My former bishop is a Ute fan. When BYU was dominating the U in sports a while
back, he would come to church depressed and miserable. I would constantly
remind him that the Church was true and the Lord loved BYU more. Why
wouldn't He, it's His university. One day he told me before
a BYU/Utah game, he was going to pray for BYU and not for the U. A convert had
been won from the dark/red side. I rejoiced.BYU lost.Next day in church, he was happy and elated. He said that stability,
wholesomeness, and balance had been restored to the universe. The true order
have sports was once again upon the earth."But Bishop, you
prayed for BYU and the Lord didn't answer your prayer. You must not be a
very righteous bishop.""My son, my little lamb, the Lord did
answer my prayer. I said I prayed for BYU and I did. I prayed that they will
lose and my prayer was answered. My son, you have much repenting to do."What a terrible bishop, but he was one of the best I ever had.
I think BYU represents what the church is about, faith, hope, charity,
tradition, honor, spirit. are we the only school to have a spiritual meeting,
firesides, the day before? the standards are high; morally and academic. Higher
than Utah or Utah state and the rest of the colleges in the country. so
individuals playing for BYU are held to a higher standard in effect representing
what the church stands for even though some are not LDS. why would faithful LDS
root against BYU. if all the top LDS athletes came to BYU in all sports what a
demonstration of power and strength. Football and basketball would be in top 10
every year and challenging for a national championship. it would be a sight to
behold. those members who root against BYU are not rooting for the church to
show case their talents and desire BYU to play poor and not to be successful.
BYU teams are not perfect and make mistakes. BYU and the church are interwoven
never to be separate.
The Church supports BYU with tithing of every tithing paying member, while the
state supports the other schools with everyone's tax money...so which
school should a good Bishop support? Perhaps contrary Bishops are called to
test us our faith and endurance, just like BYU losses are? It is not easy being
a BYU fan nowadays, but a good Scout is loyal, and a true blue Cougar fan; all
other Scouts should be, and are in need of being rescued.
I consider myself a person that strives to be a good Latter-day Saint, and at
times I have been quite outspoken about what I believe...to the point that some
of my commentaries have been canceled for being too ferverous...It
is not a sin to be against BYU in sports. I actually support them but like the
bishop mentioned in the first comment, root against BYU when they play Utah.
