I think what Republicans, and many politicians for that fact, have forgotten is
that they were not sent to Washington to beat the opposition, but to represent
the people. Sure, some people are narrow enough sighted to think their neighbor
is the enemy, but our real concerns should be about those outside our boarders.
We are all Americans, yes with differing view points on some issues, but at the
end of the day, we are all neighbors and partners in this political experiment
called American Democracy. Lets stop being distracted by side
issues raised to drive wedges between us. Lets hope the Republicans can return
back to be advocates, rather then simply those who point out problems.
Yes, challenging corruption (Benghazi cover-up, fast and furious cover-up, the
IRS debacle and NSA spying scandals, et al), malfeasance (Obamacare)is only
being negative. How dare anyone ask questions of the aristocracy? How dare they
demand honesty, question waste and challenge lies?
"At the same time Republicans seem uninterested in governing, Democrats seem
incapable of it. It is little wonder that only 19 percent of Americans trust the
federal government to do what's right — a seven-point drop since
January."The only part of your article that is correct, especially
that the Democrats are incapable of governing. But, again, what does
"governing" mean? Democrats believe big government can solve any
problem and as we are experiencing big government solves nothing and creates
havoc not to mention massive debt. Conservatives believe men should govern
themselves and government should get out of the way and be minimally invasive in
our lives. Big government is so very, very expensive in so many ways!
Gerson, when did you write this article? Because what you propose is exactly
what Marco Rubio and other Republicans are getting ready to do next week. It
starts with a bill to allow the people to delay the mandate to enroll.
That's governing. Good grief Gerson, from the way you talk you'd
think Cruz was still at the podium. That's ancient history now. With the
numbers coming in and a lot of Americans seeing their health care bill rise,
that is the opening door through which the next round of governing will take
place. mellow out dude, we got this!
Only just reading the title: Yes, everyone just be politically correct, for
that is what everyone wants to hear (sarcasm). Republican party, tow the line
or else? It is no wonder that Independents, Libertarians, and Tea party party
people have a good laugh every morning. They don't have to be validated by
the media, the Democratic and Republican parties, and a deluded citizenry. Come
join, the few, the proud, and the brace. It is very liberating! You can laugh
at the antics of both parties as they lead their followers over the cliff!
Here's reality.." Americans have not ceased looking for responses to
routine educational failure, persistent economic stagnation — or to the
problems of an expensive, inequitable health care system. These are public
challenges, in which government plays an inescapable role. A successful
political party will provide a superior conception of that role."Here's fantasy and ideology.." Democrats believe big government can
solve any problem and as we are experiencing big government solves nothing and
creates havoc not to mention massive debt. Conservatives believe men should
govern themselves and government should get out of the way and be minimally
invasive in our lives."Sorry but delaying the mandate is not
governing, unless it's for four to six weeks. Anything else is simply
another destruction ploy. However, I do think coverage levels will be one of
the first changes to the law, and properly timed Republicans can have a
governing influence on that.
The idea to guarantee castostrophic health care coverage for everyone is a good
one. Unfortunately, none of us have faith that congress can pass good
legislation any more.Vote for independents in 2016!
The GOP is the party of "NO".I scratched my head trying to
think of things they are actually for, and this is all I could come up
with...1. The poor bring it upon themselves, let them suffer.2. Starting wars of offensive. [Oil, trampling Religion, or stimulating
the economy].3. Denying Healthcare to those already denied by FOR profit
Corporations.4. Cutting taxes to the 1% who OWN 80% of everything.5.
Bailing out their friends on WallStreet, and slipping the bill to MainStreet.6. Trampling the United States Constitution by shutting down the Government
when they can't win with enough votes.7. Turning a blind eye to
background checks, allowing psychopaths and known criminals to be armed to the
teeth.8. Being pro-life, but ironically pro-war and pro-Death Penalty.9. Not allowing a Woman and her Doctor to decide what is best for HER.10. Denying rights like Civil Unions or Domestic Partnerships.11.
Ignoring immigration reform. There's a thousand more reasons,
but that's a good enough start under 200 words...
The fringe of the GOP (which today is a large portion of it) has been telling us
for four decades that government is incompetent, evil, and “the
problem.” The House/Senate GOP is now full of young firebrands
nursed on this message and who believe it to their core. How does anyone think
they are now all of a sudden going to become models of good governance?Assuming the effort is even undertaken (I see no sign of this on right-wing
media) it will be like turning the Titanic… and we know how that effort
happy2bhere:Would it likewise be good governance should some
Democratic Senators offer people to not pay as much in taxes for defense? What if some really liberal Democrats said "the people should decide
how much they want to support our military adventures, and there should be check
boxes on their tax forms on which defense items they wish to support, with their
tax bill being adjusted accordingly"? Kind of like an individual line-item
veto. It would certainly be a very popular idea, I would imagine.Good governance? Well... maybe not.Even with the web server
issues on startup, Republican attempts to delay ACA will be seen by most as a
transparent attempt to deny healthcare reform, in much the same way the shutdown
and threat of default resulted in slight increases for the support of Obamacare,
outside the GOP echo chamber. Is Rubio's idea for a delay in the
individual mandate a sound strategic move, or just another half-baked GOP
tactic? When you look at things from a longer term perspective, it looks more
like just another desperate move, without any constructive policy alternative.
Open minded mormon: Without disagreeing with you about the Republican party
being the party of 'No', let me tell how the the democrats are the
party of 'Yes'.1-Reward the lazy.2-Invite the
terrorists to the neighborhood barbeque, denigrate America, and organize
Anti-America sit-ins.3-Give everyone everything, including Health care,
while expecting nothing in return.4-Tax everything to fund abortion
clinics, perversion, and government daycare.5-Bail out Wallstreet while
demanding that wallstreet and the government take care of you.6-Trampling
the Constitution by wanting to scrap it for more enlightened ideas.7-Supporting a fascist police state that denies citizens the right to bear
arms.8-Being pro-choice and encouraging immoral behavior with no
consequences.9-Encouraging abortions for convenience, 24-7, anytime, any
day, for whatever reason.10-Supporting Civil Unions for gays, transgender,
bi-sexual, or othewise, but denying a man and a women to express their support
of their chosen union without being considered a bigot, rascist, or old
fashioned.11-Allowing all immigrants, criminals, terrorists, or drug
dealers across our borders, but stopping a family man from exercising his right
to bear arms and defend his family.Welcome to the new Democratic
Come on: let's have more social spending, free medical care for all, total
amnesty, higher taxes get those rich guys out of there, and we need a permanent
president like maybe Mr. Obama. Get a life.
So maybe the GOP should all wear happy faces and just rubber stamp everything
from Barack Obama. That is actually what Barack expects and what he considers
compromise if you can believe it. Just do everything I say with no push back.
Yes Obama's polices have worked out so well haven't they...especially
the Obamacare roll out. Seems to me there weren't near enough people
pushing back - asking questions - demanding answers about Obamacare before this
hideous rollout blew up in the faces of all Americans. Nothing worse than a
bunch of happy face yes men who just rubber stand what the boss wants. That is a
recipe for disaster ...as we are now seeing in living color with Obamacare.
Recall what Nancy Pelosi said about Obamacare - we will worry about
understanding it AFTER we implement it. Alawys a great strategy.
"Yes, challenging corruption (Benghazi cover-up, fast and furious cover-up,
the IRS debacle and NSA spying scandals, et al".....I find these
ongoing, silly comments just annoying. What, and the previous administrations
haven't had like issues. Iran-Contra, Arms for Hosteges, Closed door
discussions with oil companies days before the invasion of Iraq - with
accompanying declining congress what happened in those meetings.... we could go
on forever like this. I particularly find the "Benghazi
cover-up" most humorous, in light of two facts. 1) Just 30 years ago
yesterday, during the sacred Reagan administration, over 200 marines were killed
in attacks in Lebanon.... and we simply turned tail and left the country.
Added to that... silly people wondered why we would not comment on the mission
of the CIA in Libya at the time..... only to have an abduction of a top Al Qaida
operative just weeks ago.. from Libya... by US forces. If some people cant
figure why we were talking about the Benghazi mission... why it was secret...
there just isn't much help for them. They just want to hate....
just that simple. No logic will ever convince them otherwise.
"...Congressional Republicans have proved themselves divided and incapable
of adopting a coherent strategy...".Incapable of adopting a
coherent strategy?Hatched 11/2008, election night to be
exact...fully implemented 1/2009, masterfully messaged daily, republican's
developed and implemented a single minded coherent strategy of obstruction...at
all costs. The national embodiment of this strategy was stated
perfectly by the republican representative from s.carolina...It's good politics for republicans to oppose the black guy in the White
Perhaps the GOP should start 1st by Stopping being the Salem Witch trials
of political puritans amongst themselves?Saint Ronald Reagan would
be publically crucified as a RINO in the Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity Tea-Party
extremist lead GOP today.Honestly, There is NOTHING positive
coming from them in over 25 years. An old proverb says -- Porcupines
live Alone.Meaning, prickly negative personalities can't associate
with others without pricking and hurting them.
As long as the republican party cannot extricate the tea party from itself, it
will have to settle for angry, and obstructionist for its' own sake. Bereft
of any other ideas, and seeing no need to change, that's all they've
Here's a key difference between the problems facing Democrats and
Republicans:The Democrats big problem right, the ACA web site, is a
technical issue that can be fixed, relatively quickly, within a few weeks. The Republicans big problem is a huge internal battle between
traditional Republicans and Tea Partiers. This problem is not so easily fixed,
and there appears no effort to address the problem. In 2014 the ACA
website problem will be a distant memory, and Republicans will still be engaging
in intra-party warfare.
They might lack some articulation and political finesse (Boehner in particular),
but describing the GOP (a member of which I am not) as simply "negative"
is nonsense. There's nothing "negative" about trying to
keep our country from falling over the fiscal cliff of complete insolvency that
our massive and ever increasing debt is pushing us toward.I wish
only that they could come up with a more persuasive argument to convince the
mind-numbed electorate that we're destined for a disaster if we don't
do some **serious** changing...NOW!
If the Republicans would toe the Admin's line and support the President we
could get the country completely ruined fast instead of drawing it out for now
five years and no end in sight. Checks and balances - how astute our founders
I love....it is just that simple.... abortions and guns. The same person that
doesn't want abortions (i don't support abortions either) is the same
person who thinks the local Dick's Sporting Goods needs to be carrying
armor piercing bullets.... and large magazines for their assault rifles. I
guess it just depends on who you want to kill decides what party you should
belong to..... good grief as the argument gotten that stupid?
The best ideas are for liberty and freedom, something most of the bloggers here,
including the Democratic and Republican supporters, don't understand or
even consider. They like their socialist collective rights philosophy too much
to understand what brought Americans here and what made America the greatest
nation on earth. Instead of admitting that they are socialists, it is easier to
blame the liberty lovers as bereft of ideas. America was born on an idea. It
was called liberty and freedom, something socialists will never understand.
