Anyone else notice the blatant biased reporting by Deseret news? Each of the cougar players were highlighted whereas others were grouped together.

    Go Utes!!

If you are looking tor a pro utah bias then go read the SL Trib. They favor the utes and don't give BYU any respect. BYU clearly had the better recruiting class this year and they gave them props. Get over it and accept the future of basketball in the state, which IS BYU.

Brandon Gurney is the DN beat writer for BYU athletics. Your real beef should be with the beat writer for Utah athletics who took a flyer on this one.

    Wookie:

Judging from the abundance of empty seats at Utah home basketball games in recent years, nobody really cares about Utah basketball; therefore, extensive coverage of Utah basketball recruits isn't really warranted.

The Running Utes are making great strides. The coaching staff is fantastic. The Recruiting is amazing, considering where we've been the last few years. Wright, Loveridge, Tucker, Taylor...are a very entertaining group to watch.

The DN is owned and run by the LDS church! What dark cave have you been living in if the pro-BYU slant is something new and a surprise to you?

I write for the Idaho State Journal in Pocatello and we had this discussion this past weekend. We don't have a lot of sidebar stories and features on our football and basketball teams because we're so bad no one wants to read them. We as a paper can't will the community to embrace the teams.

Same thing for the Utes. When the community starts to care, you'll see the coverage for the Utes increase. I remember vividly the Roger Reid era vs. Utah's Rick Majerus. The Utes got all the ink, they kept bringing in the great Utah players, ran a faster offense, and Roger Reid had a team of lower-level LDS players and an offense that scored in the high 40's and low 50's.
It was no contest. The Utes were the darlings of the state.

Now Dave Rose has all (most) of Utah's Mr. Basketball's, runs an offense kids love to be part of, and averages 25 wins per season.

@ magma - amazing and fantastic are not adjectives I would use to describe a team and coaching staff that has yet to reach .500. Loveridge is a great player and Chapman will be a great player, but the supporting cast on the U BB team is average for a D1 team, and below average compared to the rest of the PAC. It's going to take a couple more Loveridge, Chapman type players to get the team back to being an NCAA contender.

However, for Coug fans, we have to be salivating at the talent pipeline. 2016, 2017 and 2018 will be fantastic and amazing, and the recruiting class is fantastic and amazing.

CougFaninTX- I didn't say the team was amazing or fantastic. I said they were very entertaining. If you don't think it's amazing to see a team that has been below .500 for a few years bring in a top 30 recruiting class (per ESPN), then I'll just disagree.

I am very encouraged by the current trajectory of the Utah basketball program. Coach K and his staff are have completely turned things around on the hill.

    Go Utes!

I imagine a similar discussion with the Salt Lake writers. One team can't finish above 3rd in the WCC while another adjusts to the PAC12. Now is the chance for the Aggies to get some newspaper column space.

    Magna,

Don't worry too much about the coug fans and what they think about the Utah program or its recruits. They'll learn soon enough that things are changing at the U and the talent has improved. They're all sky high after a nice win over Stanford (despite how they like to rip on the Pac-12), but they'll still get a fair share of humble pie this year. It won't surprise me in the slightest if part of that humble pie get's served compliments of the Runnin' Utes.

I certainly give Dave Rose props though, he's got a nice program going and has had some very good recruiting classes. That's not an easy win for any team and they should be solid for years to come.

How far has the standard of success plummeted on the hill when 5-13, 15-18, not even a sniff at a post-season tournament, and "running" one of the most boring offenses in the country is considered "entertaining" and "making great strides"?

Don't be fooled by the 128 points the Utes put up in their season opener against a high school team; the Utes were one of the lowest scoring teams in the country last season, not surpassing 80 points against a single Division 1 opponent the entire season.

I love the whiney utah "fan" posts LOL! Frankly if BYU's program was as bad as utah's has been I'd be grateful for any write up at all. It appears utah signed a good class, still only second fiddle in this state but whatever, and they have a couple of ok players already on the team, but they still haven't done anything so until they do all the utah "fans" slobbering all over them looks a bit silly.

But beside all of that wookie the fact is that more people care about BYU and BYU's basketball team than care about utah and their basketball team. That is simply a fact and newspapers need to cater to the majority and what that majority wants to read.

Now I personally like to read about both schools so it wouldn't bother me one bit if they'd added another paragraph to this article and saved you some serious angst, but they didn't deem it worthy of any more print space so there you are.

    SoonerUte,
The WCC had a team ranked number 1 for a little bit. That same team took a number 1 seed in the tourney. So yes, BYU got third in a conference with a number 1 seed.

How long are the Utes going to continue to use that "we're still adjusting line?" If your team is so great, just play better.

    It's a weak excuse.

Utes would have made an easy transition to the PAC in the Majerus years.

Looks like the Utes are bringing in talent, but so did Boylen. I'm interested to see all three teams in the state become competative. But there is a hope that things will get better on the hill.

Farid, your memory is playing games with you. During the Roger Reid era he got all the good Utah recruits and had a winning record against Majerus in head to head play. It was only after Reid was fired that Majerus started winning the recruiting battles.

Hey Magna Ute Fan -- love your attitude. You aren't disrespecting others but promoting your team. Good on ya! That's the way everyone should be. I dislike fellow BYU fans that trash the Utes MORE than people like Chris B who love to be ridiculous.

I too think Coach K is a great addition to the Utes and it will be good to see Utah gain some national prestige. I'd much rather beat a Utah team in the upper eschelons of the PAC 12 than the team they've been in the cellar.

Sports is fun and the talk should be as well.

Swimmer- Maybe your memory isn't quite what you think it is either. A quick google search shows that Reid coached at BYU from 89-96. In the early years, 89-91, Reid landed Mr Basketball for the state of Utah. But Majerus landed Mr Basketball 93-97. That would seem to shoot a hole in the "Roger Reid ... got all the good Utah recruits" theory.

How can U say the coaching staff is fantastic when Krystkowiak's (not Coach K who is at Duke) best year is still not as good as Boylen's worst year?

How about an adjective like potential? I do think he has the potential to improve the program, but until he gets the Utes into the NCAA I wouldn't describe the coaching as fantastic. At least he has seemed to stop the mass exodus of players after each season.

I really do hope the Utes improve. I'd love to see U win every game except against the Cougs or Aggies (if U will play them again).

    Good luck.

    @ CougFaninTX
I know it pains you as a BYU fan that Utahs recruiting classes are closing the gap with BYU. Utah has landed the top Utah recruit 2 years in a row and bringing in a top 30 recruiting class this year @ scott not bad for a team that went 15-18 last year and making a deep run in the Pac-12 tourney.

Coach K has Utah going in the right direction and as a BYU fan you can not deny it. Utah will be the top team in the State after all who wants to play in high school gyms. Clearly not the top LDS talent Parker,

    @ Swimmer

Regarding Roger Reid vs. Rick Majerus & recruiting during their era: Utah Mr. Basketball

    1989-Shawn Bradley (BYU)
    1990-Ken Roberts (BYU)
    1991-Justin Weidauer (BYU)
    1992-other program
    1993-Ben Melmeth (Utah)
    1994-Alex Jensen (Utah)
    1995/96-Jeff Johnsen (Utah)
    1997-Britton Johnson (Utah)

From what I can tell, Reid got the early commitments when he first started but once his system/program became better known, Utah handily won the recruiting war.

I am just jazzed about getting Dastrup to go along with Nixon, T J Haws, Toolson, Andrus, Nick Emery, Mika, Chatman, Hartsock, Bartley, Andrus, Seljaas, Jackson, and Bailey... What a rotation...

If BYU is ever able to make a BIG RUN in the NCAA Playoffs it looks like 2016 and/or 2017 will definitely be the years.
