Well, my cousin's husband is a captain of one of these ships...and
I've been told the same, that nobody wants to sail with the man, and his
crew very much disliked him, as he risked all of their lives and safety by his
stupidity. There are very few captains overall on these ships, and Phillips is
well known in the community of sailors...there is really no news in this...too
bad Hanks can't be truthful in telling the story...truth makes a much
better story. Otherwise, the movie is totally fictional in the end.
CWEB,I don't think films (even most documentaries) ever leave
the category of "fiction."
Tom Hanks did an incredible job with the acting, no matter if it was based on
real or fictional events of that time. In fact, I was super impressed with the
"captain" of the pirates, who was actually a chauffeur prior to doing
this acting stint. It was as real as you can get without the overacting that
could happen.Hopefully truth will win out eventually. Will Captain
Phillips' conscience start acting up to fix the tale? We'll see...
2nd try:Hmmmmmm.....I'm not so sure that this captain is worthy
of being villianized as he is. "Nobody" wants to sail with him? Really?
"Nobody"?When people sue for millions and millions of
dollars, instead of just sucking up life's difficult experiences and moving
on, and lawyers get involved in things (which, when looked at with the reality
of life, the vast majority of American lawyers are driven solely by
money....yes, that is why most of American society despises them)....I begin to
question the legitimacy of the claims of those who are suing as well as the
honesty of their lawyers.A unsafe, risk-taking captain?Maybe.Maybe not.
I've read the book and Cpt Phillips is portrayed as the kind of captain
that one would want to serve under. "Hope for the best, prepare for the
worst." I am always skeptical of the motives of men when big money can
perhaps be had and maybe there is a smidgin of jealousy of Phillips'
notoriety that he received. I'm not saying that what the crew claim is
inaccurate but I am saying that there is ample reason to not to jump to
conclusions and believe the crew 100%. There may well have been instances where
Phillips could have made another choice but giving him the benefit of the doubt
he probably did the best that he could with the information at hand at that
