I'll take a 10% chance of beating a powerhouse team over a 90% chance of beating a division II team on senior day, ANY DAY!

Since Utah beat Stanford, and Virginia(still only 1 division 1 win), I figure neither these games are 100%.

    Go Utes!

"Utah defensive line is one of the best in the country"

    Per the commentators

And Oregon, in RARE form, kicks field goal on 4th and 2. Shows the respect Oregon has for Utah.

So far the only reason Utah's move to the PAC has been good has been the money. Regarding the level of play they are putting out, they should have stayed in the MWC. Just sayin'.

Well, credit the utes for hanging for a half, but other teams have hung with Oregon for a half...Washington, UCLA. In the end Oregon takes teams to the woodshed in the second half. Lotta heart Utah, very impressed with the utes defense. Oregon is just too good a team in the end for most teams. Good luck against WSU and Colorado to get bowl eligible.

  • mindgames Aurora, CO
    Nov. 16, 2013 4:57 p.m.

Moral victories are achieved by teams that think halftime scores mean things are good. Losing by 30 is as close to a moral victory Utah has.

And now Washington State and Colorado are looking like a 6-6 season is impossible.

I'm surprised Oregon isn't doing what they usually do. Mariota out of the game and 2nd stringers in on defense, giving the utes some cosmetic love. I think this is the first time I've seen Oregon lay off and do the classy thing when they're ONLY up by 30.

  • BYU9293 Clinton, UT
    Nov. 16, 2013 5:21 p.m.

It would be funny but you Ute fans are so illogical and ignorant, meaning uninformed, that it is just sad. Utah defense is pretty good, but do you think maybe Mariotta's injury has something to do with the low rushing yards. Also, Chris B, the BYU score was 49-3 at the half and the starters on offense were already out of the game before halftime. Who cares how many yards rushing Idaho State had. Also, you played Weber State earlier this year, so the Utes can't say much about playing a 1AA team...not Division II, by the way. I just wish you guys would learn a little about football. You don't even know the proper classifications for teams. The bottom line is you still got crushed by Oregon and now have no chance at a bowl game. Mark it down, no matter what happens in the next 2 weeks, Utes are not going bowling.

It was very comical reading all of these posts early on and then see the u fans just disappear
about the time the team decided to disappear.
But I have to admit I predicted the Ducks by 50 and they only won by 30,(with their 2nd string) so I will eat my humble pie but will save it for the bowl season while I am watching the Cougars play their bowl game.

Oregon usually doesn't call off the dogs because they're trying to influence polls and computers to try to get into the BCS championship game. With that hope gone for this year, they started slow, hit their stride and then put it back in neutral at the end.

Once again the Utes show they aren't for real and can't compete in the PAC 12. It's almost a certainty that they won't go bowling again. The lack of a quality D1 QB has been exploited. Let's see if I can keep this straight; Utah has an injured qb and loses 4 straight or was it 5?
Oregon has and injured qb and the PULVERIZE the utes by 30. I guess that describes the difference between a real pac qb and what u has.

  • toosmartforyou Farmington, UT
    Nov. 16, 2013 7:26 p.m.

I admit I was wrong. I said it would take Utah 3 seasons to win 10 PAC 12 Conference games. Right now they have a total of 8 victories (7 at the end of last season) and it looks likely that they will need 4 seasons unless somehow they defeat both Washington State and Colorado. That scenario is looking pretty slim right now, just like going to a bowl game this year. And that solitary win is by a team that is supposedly better than last year's squad.

Imagine, Ute partisans actually thought they could beat Oregon at home after the Ducks lost last week and were plenty motivated.

Gotta love this PAC 12 Basement! That's why they were invited----the conference needed a different doormat.

  • Utes Fan Salt Lake City, UT

Put things in perspective. Here are the losses by all teams this year to Oregon:

    Nicholls lost by 63
    Virginia lost by 49
    Tennessee lost by 45
    California lost by 39
    Colorado lost by 41
    Washington lost by 21
    Washington State lost by 24
    UCLA lost by 28
    Utah lost by 23

Other than Stanford, Oregon has PULVERIZED every team they have played. Utah's performance, as bad as it looked at times against Oregon, it was no worse than UCLA, Washington St., etc. against Oregon.

There. I fixed it for you.

If you don't want to hear others disrespect your team when it loses big, you should consider adopting the same approach. Given that most comments here aren't directed toward you specifically, you might even go as far as to call out your fellow Ute fans who choose to spread disrespect as well. • toosmartforyou Farmington, UT
    Nov. 16, 2013 8:03 p.m.

"Other than Stanford, Oregon has PULVERIZED every team they have played." That includes Utah.

And if you take that type of comparison, Utah is right there with Washington State, who the Utes play next week in Washington. So all things being equal, expect WSU to win since they have the home field advantage. That advantage has worked for everyone except Utah, by the way, since they lost to the worst road team in America two years ago and failed to get to the first conference playoff when the road was greased for them. And they haven't exactly been victorious, the muss notwithstanding, this year.....have they?

Putting things into perspective, the Utes don't belong in the PAC 12 conference...they're not competitive enough unless the other team looks past them (ask Stanford about that). They weren't competitive most of all the years they were in the WAC or the MWC either. Occasionally they had a break-out year. Maybe they will again, but don't bet the rent on it. (Ask Arizona all about the Rose Bowl.)

Colorado is shaping up to be the new rival---not anyone else---rumble in the rockies, is it?

Posting on Ute articles when they lose must be a moral victory for BYU fans. After all, there aren't any moral victories with this:

So Utah and BYU dropped games against each other so one could play Idaho State and the other could play Weber State. This is pathetic.

Since BYU is likely to drop some game in the early season to ruin their season and the Utes will probably go 5-7 again, the rivalry game was a must-see that sadly got dropped...

I'm getting tired of all the ute fans saying "ya but we beat BYU", "we have won 4 in a row". Ya Utah beat Alabama in 2008, U beat Stanford. Yay good for you. The problem ute fans can't seem to wrap their heads around is that they aren't better than those teams just because they beat them head to head. Look, I don't know why BYU always struggles with Utah, and seems snake bit by them, but both the eye test and expert rankings don't seem to give a darn that U beat us head to head. They recognize who the better program is over the season...three years straight now. Give whatever excuses make U feel better but BYU knows how to progress and finish seasons and U don't. And the SOS argument doesn't hold water this year...BYU 10th ranked SOS so enough of that weak excuse. Maybe it will take 5 or 6 seasons of 5-7 & 6-6 before ute fans get it. Imagine how far in the dust we'd leave Utah with Big 12 recruiting. It's no wonder CB & friends are so hopeful that never happens.

BTW, y'all need to be thinking of a bird to replace it as Stanford has already grabbed "The Cardinal"... I know, how about "The Pigeon"? Don't believe that one's been taken yet.

I really enjoyed the flow of the comments... It all started out with "Utah has one of the top ten defenses in the country" and then the likelihood of beating the Ducks went from 10% to something greater... And then Poof the commenters all disappeared... It was like watching David Copperfield... They're here and then they're gone... ??? Oh well... prediction accuracy was never my ute friend's strong suit.

The comments that I get the biggest chuckle out of are the ones that center around BYU losing 4 straight games to the Pigeons (trying to get use to it)... Like "the Coug Seniors are 0-4"... It makes me think of the 80's when the Cougs went 18-2... Or, it makes me think of the poor basketball seniors on the hill 1-11 over 7 years against the Cougs... lol.

    Careful what you wish for...

Is it possible that the Utes (and TCU) will never get back to the glory days of BCS busting - with their medicore records in a BCS conference? This year - this Ute team is good enough to be undefeated in the mediocre and mid major MWC - with a win over BYU and most likely TCU and BSU - the later 2 being in the BCS busting club as well. Undefeated, albeit with a much lower strength of schedule due to Pac 12, vs. MWC - they would probably be sporting a top 15 ranking - maybe higher. And the talk of ESPN sports center about a potential BCS bid.

The old adage - if you can't beat em, join em - was not the battle cry of the busters, but of the conferences who got tired of seeing their big payday going to an upstart, mid major. So they pulled in Utah, TCU and well, problem solved.

I personally miss the days of BSU, TCU, BYU and Utah - battling for a BCS bid, even though it was an at large invite.

    @tfer

It got and angst filled reply out of you. While I was being sarcastic there is some truth to it. stanford lost again last night, that means they have lost to 2 unranked teams, one with a losing record, so it isn't to hard to surmise they are a fraud as far as being in the "top 5" or for that matter even the "top 10" is concerned. oregon also lost, to a team that has lost twice to a couple of subpar teams. If they were really everything everyone had claimed they would not have lost.

No one in the pac12 has beaten anyone that even vaguely resembles a top 10 team unless you count asu's fraud "win" over wisconsin and of course wisconsin isn't a top 10 team anyway.

Really all we have heard is how good the pac12 is but we have no proof of it, just claims. Then of course the fact that they haven't beaten anyone else, and keep losing to low rent teams in their own conference tells us far more than the claims tell us.

Utah in the PAC-10.2 is starting to remind me of the old Mountain West team that always was a sub-.500 team but would find a way every year to pull off a bind side big upset victory at home.

Stanford looked past the Utes and that was a mistake. Just because they are cellar dwellers doesn't mean that they can't come up and bite a bowl bound team.

Congratulations Utah for being the Wyoming of the PAC-10.2.

Wow, all the U haters (AKA fans of the Team Down South) are really something. Yes Utah lost to #6 Oregon in Eugene. Pray tell what team hasn't gone to Eugene and come out with a loss the last couple of years? It's one of the toughest places to play in the country. It's easy for Y fans with their mid major schedule to laugh at a team with a top 5 toughest schedule when your team plays IDAHO STATE in November. Really, who has the Y beat this season that is all that? Texas, that just got beat six ways from Sunday by OSU? Houston, please, a one point eek out win against a fellow mid major? Utah has been very average this year playing very above average competition. When they have played weaker teams such as Weber State and BYU they won easily. Yes BYU fans, your team was the second biggest patsy Utah faced this year. Puff your chests up on that. Maybe wait until your team actually beats Utah in this decade before you act so high and mighty. The illogic of Y fan never ceases to amaze me.

"Pray tell what team hasn't gone to Eugene and come out with a loss the last couple of years? It's one of the toughest places to play in the country."

Let's change that just a little bit and compare it to what utah "fans" were telling us about BYU's loss at wisconsin last week.

"Pray tell what team hasn't gone to camp randle and come out with a loss the last couple of years? It's one of the toughest places to play in the country."

So last week BYU lost at wisconsin, a place almost no one has won in years, yet utah "fans" were hardly allowing BYU fans to use that as an excuse. But now we see utah "fans" trying to make a similar excuse because of course this week it was utah losing on the road in a tough place to play. Who were the 6 built in wins? Virginia? We lost... Utah? Again we lost with the infamous pac12 officiating fix team calling the game... Middle Tennessee? We did beat them and they are 6-4 on the season and second in their division of CUSA behind East Carolina who has killed NC this year ( a BCS team who is a half game behind Duke for Leadership in the ACC Coastal Division)... Idaho State was a gimmee (similar to Weber State for the Pigeons, I mean the utes)... Other than that you would have to be saying that Texas, Boise State, Georgia Tech, Utah State, Houston and maybe ND and Nevada were built in wins... All of which would beat utah today.

The truth is that the Pigeons, I mean the utes have 2 decent wins this year (BYU and Stanford) and both were near losses... That's it... That's all they have... Pretty tough to legitimately defend that record don't ya think???

I'm sorry jazzer and provoutefan but y'all are dead wrong... BYU has always been more successful against pac10 opponents than the utes have been and that trend would have continued this year... Had we played the ute schedule we would have finished Bowl eligible...

Who would we have beaten? OSU, Arizona, maybe UCLA, split with ASU and USC, (and if Stanford played like they played against Utah we would have got them as well), plus we would get WSU and Colorado in addition to USU and Weber State... BYU would have gotten 7 or 8 wins and would be Bowling in December.

On the other hand the Pigeons, I mean the utes would still not have gone bowling had they played the Cougs schedule... They possibly would have beaten Middle Tennessee and probably Idaho State and maybe Nevada in addition to their USU and BYU wins but that would have been it. That makes a 4-8 or 5-7 season.

The constant comparison between Utah and Byu gets so old. The same people making the same argument week in and week out.

As for the Utes, they did better than I thought they would against Oregon especially with Schultz getting his first start of the year. Adam did pretty good in a hostile environment. There were actually a lot of dropped balls that should have been caught not that would have made a difference in the outcome but it would have helped his confidence. I'm not sure of the extent of Wilson's injury, but I hope he is ok. He has had a tough second half of the season.

On the bright side, it was great to see Jake Murphy back in the line up. That kid is a very talented player and has been missed for the last few months of games.

And if the U gets 2 more wins??? Probably not going to bowl anyway.

    Talk about pathetic.

    according to your theory -

"Your way off...byu can't beat anybody that beat Utah if byu can't beat Utah. "

there was no chance Oregon was supposed to win against Utah.
Because Oregon can't beat anybody that beat Stanford if Oregon can't beat Stanford...

But wait Oregon just beat the Utes. Football games are never black and white, crazy things happen that's why you have to look at the whole season to decide which team is better. And In that regard BYU has been more consistent at beating good teams, true they have had some bad games against Utah and Virginia(first game of the season, young QB, new offense). Wisconsin was plain and simple the better team.

Also BYU has been improving the whole season, If BYU and Utah were to meet up im confident BYU would win.

To the true Ute fans, I am sorry about how the last two seasons have gone. I love your coaching staff and you definitely have some talented players on your team. I hope Coach Whittingham can pull the team out of this nose-dive next year.

As for the BYU haters who pose as Ute fans (Chris B), well not much to say, maybe this season will help you stop being so arrogant about the Pac-12 and stop disparaging the other teams in Utah, namely BYU and USU.

If BYU had to play week in and week out these teams I don't think we could do as well as Utah. It takes depth to win in Pac 12 we are no more deep then Utah.

  • Duckhunter Highland, UT

    @jazzer

"we are no more deep then Utah."

That depends on the position. AT QB, RB, WR, TE, and LB, BYU has far more depth than utah has. BYU has had key injuries at all of those positions other than QB and still has some excellent players playing them, they actually have a lot of depth in those positions. At DL, OL, they are probably about the same and I would say BYU probably has more depth at DB as well which is surprising.

Just look at the rosters and which team has been able to fill in for its injured players at each position more successfully and it is quite easy to see BYU has better depth overall. Now that doesn't mean BYU has better front end talent at all of those positions, they are just deeper and have more talent at a deeper level.

I love the cougs but Wisconsin depth, power and speed was just too much for us to handle. I think most pac 12 teams are going to be like them. I would like to think we are better then the Utes but I don't blame them for gettting beat. The Pac, SEC etc all have 3 positions deep of bigger, stronger faster guys.

    go cougs!

    @jazzer

But you weren't comparing BYU to wisconsin, you were comparing them to utah. wisconsin was a better team than bYU, hands down, but your comment was a comparison of the depth of talent BYU and utah have. In that comparison BYU has better depth than utah does at most positions.

When Hadley got suspended BYU just plugged in another guy. When Jordenson went down for the season BYU just plugged in another guy. Ditto at wr, rb, and te. Even at DB byu has had major injuries and their db's have still played pretty well and they've got some more guys on the bench that can play.

Depth of players is a different thing than first team talent. BYU has had good players to replace the ones they've lost, that equates to good depth. utah on the other hand has not been able to adequately replace players they have lost to injury and that is probably the biggest reason they are 4-6.

All I'm trying to say is we wouldn't do any better. I don't like Utah, I love when they lose but I'm not confident enough to say we could beat teams week in and week out.

If kvn gets hurts or Hoffman we have no one even close to their skill where as Ucla, USC etc are 2 or 3 deep at wr.

1-6 in PAC 12 play?!??? Three years in!!! We have nearly cemented our status as conference doormat in football. It is time for a change. I was excited as anyone when we were invited to the PAC 12 (and BYU was left out), but it sure looks silly to brag about our conference affiliation when we are so clearly outmatched and outcoached week in and week out. And while I did have hope that the conference affiliation and money would push us upward, the reality is looking more like we are becoming another Arizona (just as Colorado is).

Sure, we beat BYU the last four years, but we have been underdogs in some of those games (i.e. they were upsets). Why should we ever be an underdog against BYU? Why should we be ranked lower than BYU?

And we are 0-7 against BYU in basketball...were we favored in any of those games? Their basketball dominance is one reason why BYU has taken home more Deseret First Duel trophies.

We need change. Whit needs to go, and Chris Hill needs to go. I reserve judgment on the Utah Coach K, but I don't have high hopes.

"All I'm trying to say is we wouldn't do any better."

You have no way of knowing that. In fact, the evidence directly contradicts it.

Bronco is 9-8(53%) versus PAC teams
    Kyle is 12-20(38%)

Bronco has beaten Washington(2-0) and Oregon(1-0)
Kyle is winless versus Washington(0-2) and Oregon(0-1)

Bronco was undefeated versus MWC bottom dwellers New Mexico, CSU, Wyoming, and UNLV
Kyle lost to every one of them, including a 0-27 shutout to UNLV(2-10)

    Bronco won two MWC championships
    Kyle only one

Bronco had three 11-win, Top 15 seasons
    Kyle only one

    Bronco has five 10-win seasons
    Kyle only three

Bronco has simply been better at the weekly grind that it takes to be competitive in a conference, than Kyle.

    @ DeepBlue

To be fair, Bronco hasn't gone up against the elite teams in the PAC. The 7-6 Oregon team in '06 isn't comparable to Oregon today because the Ducks have evolved into a top 10 program. Same with UW. The Huskies were 0-12 the first time Bronco beat them.

Whatever happened in 2007 (and before) is completely irrelevant and has no bearing on what is happening now. The MWC days are long gone for both programs.

Plus I think you're forgetting that Bronco, this season, lost to Virginia. They are a bottom-dweller if there ever was one. That fact alone pretty much blows up your whole argument.

I don't normally comment on Ute articles, but curiosity brought me here (and seeing how many comments there were; it essentially became another BYU-Utah brawl article).

Anyway, I don't blame the Utes for losing. Nobody really expected the Utes to beat Oregon. Don't laugh at them for losing to Oregon; BYU would have almost certainly been beat just as bad.

But the Ute fans calling out BYU for playing Idaho State are very hypocritical. First of all, while BYU was beating up Texas, Utah was playing Weber State. Secondly, Utah plays Idaho State next year.

Also, I realize that we'll never know how well BYU would have done in the PAC, but since BYU's SOS is top 25 and they STILL have 7 wins (and ESPN says BYU is better than their record), that says a lot.

    @TwoForFlinching

"Plus I think you're forgetting that Bronco, this season, lost to Virginia. They are a bottom-dweller if there ever was one. That fact alone pretty much blows up your whole argument."

There's a HUGE difference between losing to a bottom feeder the first game of the season as opposed to late in the season.
