With the new rules substantially reducing the ability of opponents to mug Haws
like they did last season, Haws, Carlino, and Collinsworth have been set free to
do what they do best - run the floor and score.BYU's exciting
brand of basketball just got even more exciting.
This BYU basketball team is the real deal. I keep getting so impressed by the
depth of talent on the roster. Looking forward to great things this season.
ESPN reported Haws scored 31 not 29Tyler Haws, G3510-182-39-131783301231
The new rules play into the run and gun style of basketball, so the best defense
now is a great offense. Stanford looked lost in transition! With six
players in double figures I hope the Cougars can keep improving (free throws
I like this team and its potential, but it is a little early to be making these
pronouncements, Mr. Sorensen.
And, to smack a big PAC 12 opponent like Stanford is huge for this BYU program.
We're off to a really good year. I love to watch the assist in the game.
Their fast break is breath-taking!Go Cougars!
I loved the game. There were so many contributors and so many hit a good
percentage of shots. I loved the pushing. But one thing I did notice is that
Stanford shot very poorly. Had they stuck their wide open shots, the outcome
may very well have been different. If BYU can get ahead and stay ahead, they
will give teams fits. And it sure seemed like BYU missed a lot of free throws.
They need to get that down. Congratulations Cougars. Keep it up.
I like the new rules. However it will be interesting to see if the officials in
different parts of the country stay consistent. If they are consistent players
are going to have to learn defense a little better if they have been used to
holding on and pushing like the NBA.I think it will help the game much more and
the players will be better for it.
Offensively they looked great, though expecting this kind of output every game
is unrealistic. I am worried about their D, though. Scoring 112 kind of allows
everyone to overlook the fact that they gave up 100+ as well. When they have
off-nights shooting, how will they respond? I guess we'll see. It'll
be a fun year to watch, but what their ceiling is, I have no idea. Take care of
Texas at home and then Oregon and the 'Zags on the road and I'll
officially allow myself to hope for a deep NCAA run.
This is a team. Standford had at least one NBA potential player according to
the announcers who could have gone next year. Their center was 7'2" or
so an impressive. They have a very good team that will win a lot of games, but
BYU did a job on them. And BYU plays 10 men. Two deep in every position. Of
course you can't sit out a player like Haws very long, but Carlino and
Collingsworth very impressive as well. And Mika is not the first freshman to
start for BYU in 15 years for no reason. He is good and will get better. You
can go on and on about these players. Austin helps a lot. I think Halford is
going to start shooting 3's and that will be interesting. I'm excited.
I know Utah is stronger and USU is always good, but they may not be able to
Kralon"With six players in double figures I hope the Cougars can
keep improving (free throws percentage)."BYU's free throw
shooting does need to improve, but BYU is hardly alone in struggling from the
stripe early in the season.Kentucky(20/36) and Duke(16/28), both
loaded with future NBAers, were a combined 36 of 64 (56%) in losses last night.
With all the fouls now being called, the Cougs really need to improve their free
throw shooting, particularly the big guys. If not, we'll lose some games
on FT shooting alone.
Agree with most everything said so far, but I have to say the most impressive
part of the win was seeing Collinsworth run the offense team from the point with
Carlino on the bench with two fouls, for the better part of 8 minutes (game
clock time), and Haws out for more than 5 minutes with two fouls, at the back
end of the first half, and to have the team stay 10 points up that entire time.
Very impressive. He was steady, aggressive, showed a deft shooting touch from
outside (something he did not show much of as a pre-mission frosh). We can
expect Haws to get his 20+ and Carlino to push and push hard (and make turnovers
in the process -- thank goodness not as many as last year and the year before!)
and get points and assists in the up-tempo attack, but to know that Collinsworth
can run the show and get the offense to score points when those two might not be
on the floor, is something that might make this team really really good. And
just think what they could do if JParker had come instead of going to Duke.
Scouts just reported that Dastrup has changed his mind and will sign with BYU
instead of Ohio St. Woo Hoo! Come on DNews, get with the program and report
this. It's a big deal!
And 4-star big man Dastrup de-commited from Ohio State and will be coming to BYU
next year! Great time to be a Coug!
Dastrup signing with BYU is icing on the cake - kudos to Dave Rose. The future
looks mighty bright in Provo.
I have really been enjoying watching BYU basketball for many reasons.1. They play an uptempo style ball2. They have balanced scoring and can
shoot from the outside (Jazz take note of this one)3. Dave Rose is a great
coach but even a better person. 4. The players just play and are
respectful and show good sportsmanship. 5. Tyler Haws is just plain fun to
watch shoot the ball. Not many players have the intermediate shooting range he
has. (Hayward take note of this one)6. Strong bench, very deep, with teams
getting in foul trouble this year, don't underestimate bench play. Go Cougars!!!
The biggest bright spots in my eyes so far is Haws developed strength and three
point shooting. That is huge, adding that to what he brought last year. And
Carlino looks about twice as good as he was last year. That type of improvement
is way cool. Good job guys.Defensively they're going to
struggle, i think. Interior defense looks abysmal. But that can improve.
Simply get guys to be in the right spots, basically. I'm eager
to see more from their bench. After their two starter big men they are pretty
thin. Sharpe and Worthington are fillers and nothing more at this point. I
hope they improve drastically as guys coming off the bench. We'll need
I like what I see so far offensively. Defense needs work. Our young big guys
will get better with each game especially playing a tough schedule like they
are. The utes could take a lesson on scheduling.
I loved seeing BYU fans making comments and constructive criticism on this post.
Way to go! Sometimes these comments get way too negative with opposing trolls.
Just sayin'. Love it Cougar fans!Go Cougars!
