The Cougs got outplayed in this one, especially by Williams who lit us up. We
didn't need more offense, we needed a great on the ball defender like Emery
or Abouo. I would have like to see us adjust our defense to maybe a box and 1,
with Winder or Bartley glued to Williams.
No doubt about it, UMass was on fire. Hard to win against a team where it seems
everything they throw up goes in. The lobs in the lane and the three pointers
were numerous.Cougars were off, seemed confused on how to get things
going. Too bad the defense didn't change up more often, that seemed to
bring the Minutemen off balance and brought some well needed turnovers.Cougars need more work but this is a strong team. Keep it up guys!Go Cougars!
I think the Cougars played well. UMass took shots that any opposing coach would
want them taking (floaters from the free-throw line over 6-11 guys) but they
were hitting pretty much everything. I was surprised with their depth. I expect
them to make lots of noise this year. Hopefully the Cougs learn from this and be
better for it come conference time.
@sammygNot a strong BYU team. Too much ( I need to get points
players )again. Watched them play. Too many shooters. Not strong enough in the
paint and can't rebound. And, the Refs were really unfair again. Things are
not looking good for the game against UTAH. Oh my.
BYU actually got more points that UMass in the 2nd half, but it was only a
couple points and not enough to make up for the first half 11 point deficit. On the bright side BYU is a better team this year than I had expected!
Without Davies I didn't expect them to be as good as last year, but I think
this year's team is better. Coach Rose and the assistant coaches have done
a good job of adjusting BYU's game to the current talent, now the team just
needs to keep improving.Go Cougars!
Nah, Saturday the 14th will go the way it should... The Cougars will come away
with a convincing win... The only losses have been to teams that haven't
lost yet in any case... Many of the wins have been against teams that also
haven't lost since.... I don't know how you can call this team
'weak'. It is just delightful as all get out that 95 points were
scored against the #1 RPI team in the country... Not some middle of the who they
heck are they NAIA pack. Boise State was the first team with a pulse and the
outcome has been realized... Utes are tougher than they have been since 2009...
But not tough enough to pull the upset... Losing is never fun, but I am just
thrilled at such a great game so far away from home. Cougars, hold your heads up
high and smile all the while... Things are going to continue to improve and
these 'narrow' losses to ranked teams will be eliminated, or someone
down the road will help knock off the hardest battles and make the deep run even
Liked the effortAustin and Collinsworth seemed to contribute very
little! Haws, Bartley, Mika, and Carlino played solid games.Did not
like the technical fouls called after Haws got mugged in the first half and
thought that was a key factor in the game.Otherwise, BYU must figure
out how to stop penetration! UMASS is very good, however, and definitely was
the better team!
I wish the best to BYU this season, but this just proves again that they are a
weak team vs. quality competition. So many Y fans get delirious after we beat a
few teams in the MC but we always seem to choke vs. the good teams (i.e. anyone
in the top 25). On both football and basketball we need to play well vs. this
level of competition before we go thinking we are top tier. We haven't
earned anything yet.
Oakland for life: Are you kidding? The Utes are an improved team, but they
aren't that improved. The cougs will have played four ranked opponents by
the time they play the Utes. Who will the Utes have played and beaten?
The game against Utah should be very interesting. Utah has an overabundance of
wing players that are long, athletic, can easily switch and cover in defending,
and a couple of very, very good players: Jordan Loveridge and Delon Wright. Wright in particular should be a serious matchup problem for BYU because
of his length and athleticism, overall game, ability to break down defenses off
the dribble and deliver easy opportunities for the Utah bigs. He plays in the
summer with his older brother, who plays for the TrailBlazers in the NBA, so has
a lot of experience playing with NBA players, and it shows. He's been a
"stat sheet stuffer" so far, today scoring 23, with 12 assists, 6
rebounds and a couple of steals. Against Boise it was 15 points, 12 rebounds, 7
assists and 5 steals.I don't see Utah having trouble containing
the BYU long game, but BYU has good players at the bigs, and Utah's bigs
will need to play well.
Umass is the better team and as byu fans have been saying, Playing ranked teams
doesn't count for anything if all you so is lose. 3 games
against ranked teams. 3 losses. Not what a tournament worthy team would do.
I think that this game will help the Cougs down the road... On
Defense, I think Rose saw that they need to have a variation or two to our
zone... It's vulnerable to the High Post and wing penetration. We
don't have enough quality Bigs to absorb the fouls that can come with a
High Post attack... A 1-3-1 probably would have been a nice change up now and
then to slow it down... Aman-to-man would also help once in awhile to break up
the rhythm. On Offense we need to focus more on our half court
schemes... We're great at transition but even when you are great you have
to be able to pull it back once in awhile and execute an effective inside-out
Offense... If we don't have a break we need to make sure that Mika touches
the ball inside and we need to get Austin so he is comfortable rotating in and
out with Mika at the High and Low Post... Austin has a good Mid Range and 3
point shot... He needs some confidence and encouragement to take them when
he's open (and he's open a lot).
Maybe one of the worst games that I have seen Collinsworth play in his one and a
third seasons as a Cougar... Not a wise move to drive into the trees when
you're not as quick... Take the openings when you get them not when you
don't have them... I was embarrassed for him on a couble of drives...
Hate to talk about Officiating... But once again it was horrid... I recorded the
game and have played back the incident with Haws and Putney of UMass about 10
times and I am still scratching my head... BYU has the ball and they are down by
4 with about 8Minutes to go in the first half... Haws is red hot... He attempts
to rub his man off on a Mika screen and the Putney kid basically puts an elbow
to to Haws's head and clothes lines him to the ground and then begins to
step on him... Haws pushes Putney's negs away so that he doesn't get
stepped on and he does it in away that delivers the message that he is
frustrated... Putney then starts screaming at the Officials and pointing at
Haws... Mika comes to protect Haws as he is on the floor, and their
5'7" guard Williams looks like he takes a half swing at Mika...Interpretation... 2 Techs in the Cougs and one Tech on UMass... UMass
shoots 2 free throws and gets the ball... And that was the turning point in the
game. UMass didn't need the help, they probably would have won anyway.
1. BYU will be fine once they return to the friendly confines of the WCC.
Playing good teams is hard as the 0-3 record against ranked would prove out.2. There is no D in either BYU or COUGAR or HAWS or ROSE.3. Talking
bad about Utah won't change what type of a team BYU is.
Another tough game and yet again another disappointing setback for the Cougars!
I love the excitement and the promise of this year's squad but I'm
still longing for better results against the premier competition in the nation.
And I wouldn't underestimate the rising Utes either! They are making some
serious noises no matter the competition and I think the Cougars better not look
past them. It would be a serious mistake that would come back and bite us just
like in f/b. That my fellow fans, would just be too much for me to stomach!Go Cougars! Go Aggies! And go Utes until we meet on the hardwood!
I've noticed the officiating is only bad when BYU loses. Now that's
@spokanneute...Another snide observation from ute troll from Gonzaga
land... Did you even watch the game??? I'm guessing not, but let's say
that you did... What was your interpretation of the incident that included a
clothesline knock down on Haws by the kid from UMass (Putney)??? I'm
curious as to how you saw it after whining an entire year about Kaufusi's
physical play against Gonzaga at the MC?
poyman,You're right, Haws got fouled on that play. However, if
he hadn't swiped with his leg at the defender after the play was over he
could have avoided the technical foul.If you have ever played
competitive basketball you probably understand that you can't react to hard
fouls. Haws reacted and got the T
Oh u90... I have played and coached basketball at several levels during my life
including Division 1 and HS 5A Varsity... and won a handful of Conference
Championships (but I'm long since retired now)... I don't think any
qualifications are needed however, to know that this incident was poorly handled
by the Officials... Assuming you even watched the game you can see
that when Putney continued to trip on Haws and looked as though he was going to
fall on Haws that that is when Haws kicked his feet out and used his hands to
push Putney's legs away... You call that "Retaliation", (probably
because you are a ute troll) I call it "self-defense" to prevent
injury... And, I dare say that if you were purposely elbowed or clotheslined to
the floor you would have had the same reaction , as would I or anyone else...The proper call should have been a Flagrant 1 (and possibly an F-2)
against Putney, and canceling Technical Fouls against Williams of UMass and
either Haws or Mika (although I don't think that either Coug player really
earned one after reviewing the play multiple times on my trusty DVR.
PoymanCouldn't agree with you more, still scratching my head
over that call.Don't bother to ask a Ute for an objective
opinion on a BYU play. Total waste of time.
I just can not believe that it is not butter! It's Parkay!
