I was disgusted watching my young daughter learn the alphabet in kindergarten.
They took the entire year to teach the kids the alphabet.I bought a
phonics program for her younger sister, then four years old. This little girl is
of average intelligence (IQ about 110) and I taught her the sounds of each
letter in 20 minutes. She was able sound out simple words like CAT and BET
within one hour. We learned years later that she is dyslexic. The old ways
work.Text book publishers learned back in the 1930's and
1940's that not teaching phonics is a gold mine. If you don't teach
phonics kids have to memorize what every word looks like (just like Chinese and
Japanese and other pictorial languages). This results in illiterate kids, then
the teachers unions get to collect dues from all the teachers required to
remediate the intentionally created illiteracy, and then there are all of the
remedial text books the publishers get to sell as well.Reading is a
skill to be mastered by the third grade, not a subject to be studied for twelve
years.Just do what works.
How does a child reach Kindergarten without knowing the alphabet? A great many
children can already read and write.
I think is was a Republican idea to cut aid to education, W.I.C. programs, Pell
Grants, raise the interest rate on student loans, cut Project Head Start, and
many other cultural aspects to learning like music, art, and physical education.
But, for the children of the Republican politicians who want to cut all these
programs, they send them to private school in order to stay away from all the
"riffraff" in our public schools.
