Im pretty law abiding but I had to cheer these folks. The park officials were
there working to keep people out and taking pictures and taking down license
plate numbers to send out possible citations -- so as long as they're
working, why.not be working to let people IN.
I love it! The parks belong to us, NOT the government. Heck, I thought at one
point we WERE the government, but that's a notion long dead. If I
lived closer, I'd be over that gate, too. Civil disobedience is all
we have left. I'm proud of Occupy Zion!
Unbelievable. Employees who work in Springdale as well as those who work in the
park are now unemployed, while the politicians who represent these employees
continue to draw their salaries.Tourists who have planned and saved and
made reservations are losing money due to cancellations. Foreign tourists are
left in a lurch. U.S. citizens cannot enjoy the parklands which their tax
dollars have created, but risk repercussions for an act of civil disobedience of
climbing a fence to enter the park. When Obama is introduced abroad
is he introduced at the President or as the Democrat? Is he introduced as the
leader of the United States or as the leader of the Democrat party? He
represents all citizens of this country, including those protestors who climb
fences, and he needs to lead this country into consensus.
The only reason the Park is closed is Obama thinks it will help him
"win" the latest debt ceiling battle. He does not want to make any
concessions. The Park should generate enough revenue not only stay open , but
also make money especially Zions in the fall. Very sad to see partisan politics
purposefully hurt peoples pocketbooks just to get their way.
It just occurred to me that Interstate Highways are federally funded. Will they
be shut down? Let the politicians and their families be inconvenienced and
let's see how quickly consensus can be reached.I spoke to an
outfitter/lodge/restaurant owner who told me her business is losing $10,000 a
day, and she had to lay off all of her guides. Her business is a small business
in a remote area. How much must the folks in Springdale be losing?Today there was an article online about those federal employees who were
furloughed being reimbursed. What about those non-federal employees who work in
the park for Xanterra and who work in Springdale for local businesses. Will they
be reimbursed? The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
I say if the close down the government it should be those that are not doing
their jobs not the ones that are doing their jobs even when they don't know
they will be paid for it. Close down the White House, the Senate, and the
Congress. Lock the gates until we the people vote in a new President a new
Senate and a new Congress. Strip them of all their medical and pensions and
round the clock security and tell them to go look for a job and pay for their
own medical and live like the rest of us.
Bad optics for Obama.
When individuals or groups claim ownership to public property what they are
saying is that they have the right to treat the public property as they would
their own private property. It just isn’t so. When the real owners of
the public property, which includes all of us, make rules for the use of the
public property and provides enforcement for those rules, the right to use
public property as we would our private property is suspended. This
is the reality of people living together in a civilized society. We trade our
right to use non private property as our own for the privilege of controlled
using of property that we don’t own privately. Without
enforcement, rules and laws have no effect on the behavior of people. It is
impossible to pass a perfect law that pleases everybody and which will observe
and respect. It is enough that most people follow the plan laid out by leaders
and observe the laws they make. However, the degree of consequences
is different for every law and rule and when a certain is point is exceeded
enforcement will need to be increased.
How absurd and arrogant to think the Obama Administration thinks it can close
natural areas that have been there since time immemorial. I somehow think that
people could navigate the trails just fine as if it were not a park to begin
with. \\They're even trying to close the Ocean down by Florida
declaring an entire bay closed just because it is adjacent to NPS land. Keep overreaching, Barack Obama. Americans, at least those who are not
drunk with the Kool-Aid, are catching on what this is all about. Some of us
have seen it for a long time.
Each day of the shutdown merely increases the evidence of Obama's petulant
Part of me says, obey the law, part of me is jealous, would love to be able to
go into the tunnel and get lots of pics.
I'm confused. There is no money appropriated, so they cannot
have federal employees working to open ANY of the parks. But,there
are plenty of Park Service employees busy putting up barrycades and taking
photos and warning "trespassers". Just why are THESE employees on the
job and getting paid? When funding is restored, they shoulc cut the
amount for the National Park Service by at least as much as they wasted with all
their nonsensical attempts to close down public wide open spaces and any area
other than a brick and mortar building that is actually manned during public
hours. This is outrageous! Harry Reid and Barack Obama should be
ashamed of themselves for the wasteful, arrogant and needless hassles they are
imposing on "citizens." But, instead they are celebrating that their
plan is working. Disgusting!
This Federal government shut down and National Park situation should help
strengthen Utah's future plans for having Federal lands returned to the
States. Utah would benefit greatly from having control of all Federal in
holdings including the National Parks. We have proven that State control of
it's own land is more beneficial for the local population. Think of the
tourist trade if the State was in control, or even better County.
I agree with these kids, if the rangers are there to arrest, open the gates and
let Americans enjoy what they own. Truth is, we don't need the park
rangers to be there, we can find our own way, their only interest is the revenue
to pay their salary. Same with Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon and the
rest. Open the gates and go away, you just aren't needed.
Normally I would be into this kind of thing, but right now, I think it's
just silliness. They are only causing trouble for local authorities...who have
nothing to do with the government shutdown. Do you think congress cares that
these "rebels" jumped a fence? I think they have more things to worry
about. The rangers are there for many reasons, including YOUR SAFETY. They
also clean the parks after sloppy tourists who just throw their trash anywhere.
Sure, it's "just a park," but why make trouble for the locals who
have just been furloughed? Grow up and wait a few days.
Our Government has turned against us.Power to the people! And Atlas Shrugged. It is all happening.
People, if we want to win any fights politically, we should stick to the facts
and stop trying to spin things with shaky facts and shaky opinions. For
instance, @ winsor and DN Subscriber 2... It seems reasonable to assume that
there are perhaps only 2-3 employees there right now. That is not enough to
keep the park staffed enough for visitors (according to federal guidelines that
minimize lawsuits really). But it is enough to warn people to stay out and
collect evidence for those who ignored it, incase federal prosectors want to
charge them. Or @ anyone who is blaming Obama completely for this.
Really? This is too easy to see through. Seriously... what are you trying to
accomplish. Someone on the opposite side of the political fence won't be
convinced by this spin. ONly the naive will, but they will easily be convinced
otherwise with a reasonable study of what has happened or someone explaining it
and then you will look like a liar. Having that said, Good for the
shutdown. Let's keep everything locked down until they fix it. Simple
math that the congress can't seem to understand. Balancing a budget!!
Mom of 8 folks:There are some KC-135 airplanes parked on the east
side of the Salt Lake Airport that belong to you. The Utah Air National Guard
fly’s and protects property that belongs to us, NOT the government. Do
not try going over that gate down there. If you insist on exercising civil
disobedience down there, you may experience deadly force.
As demonstrated by the tea party, disobeying laws to force a point or a repeal
is favored in our country now.
We can hope that it's just for a "few days."
@SoUtBoy25No, the only reason the parks are closed is because Congress
didn't fund them.
Do you need any more evidence demonstrating that the government believes it is
MORE and BIGGER than the people it represents? Our land paid for with
our money and yet the obama beauracrats try to block you from using it and then
attempt to intimidate you with the threat of fining you for using something that
is already ours to begin with.People need to wake up and get a clue
and stop voting these big government people into office. There are
quotes from Rangers around the country essentially stating they have been told
to "make it as miserable as possible for people".The
government is a leech on our liberty and freedoms.Vote them all out
every term until they get the message they are accountable to us.
So I won't have a shuttle or a Ranger. Why can't I just go walk
around on our land anyways? This is just case and point of how
self-important the government believes it is. It will exert its power over you
at any opportunity. Both parties are guilty but one is certainly
worse than the other at removing freedoms.Vote to make it stop.
Stop being so apathetic to these dictatorial egomaniacs.
Heck..... the freeways belong to the government.... and we are the
government..... so we should be able to do what ever we like.... correct? How
dare they tell me they - the government - has rules. And for sure....
my house is my own.... how dare they tell me I can provide drinks to kids under
age.... its my house, I will do as I will.I get protesting. Did
they try picketing the park? Did they think about holding a rally? Did they
organize a community protest? No.... they just wanted to go on a
hike... do what was fun for them. This had nothing to do with a protest, or
Occupy Zions. This is I want to go hiking. If they wanted to impact change,
doing something self-serving isn't the path forward. This is just more
self interest we see so commonly now days. This is the antipathy of
patriotism... it is selfism.
Hopefully, if anything else, citizens who love our Parks will realize that Obama
does not feel the same way. Hopefully, they will not be followers of those who
are making life quite sad, miserable and remember this when the Obamaites come
forth deceiving the public as they are today. I never thought I would live long
enough to witness the selfishness, the greed and the puffed up attitudes that
are in the White House, and our Government. They are not all like that but they
know who they are. It's a sad..sad...sad day.
There are over 300,000,000 people in this country, many of which are dealing
with much bigger issues than a dozen people climbing a fence at a temporarily
closed park. Why is this even considered news worthy? Must be an extra slow
Our esteemed Governor should use the power we gave him to protect our tourism
business and send in our National Guard and reopen all parks in Utah. The
federal government must be reminded that they serve the people and the states,
not the other way around.
Why are the rangers "working to keep people out and taking pictures and
taking down license plate numbers to send out possible citations" vs. just
letting people in?Because it takes a lot fewer folks to guard a
single gate than to patrol a huge park. Why patrol the park? Will anyone get
into trouble and need rescuing (happened when I visited Bryce)? Will anyone
commit vandalism?I understand it is unpopular but either they are
open or closed. They cannot be both open AND closed.
one voteconsidering the history of civil disobedience by the left
your criticism of the tea party has no credibility, but merely proves liberal
hypocrisyHamathIt is abundantly clear that Obama wants a
shutdown because he thinks he will win politically because it diverts attention
from his scandals, and he is making it more painful deliberately in an effort to
break republicans. Therefore even if both parties are liable, the blame goes to
Obama at his point because he is the president and he is NOT leading, he is
merely being vindictive towards the general population for political purposes
As soon as someone gets hurt in there and no one comes to rescue them the story
will change to ' why weren't they prevented from entering the
This is not the fault of:A. The Tea PartyB. Ted CruzC.
RepublicansD. George BushE. All of the aboveThe
leader is Barack Obama.
Stop show boating. Hassling the over worked park employees that are there to
protect YOUR park, is not civil disobedience and has no value. Climb over the
fence around congress and the White House if you want to make a point.
Yes! The employee making rules for the employer.
@one vote do you not remember Occupy Wallstreet, that Democrats supported? So
fast liberals forget their own actions.
And where did it say the people climbing the fence were tea party members?
Yes, Onion Daze. Good point. But the land of natural parks was there before
the guys with Smokey Bear Hats ever came on the scene. Not comparable to
KC-135s situation. Fact is, most National Parks are simply too large to police
anyway even when the gov't is operating. SIlly to close a road and
campground to say that the Park is "closed." Fine, close the
campgrounds but not the trails. Or the thru-roads.I think citizens
ought to feel empowered to just hike in whetever they want. There
are stories all over america coming out about how the NPS is going way overboard
even threatening private concessions and privately operated Mount Vernon to
close. Chicago style mobbery. That's what we get with this extreme
left-wing President whose only qualification before being elected was a
Community Rabble-rouser (oh, excuse me.. "organizer,").
Rather than punishing all the rest of us, those elected to office in Washington
DC need to punish themselves. Each and everyone one of them needs to hand over
their paychecks and not receive any pay whatsoever until they can come to terms
all can agree on. Put what they would have earned toward paying down the debt
or paying for this new healthcare plan. Whatever standard politicians think the
population should live by, they should also be willing to live by, too.
When I moved to Texas a number of years ago I thought it was odd that the
elementary students pledged allegiance to the Texas flag right after the pledge
of allegiance to the US flag. I also thought it odd that there were no federal
parks in Texas. Although the scenery here isn't as breathtaking as what
I've been used to for most of my life I'm feeling fairly liberated
right now. I can walk into any of the State Parks and Sites without being
turned away by a federal official.Who would have thought that
freedom (or the lack thereof) would have come to this?
