Do an internet search for the full content of his comments. They were more
offensive than the DesNews story would lead you to believe. If, in
the course of my employment, I said something offensive to my boss, my boss
would have the right to sanction me. A&E has the same right to put this guy
on leave that BYU had to fire the professor who wrote a letter to the editor in
favor of same-sex marriage.
Freedom of speech does not mean you are immune from the consequences of speech.
Employers fire employees who have said stupid things that are an embarrassment
to the employer all the time.Mr. Roberson was not jailed or fined
for expressing himself. There is no First Amendment issue here.He
was fired because his employers knew his words would hurt their brand and drive
While I agree that we all need to find better ways of dealing with disagreements
on our society and think Phil is probably not a bad guy I think acknowledging
the historical backdrop would be a good first step . Within the last 100 years
has suffered through forced castration, forced lobotomies, shock therapy,
incarceration, institutionalization, and being rounded up and killed In Gas
chambers by western countries and those committing these acts used their
religious beliefs to justify their behaviors.
The author of this letter is totally right. We all have a right to express our
opinion. Phil Robertson expressed his opinion in a public way and other's
have expressed their opinion - either in support or disgust - in the same way.
A&E television has suspended Mr. Robertson for his remarks and has disavowed
any association with those remarks. So let's be honest. There
are people all over this country who disagree in the issues of homosexuality.
Phil Robertson is just one of them. What has blown this expression of opinion
way, way out of preportion is the business decision of a television network to
disassociate itself with someone who expressed an opinion that they think will
hurt their network ratings, their business. That's all. Mr. Robertson,
being an intelligent person, must have known that expressing his opinion in such
a public way could potentially cause a firestorm of disagreement. I'm
assuming he knew the potential consequences. But I'm thinking he also
knows that in the end, his fame will be even greater for this calculated
comment. Let's stop assuming there is anything other than business
involved in this controversy.
The internet dialogue out there does little to support the concept of
accountability because a lot of people don't understand it. Do what you
want to do, and say what you want to say, but please don't ask to be free
of any consequences for it. I hope the "Duck Dynasty" guy isn't
asking for that. Further, A&E has every right to make the business decisions
they believe are appropriate, and the consequences of what they do will be
theirs to own as well. For the most part I don't take my entertainment from
A&E. I never take my entertainment from Duck Dynasty or any other so called
reality show, and I would never take my theology from them. Freedom of religion
and freedom of speech include the right to be obnoxious and/or ignorant.
Don't complain if others respond in an unpleasant way.
He has a master’s degree? Wow, now I think he is even more of a backwards
hillbilly. But the letter writer is right, people our free to express
their opinions whenever they like. And we are free to heap scorn on them if they
deserve it, which in this case they do. And… employers are
free to employ or not whomever they wish.Freedom… what a
Several years back the Dixie Chicks made some offensdive comments about
President Bush. For this they were roundly condemned by conservatives and radio
stations all over the country blacklisted them and refused to play their music.
Very recently Martin Bashir was forced to resign his position at MSNBC for
making offensive remarks about Sarah Palin. In this case it was also
conservatives who were calling for his head. All Americas have the
right of free speech, the government cannot prevent us from saying what we want.
All private corporations also have the right to discipline employees for
bringing the opprobrium of the public down on their heads. Liberals
who were outraged at the treatment of Bashir and the Dixie Chicks should be
supporting Robertson. Conservatives who support Robertson should also have
supported Bashir and the Dixie Chicks. If you support one side, but not the
other, you are being a hypocrite.
I listened to several comments from the Gay community over the last few days.ALL of them said A&E was wrong to suspend him, He is entitled
to think and believe whatever he wants.Free speech means just that - Free
speech. So -- who's really to blame, The Gay community who
supports Phil's right to Free Speech, orThe network for taking
it upon themselves and suspending him?
Just because we have freedom of speech, we shouldn't use it improperly.Almost everything we see and hear on the media is scripted, edited, well
considered and has a purpose. Whether I agree or disagree, I try to see the
purpose and find the real meaning of the communication. My wife faults me for
this. I object to the covert advertising of religion or other
controversial things. And when an august personality of the media, in the public
square, seeks to campaign either for or against issues that needlessly divide
our citizens, I feel the freedom of speech has be used improperly. I am a fan of freedom of religion for individuals. I am not a fan of freedom
of religion for churches or any other organized group.
Phil wasn't denied his right to free speech. GQ happily gave him a stage on
which to speak and he is certainly entitled to say what he wants there. Of
course, for reasons beyond understanding, he is something of a public figure, so
he has no right to expect immunity from reaction to his comments. What's
more, his employer obviously has a lot of skin in the game, and clearly there is
some sort of agreement with A&E as to what the 'dynasty' people
are allowed to say. You can sense it when you watch the show. Personally, I
think Phil got tired of having to be restrained. Or maybe just tired of living
with people sticking a camera in his face all the time. I know that would get to
me. I believe Phil wanted the results he's getting here, and good on him.
Why would such an educated person be so obsessed with people's private
parts and use such graphic, insensitive, incendiary language? Why
would such an avowed Christian be so obsessed with other people's sex
Everyone has the right to express their opinions, and everyone has the right to
display bad manners, but in both cases those doing so must also be expected to
take the consequences. For some reason we have come to believe that we are
required accept actions and words that are rude, without consequences. This has
nothing to do with First Amendment Rights of Freedom of Speech. Suppression of
Freedom of Speech is a government action. Political correctness is used to
suppress opinion, not being forced by government.
The Government has done nothing, and will do nothing to Phil Robertson. His
is not going to jail, He is not being fined.Everything BAD
happening to him, and this censorship...is from the CORPORATION he
works for.Conservatives will cheer Corporations, and yet once
again it is Corporations being responsible for his "Free Speech" being
stifled. When Obama sends him to the gulag for his rant - then call
me.[but somehow -- I believe the tin-foiled hat party will figure a
secret cabal of Democrats, secretly trying to destroy America - are behind
this....like they did with AG John Swallow.]
One poster said that the gay community supported Robertson's right to speak
and that A&E was wrong when Robertson was suspended.Read the
comments to in the Deseret News, not just on this thread, but on all threads
concerning Robertson, gay marriage, same-sex sex, and what the gay community is
really saying.Robertson has been vilified by the gay community.
Robertson has been vilified by the press. Robertson has been vilified by those
who think that their right to speak freely about same-sex sex supersedes
Robertson's right to speak freely about same-sex sex.Robertson
spoke bluntly about same-sex sex and the consequences, as he saw it, of those
who practice same-sex sex.A&E threw him off the show and did
Robertson a great favor. His message is now being sent all over the world. The entire adult world knows that God made man and woman different for a
purpose. The entire world has been fed a line by the gay community for years.
Robertson plainly refuted the gay propaganda. He doesn't need A&E.
A&E needs him.
I can be fired in 29 states for being gay. But he should
'not' be fired from his job, for claiming I am going to burn in hell
for being gay. The double standard marches on. Freedom
of speech? Is not freedom from criticism.
The God of the natural world only gave the life that he created one commandment,
Survive. It needed no messenger or book, it is written in the cells of every
living thing. I believe that everything after that is the result of natural
selection. There are some people in this nation with the agenda to
divide and confuse people and they do that by promoting divisive and
controversial problems for people. The people responsible for the words of the
media sometimes have ulterior motives for the script that they put out.
If the motive was to promote religion, it is contrary to the notion
of freedom of religion for individuals. In any case, it is the
owners/managers of the A&E who are responsible.
Phil Robertson was the only one discriminated against here...he lost his gig
Roland Kayser,The Dixie Chicks situation was a little different than this
one. Their comments offended most of their FANS (Country Music fans are very
patriotic and were very offended by their comments that to them sounded
anti-American at a very vulnerable time for America). I doubt many Duck Dynasty
fans were offended by the comments.I think it's one thing when
you make comments that offend most of your fans. They have a right to turn on
them when they offend their fans. DD fans were not offended. Some very vocal
OUTSIDERS were offended... and that forced the network to take this action (not
DD fans).Radio Stations didn't bench the Dixie Chicks. It was
their fan's response to what they said.IF Duck Dynasty fans
were offended by the comments and didn't want to watch them anymore... that
would be different. THAT is what happened in the Dixie Chicks case.
Roland baby, the Dixie Chicks never got fired from anything. Everyone thinks
this Robertson guy is some kind of hick because he looks like the ZZ Top guys
and speaks with an accent.I never liked the Dixie Chicks anyway. I
voted against them with my wallet.
Phil wanted out of the whole contrived mess of Duck Dynasty. He knew
exactly what to say to make that happen. He has made more than enough
money to support his life style. His family will continue to make
money off the A&E production.Attributing this episode to
anything more than that is political/culture war grandstanding.
Where does his religion come into play with regards to his comments about black
people being better off under back in the Jim Crow era?
Kalindra,Re: "If, in the course of my employment, I said something
offensive to my boss, my boss would have the right to sanction me"...His comments were not made to his boss. His comments were not in the
context of his employment... you are setting up an apples to oranges comparison
in your comment. If you said something offensive to your boss you
would possibly be fired (SOME bosses can take it, they can allow you to have an
opinion they don't like). But he said nothing to his boss, and he
didn't try to offend his boss.If you're going to setup a
pretend strawman situation to illustrate your point... at least make it a
Most of these anti-Robertson comments are deceptive. I have yet to hear any
conservative say they didn't think A&E had a right to do what they did.
I have yet to hear conservatives tell anyone that they are wrong to stop
watching Duck Dynasty if they don't like what he said. Thus, is it
irrelevant that many conservatives rejected the Dixie Chicks. The
fact is, most people respect A&E's right to do what they want. But
A&E has to accept the consequences of their transparent decision. They channel that makes money exploiting people like the Robertsons should not
be pretending they didn't know what they were like. They are not fooling
More proof that religion poisons everything it touches.
