a good complement to him. But our fortunes this year lie in Loveridge's and Wright's hands. Loveridge is solid, and Wright has unbelievable moves around the basket. I think we'll be very competitive in the challenging PAC 12.

    Go Utes!!

Tough way to lose, but the atmosphere was incredible. It's been a long time since I've heard the Huntsman get that loud. Lets bounce back on Saturday.

Fabulous game, great atmosphere, good to see the Utes playing well enough to nearly beat a really quality opponent. Feels a bit like the football season at times though...close but not good enough.

Should have won it in regulation and what a heartbreaker at the end. Coach K. is doing a great job on the hill and is a class act. He was so positive in his postgame comments. If this team can get some signature wins and beat teams they should beat, they could be looking at a tourney berth in March.

Thanks to the BYU fans for keeping it classy with the comments.

Lots of moral victories tonight for ute fans but still a loss in the standings.

This will be an interesting season. Can they ride the pre season confidence into conference play or will the utes of yesteryears return?

  • poyman Lincoln City, OR
    Jan. 3, 2014 1:47 a.m.

Didn't get to see the game but it reads like Utah could and probably should have beaten the Ducks... Tough way to lose and I feel badly for Bachynski...

The utes have surprised me this year... They are honestly playing far better than what I would have expected... However, they have only played one game out of the confines of the HC so the true test of whether or not they are for real is actually about to begin... A trip to the Washington schools however, looks like a good place to start... I think that both Washington and WSU are down from a year ago and they weren't very far up then.

Hopefully your team can shake this off and pick it up hard next week... Good luck with the Beavers... Looks like they gave Colorado a bit of a game tonight.

We would of won them but the dang refs wouldnt call pass interfearance on the pass to Loveridge. Still what we did on our home court proves we have a legit shot to go to the sweet 16 in march madness!

To the most of the coug fans, thanks for contributing to the board, this is what the board should be, not the petty bickering that had evolved.

Tough loss for the Utes. Coming into it, I really thought they would win this one.

Now the Utes have to bounce back and beat OSU. Can't start the season 0-2 at home.

Not a Ute fan, but I have to give Coach K credit for the "cupcake" preseason schedule strategy. It did exactly what it was intended to do; give his team some much needed confidence after a few miserable years. I'll be watching to see how the Utes do the rest of the way, but right now, the strategy seems to have worked perfectly.

The Cougars, however, seem to have burned themselves out playing a difficult preseason schedule. The idea here was to play tougher teams with the hope that they could beat a few and that it would better prepare them for Conference play. This strategy seems to have backfired. The Cougars look tired and are playing with no confidence or teamwork. They are a young team and are having to develop with a great deal of pressure on them, whereas the Utes have developed with little pressure due to low expectations.

    Interesting contrast.

Nice couple of stories on Ute basketball on ESPN. NCAAM section has a cover story "Utah Utes've come a long way, baby" -- starting to get some national attention. Well done, Utes! Keep it up!!

Great win by the Ducks. For a team that scores 90+ pts a game, they came out and found a way to get the W.

It was not a tough way to lose.

It was an awesome way to lose. Nothing to hang your head over..up to the lat 0.6 seconds in overtime.

I confess, I didn't expect so much from the Utes. I figured Oregon would have regrouped after BYU or that if Utah did well, than BYU and Utah proved Oregon is overrated.

No way. Oregon's Dotson and Armadi are the real thing and fun to watch. I just think Utah plays better as a team. Shout out to you Coach K!

It was an awesome game! Was a bit shocked about the finish but all in all the guys played really hard and kept a very good offensive team out of their game. The rest of the season will be fun to watch.

"I have never seen a group of fans so happy about a loss"

It's because despite having a bad night from the field the Utes still had a shot. They played TEAM basketball--not run and miss, with no assists.

Even though Oregon has to now play the single toughest road game on the PAC-12 schedule, Coors Events Center in Boulder, CO, they get a bit of a break in having nearly 3 full days to recover. The Utes have only 40 hours to recover from an agonizing, exhausting, physical overtime game before Oregon State and two of the conference's top scorers, Roberto Nelson and Devon Collier, come in. The guys need a win Saturday, can't start conference 0-2 going into a road stretch.

I don't know how many wins Utah might accumulate this year in conference but this Ute fan is seeing some light break through the windows of doldrum. It has been way too long since Utah was relevant, but the way up from the abysmal seasons recently has been greatly accelerated by Coach K and the young nucleus on the current roster.

Nice game. It shouldn't do too much to put a dent in the team's confidence. Most important thing is to stay focused and take care of OSU.

It's clear there's been significant improvement year over year, but it won't be clear just how much until the team gets on the road. With only one away game so far assessing real improvement will have to wait until deep into the conference schedule. At this point it's like trying to measure the academic success of a home-schooled student.

Great to see some life in the HC. Hopefully the fans will stick with it when the inevitable bumps in the road come along.

"Yep I will admit it - the best college basketball team in the state, by far, are the Utes. So their non-conference schedule was weakest in all the land - they are legit!"

That's ludicrous. Check out how many tough games BYU played. BYU won more of those games than utah has played. utah lost both of those games. Put utah in BYU's schedule and they will lose just as many. I'd love to see utah go on the road and play three undefeated top 25 teams and see how they fare. Their WEAK schedule is going to hurt them, especially on the road.

"That's ludicrous. Check out how many tough games BYU played. BYU won more of those games than utah has played."

Check out the weak teams BYU's lost to versus Utah not losing to any weak teams. Yes, Stanford and Texas are probably better wins than BYU, but Boise State is nowhere near as bad of a loss as PEPPERDINE or LMU.

  • pocyUte Pocatello, ID
    Jan. 4, 2014 11:54 a.m.

    RR

a 17 point win should be enough to convince most people that one team is better. If that doesn't do it, then 11-2 vs 8-7 (including that 17 point beat down and 2 straight losses to Loyola and Pepperdine )should do it, if that doesn't do it, I don't know what will.

That's ok, we on this board know who the best team in the state is, and that team is Utah.
